Yes Hardback that makes sense . Thanks for helping my poor fogged brain make sense of something I once would have had no trouble with .

sigh

Expert reaction to document from PHE about the B.1.1.7 variant, including reference to detection of the E484K mutation in some B.1.1.7 genomes.

When I saw that link you posted, coffee, I thought "Hmm, should I read that or not?"

I read it. The answer should maybe have been "No".

Although perhaps useful as a hint that restrictions are unlikely to be lifted anytime soon.

Hardbackwriter · 02/02/2021 11:29

Thanks for the heads up, januarychill - feeling a bit full of despair today so might save that one to read later rather than now!

TrashedWarrior · 02/02/2021 11:29

@peridito

With the LF tests is it the case that if they've not been carried out effectively the result is an error reading ? I know there is an "error" reading but no idea what would cause it .

I worry that for a LF test to be done correctly it's actually quite uncomfortable for the recipient .That people self testing will result in lots of tests with a false negative .

We were told it's possible it's a bad batch hence why to log an inconclusive test, (serial no) and if two to take a pcr test.

Aaand I've just realised I didn't log my negative with the government on Sunday 🙄

Only my second lft. I blame overexcited kids. They watched David Attenborough and turned into fighting monkeys for an hour.

TrashedWarrior · 02/02/2021 11:32

Sorry, void is the correct term.

Current MN threads:

"SAGE are sooo depressing"
and
"Would you go on holiday abroad in May?"

I really think the government needs to overhaul messaging....

I think you cannot overestimate how very stupid some people are.

Many have no interaction with Government messaging at all, only with SM.

JanuaryChill · 02/02/2021 12:25

Granted @Haffiana, but the average MNer is reasonably well educated, and, in this instance, quite representative of sections of the whole population, I'd have said!

JanuaryChill · 02/02/2021 12:26

And the government needs to use SM more!

herecomesthsun · 02/02/2021 12:27

I am really pleased though that most people are not agreeing at least on the SAGE thread

^^ well they are now pushing for school mixing to go back

I was pondering today as I walked around the park that holidays abroad are hard to squash.

Esp from U.K., short haul

JanuaryChill · 02/02/2021 12:29

Who's "they", mud? And is mixing a typo?

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 12:31

Firefliss yes agree, thanks, likely capacity

I don’t think people are stupid do much as really eager consumers (for holidays)

@JanuaryChill , well today is the real Groundhog Day (with another six weeks of winter predicted by said rodent this morning) and on the coronavirus boards nothing really changes.
sirfredfredgeorge · 02/02/2021 12:58

Sage are awful, government messaging is awful, they both act as if lockdown is without any harm to public health, they completely and abjectly fail to provide any guidance or information on how to mitigate those harms. Calling people stupid for making their own decisions on how to mitigate those harms is not helpful.

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 13:12

SAGE have their remit but it’s nowhere near the full picture. It’s easy to say how to suppress the virus. Far harder to mitigate against huge harm it causes. It’s always been a balancing act.

Semple was quite good this morning as he recognised difficulty in quarantine for U.K. and wouldn’t comment on policy. Individually members often recognise challenge but as a group position SAGE only really takes suppress position.

Hardbackwriter · 02/02/2021 13:20

Again, maybe it's just because I'm feeling a bit low and despairing today but I agree with @sirfredfredgeorge that sneering at people and calling people stupid for being at the end of their tether is unfair and unkind, and it's the kind of thing that this thread has, I think, generally been very good at avoiding. None of us need to be black and white thinkers; you can hold both the idea that the current restrictions are necessary and will need to continue, but also that they're putting people under massive and probably eventually unsustainable pressure.

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 02/02/2021 13:23

Hancock Statement on BBC Parliament now...

Firefliess · 02/02/2021 13:25

I'm not sure that having a new strain that might be more transmissible and might mean vaccines are somewhat less effective means we need to forget all hopes of relaxing lockdown.

Firstly, the vaccines we have are not ineffective against any strain tested as yet, just a little bit less effective, but still more effective than what we'd normally consider an effective vaccine.

Secondly, it's very likely that people who catch one of the new strains after being vaccinated will have milder illness, a level of risk we can live with.

Thirdly, scientists are already working on adapting existing vaccines to better target new strains. The likelihood is we will all need booster shots every year, just like flu. But that's ok, we can do that.

And finally - most importantly - we're going to go on getting new variants, whether or not we try to close our borders. We're going to go on getting them for years and years. We cannot enforce lockdowns and keep kids out of school for years and years (most likely decades). We will need to learn to live with it.

So I don't think people are stupid or unreasonable to be thinking about getting their lives back once they are those around them have had a vaccine.

Pathetic32 · 02/02/2021 14:12

TBH if the vaccine doesn't mean we can get back to normal then I should think significant numbers of people will be questioning what the point is of having it.

MRex · 02/02/2021 14:21

Sputnik Phase 3 says 92% efficacy: "Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine candidate appears safe and effective - The Lancet" www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)00191-4/fulltext. Very good news as it's getting rolled out in various countries, the more working vaccines the better!

I'm in @Firefliess camp. I have faith that vaccines will allow us to start returning to normal, and we can be careful now while looking forward to that time. (May is a bit of a daft idea, August less daft). The Imperial booster research with self amplifying RNA cheered me greatly with the idea of ultimately tackling all variants, though I'm also very impatient to know what will be changed so that OxAZ / Pfizer / Moderna / Novovax etc are more effective against these new variants. As much as they can be suppressed, the variants are convergent evolution so they will still simply return unless vaccines can tackle them. The level of "moderate" illness for the remaining 38% who are still susceptible is most significant for research, is it feeling crap for a few days or will a percentage still suffer long covid etc.

JanuaryChill · 02/02/2021 15:46

Extract from the paper posted by @CoffeeandCroissant upthread, gives some of the reasons for concern: (@Hardbackwriter 👀 away!)

“This is another reason to follow the COVID-19 restrictions/infection control measures more strictly – otherwise not only can the virus continue to spread, it can also evolve.
“Unfortunately, the lack of control of these different variants in the UK may lead this population to become a melting pot for different emerging SARS-COV-2/COVID-19 variants – so we really need to reduce our contact rates to reduce the opportunities for viral spread/replication to reduce the speed with which these different virus variants can evolve.
“Closing borders/restricting travel may help a little with this, but there is now probably already a sufficient critical mass of virus-infected people within the endemic UK population to allow this natural selection/evolution to proceed – as this report suggests – so we really need to stick to the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions as much as possible.
“If this E484K mutation is acquired by most of the UK B.1.1.7 variants – the recent reassurances from recent studies showing that the mRNA vaccines will still offer optimum protection against the original UK variant – may no longer apply
