Wiping down the food shopping?!?

Anyone else out there still (if you have at all) wiping their food shopping down with bleach/disinfectant etc? I am and I’ve got to say it’s driving me insane but I know it would worry me if I didn’t?!

I quarantine them shelf life stuff and wipe the rest. Always have. We bought a cheap veg rack to make it easier and it just feels like a normal 10 min job now. I am vulnerable though.

Littleguggi · 29/01/2021 07:14

@supersonicginandtonic I highly doubt it, unless the anxiety is widespread and having an impact on other areas of your life and causing a level of distress. (speaking as a mental health practitioner who offers anxiety management work)

ConcernedAuntie · 29/01/2021 08:02

Well, I had stopped wiping down shopping but then I saw the video clip in this article and have started again. I wonder how many times he had done that walking around the shop picking things up and putting them down again.

My parents do it even to the degree they wash all the vegetables in water with bleach.

Then they broke all the rules and had my brother and his kids over for Christmas.

Idiots

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2021 09:15

Urgh washing stuff down ok, but using bleach? That's just ridiculous.

Inkpaperstars · 29/01/2021 09:36

Yes, I really really wouldn’t use bleach!

redsquirrelfan · 29/01/2021 10:18

You are more likely to get ill from bleach! For goodness sake, if you must wash all your shopping down, just do it with hot soapy water.

The only shopping I wipe with bleach is the stuff that reeks of nasty perfume from the checkout person's hands. Or maybe the shelf stacker.

I just keep washing my hands when I am in and using 100% alcohol spray when I am out.

You sound kinda snobby? What on earth are u talking about.
Most supermarket colleagues( l am
one) are doing their level best to keep clean ... and alive angry

I'm not snobby, I have a problem with perfumes (and smoke). I can't cope with certain smells, some are fine, but not the heavy cloying ones, or ones that make my eyes so inflamed that I can't actually see and affect my nasal passages. In most cases I am able to leave the area or shut the windows but when it has been brought into my house and will be there for a while then I have to remove the smell. I understand the need for keeping hands clean, that has nothing to do with it, it is the perfume I need to remove. Everyone needs to look after themselves, I need to not only clean my hands like everyone else, I also need to remove allergens from my house, I hope that helps you to understand. There is no need to be angry about it, not everyone is able to live with odours.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/01/2021 13:07

Doesn't bleach affect you if you're that sensitive to odours @SlopesOff? Even a weak bleach solution smells vile.

withlotsoflove · 29/01/2021 13:31

@SlopesOff
Thanks for explaining but...
I think you’re overthinking how much contact a cashier or (someone stocking) gets with your goods!
It’s a fast paced experience both times.
I’ve yet to see a cashier fondle the shopping / or anyone out back for that matter! 😂
I don’t think l could scent your cauliflower with my perfume even if l wore it down my bra all day!

Therealone · 29/01/2021 13:51

In November the pharmacist in my gp have me a flu jab, I asked him about shopping. He said we should be wiping our shopping and he does.

WeirdLoverWilde · 29/01/2021 13:58

The chairman of Nervtag says the opposite, I'd be more inclined to listen to him!

I guess it's all just personal preference.

HereComesATractor · 29/01/2021 14:01

The doctor who gave birth to me doesn’t wipe down the shopping and nor does the CEV person she lives with. Medical people have different opinions about all sorts of things, and the risks here are much more about perceptions of cost to benefit

burntraisins · 29/01/2021 15:19

There is a small covid risk from anything handled by other people. This is not really a controversial thing to say.

Some people are happy to accept that small risk with shopping, or don't have the time to do anything about it anyway.

Some people are not happy to accept that small risk, and have the time to wipe things.

Either is fine. They're both fine. Neither needs the other thing to be somehow proved wrong, to be fine. Everyone's free to do whichever one they want.

BackBoiler · 29/01/2021 17:56

I hate the word "safe" drives me absolutely insane. No i do not wipe down my shopping, never have done and never will. I'm still baffled about the instruction of washing your hands. I thought you got told that as a toddler Confused

I can honestly say that I have never encountered any supermarket staff who have such perfumed hands it has made my groceries smell of it. Confused

But I now only do Scan and Shop which avoids all that anyway, and I don't perfume my own hands as a rule. Grin

Never have

“She was told by his consultant it was a waste of time as there are lots of other thing coming into the house.
I think you're being rather hysterical and how on earth do you know what my health is like? I never mentioned my health.”

No, you didn’t, quite right. I made an assumption because you did mention the health of your family. Thought you would have mentioned your own I’ll health too, if you had such, within that context.

We don’t have lots of other things coming into the house 🤷‍♀️ Anything that does come in gets sprayed with antiviral, washed or wiped.

Sorry, but I think you’re sounding a little hysterical and over-invested in an harmless action of others that can’t possibly effect you in any way, shape or form.

I’m pretty relaxed, because I take what I consider sensible precautions for our circumstances. My husband and son are so laid back as to be almost horizontal.

Doesn’t bother me in the least what you or your mum do or don’t consider prudent. Entirely your call.

Live long and prosper.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 29/01/2021 21:17

I used to wash shopping for the first 4-5 months. We stopped when it seemed that it wasn't passing through touch so much as through air.

However .I have covid now and all I've done in the last few weeks is walks outdoors and receive supermarket shops.

2 different track and trace people have said to me that 2-3 people a day tell them similar. and that they wash their shopping still!!! I can only guess I've got it mildly (so far..) due to low viral load?!

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 29/01/2021 21:18

I think if I was very high risk and didn't have covid I would now start wiping again. And keep 2meters and worry about passing.

This is all I've done since xmas. I have no idea how I got it.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 29/01/2021 21:18

Batshit.

Even in COVID time life is too short and the risk too low.
