Wiping down the food shopping?!?

Anyone else out there still (if you have at all) wiping their food shopping down with bleach/disinfectant etc? I am and I’ve got to say it’s driving me insane but I know it would worry me if I didn’t?!

Yes. Have been Doing since March

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2021 18:34

No, I did the first time around but not this time. No quarantining of things either. Regular hand washing though.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/01/2021 18:35

@Smartiepants79

Nope, personally feel it shows a worrying level of anxiety and a skewed risk perception. But... if it makes you happier... it doesn’t impact me so ....
Why do you think the message is to wash your hands when you've been out?
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/01/2021 18:37

@XenoBitch

I did at the beginning but then stopped. That way madness lies.
Don't be so rude.
Inkpaperstars · 27/01/2021 18:37

If you only wipe one type of thing, make it the things that go in the fridge or freezer since the virus won’t degenerate there as it will at room temperature. Personally DP cleans things that go in the fridge or freezer, where possible, it isn’t always due to packaging etc, and we are also aware to wash hands after handling them. Well, I am...he trusts to his cleaning but I prefer a belt and braces approach. It is a bit crazy making, but I am being extra careful due to high risk pregnancy and current high case numbers in my area.

OliveTree75 · 27/01/2021 18:38

Nah don't need my day to be anymore dull than it already is!

EffIt · 27/01/2021 18:38

I do it, I use clinell wipes. I used to do it before covid with drink cans.

HappyFlamingo · 27/01/2021 18:39

I never have and haven't caught covid.

XenoBitch · 27/01/2021 18:41

That is why I stopped. I don't care what other people do.

EffIt · 27/01/2021 18:43

Oh yeah & this advert convinced me even further to keep doing it! When I told my sister about it she bought loads of this lol

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/01/2021 18:43

@SpringGlade004

Yes. Anything that can goes into the spare room for quarantine.

Anything fridge/freezer goes into a bowl of cold soapy water & gets washed & rinsed.

Veg goes straight into our large veg drawer in the fridge and washed as it's used.

You can get it from touching things others have touched, it's a small risk, but not one I'm willing to take.

Mail/parcels I open, tip the contents out, dispose if the envelope/box etc wash my hands & deal with the contents.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 27/01/2021 18:45

@cookiemonster5

We just restarted wiping shopping.

I had symptoms and had to go for a test on Sunday. Luckily it was negative but I've picked up a nasty cold and the only place could have been from shopping. I'm the only one who leaves the house as everyone else is off school or shielding.

Really gave us a scare. Still feeling horrible and it's my first illness in over a year so it goes to show just how big a difference increased cleanliness and masks makes to daily life.

But if you've been the only one who leaves the house, you didn't necessarily pick up your cold from the actual items of shopping that you brought back. You could have caught it from going shopping with all the attendant risks of doing that, but not necessarily from the food and products you bought. I'm also the only one who leaves the house but I've never wiped down the shopping. I go shopping and then wash my hands.

You didn't say why you stopped, you said it was MADNESS

[/quote] Was that woman really wiping her shopping and cardboard boxes down with antibacterial hand gel? Confused
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/01/2021 18:48

Washing your hands after putting shopping away is great, but it doesn't stop you getting it on your hands the next time you pick that item up out of the fridge/cupboard.

XazieRose · 27/01/2021 18:48

Yes. We started at the beginning of the first lockdown and it’s part of a routine now.

Everything that goes in the fridge or cupboards is wiped or decanted now. Fruit and veggies are soaked and washed in fruit and veg wash right away and stored in fridge bins. Makes cooking a lot easier, everything is already cleaned.

Will keep it up, just feels more hygienic now. I do have a GI condition that makes me susceptible to food poisoning though.

XenoBitch · 27/01/2021 18:49

I did not say it was madness, Maybe look up what the phrase means and get off my back.

turnthebiglightoff · 27/01/2021 18:55

I don't know anyone who has time for this in their life.

Welliesandpyjamas · 27/01/2021 18:56

We did this during the first lockdown when it was all new and unknown.

By now we feel we have to sensibly assess the risks to us in what we do and where we live.

Neither of us can work from home or be furloughed. Our 3 DC go to school. We all wash our hands. We wear masks in shops or in enclosed spaces with new people. We keep 2 metres apart from people.

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 19:02

No, never did, but then I caught covid in March about lockdown time before wiping down shopping had been mentioned. Very mild case so haven't seen the need to take excessive precautions. Think we might have had another brush with it 3 weeks back as felt under the weather but no specific symptoms to get a test for - the only place I have been is Lidl

lilfoxfur · 27/01/2021 19:03

No. Jesus Christ. Maybe we should I don't know but no I never have and not yet had covid touch wood

Lovely1a2b3c · 27/01/2021 19:06

I did this during the first wave. I still think it's a sensible precaution to take.

I have diagnosed OCD and it caused me a great deal of stress and took at least 2 hours (+ plus shower time) to do each time. I haven't done it this lockdown.

herecomesthsun · 27/01/2021 19:06

I haven't been.

The advice from scientists has been that it isn't needed.

I think it would make me anxious and wouldn't help us overall (even though we are shielding).

If it makes you feel safer and suits your family, that's fine.

Lovely1a2b3c · 27/01/2021 19:10

Also showering after shopping might be more important than shopping wiping as people may have breathed/coughed close to or brushed past you and you will have handled a lot of products, which may initially have more viral particles on them.

shrill · 27/01/2021 19:18

Yes from the beginning take every precaution including changing out of clothes after being in shops, washing hands and face in case i forgot and touched my face
