Wiping down the food shopping?!?

Anyone else out there still (if you have at all) wiping their food shopping down with bleach/disinfectant etc? I am and I’ve got to say it’s driving me insane but I know it would worry me if I didn’t?!

Yes we do and have done the whole time.
It makes sense to me, given that the virus can survive on surfaces..
I don't trust that other shoppers have sanitised their hands properly, or not touched their masks before picking things up and checking dates, changing their mind, squeezing for ripeness etc.

Borogroves · 27/01/2021 19:27

All my shopping is delivered to the garage. I have a fridge freezer in there. Anything that doesn't need to be chilled/frozen is packed into lidded boxes in there. I quarantine everything for 72 hours. If I have to use something before the 72 hours is up and it's not in an outer wrapping that can be removed then I clean it with an anti-viral spray.

A lot of people may scoff at this but it's the same COVID protocol I have to adhere to at work so it would seem strange to stop taking precautions at home!

Coffeeandaride · 27/01/2021 19:30

No, never considered it, I don’t want to catch COVID but seems overly precautious.

Beaniecats · 27/01/2021 19:31

Totally unnecessary

Scarby9 · 27/01/2021 19:31

Yes I am, although with soapy eater rather than bleach.
Why would I stop now with a new, more transmissable variant?

RaspberryCoulis · 27/01/2021 19:32

Never have, never will, utterly pointless. That way madness lies.

LovingBob · 27/01/2021 19:33

No, never have, we have groceries delivered each week and other deliveries and post almost daily and don't do any wiping or washing

MissDollyMix · 27/01/2021 19:33

No. Never done it and I don’t intend to start now.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/01/2021 19:33

Yes I've been wiping down grocery shopping ever since last March, but NOT with bleach or disinfectant! I use normal soapy detergent water for everything that can be washed that way, or the packets are suitable for that purpose. Otherwise the goods are quarantined for a few days.

2020BogOff · 27/01/2021 19:37

Living in the same house, sharing a bed, bathroom etc with a symptomatic covid positive DH and I still didn't get infected I really can't see how wiping down groceries would make any difference.

Wannabegreenfingers · 27/01/2021 19:39

No, didn't start, won't do it.

ekidmxcl · 27/01/2021 19:42

No. I never have. Because virus is absolutely microscopic and any wiping won’t get it all. Plus covid seems to get people who don’t go out, have shopping delivered and sanitise their shopping when it’s delivered. I’m leaving it to fate. There is only so much I can do.

AliasGrape · 27/01/2021 19:44

I did it briefly at the start, realised it was not a good thing for me to be doing anxiety wise and so stopped. I’ve felt the urge again since Christmas but have resisted. An extra vigilant about hand washing instead.

LawnFever · 27/01/2021 19:45

@atomt

Never have done and haven't caught covid yet.

I unpack my shopping and wash my hands afterwards.

Same, never bothered with this or with quarantining parcels either
burntraisins · 27/01/2021 20:25

Yes

Karmatime · 27/01/2021 20:45

I did it a couple of times in the first lockdown but it took ages and I don’t even think I was doing it thoroughly enough to get rid of any virus if it was actually there.
So I stopped, it was quite a relief. Life is unreal enough as it is and that was just a step too far for me.

FenEel · 27/01/2021 20:49

Nope, I personally think the risk is so incredibly small that it isn’t worth it. I am quite surprised at some people I know that do it.

Veuvestar · 27/01/2021 20:49

I never really stopped doing it.
And the post and parcels

If I don’t I’d feel the same as if I didn’t brush my teeth before going to bed or didn’t put plastic in the recycling

Unanananana · 27/01/2021 21:17

No. Never. Just wash hands after putting it away. I wash fresh veg/fruit before use and wash my hands while cooking anyway.

Bleach should NEVER come close to food. Ingesting bleach can be deadly. Anyone that bleaches food is just stupid.

KarensNotMyName · 27/01/2021 22:00

I do, because Chris Whitby said it would be reasonable to do so.

It makes no sense when people say they just wash their hands after. By then you've already transferred the virus (if there was any) onto the fridge door, kitchen cupboard handles, surfaces etc. Meaning every time you get anything from the kitchen you now need to wash your hands. But by which time you've now transferred the virus to the mug and teaspoon you used, kettle handle and so on... Much easier to just wipe the groceries once and now you know your home is safe and you don't need to
keep washing your hands in your own home!

KarensNotMyName · 27/01/2021 22:00

*Whitty. Not sure who Chris Whitby is!!

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 22:03

That was my thinking, Karen.

But cases are not sky high here or I might start doing it again.

Tbh when my child was at school the shopping seemed the least likely route to getting it!

Wow, seems it’s pretty marmite! I wasn’t expecting so many replies tbh. Thanks to those with the ‘for’ comments - it’s put my mind at ease as to why I’m doing it and that I’m most definitely not the only one! If it cuts the risk for me and my family by even a small percent it’s worth it. Appreciate where the people who choose not to are coming from too though. As some of you said it’s whatever is right for you..therefore I will continue doing it!..Stay safe everyone x

Nope. I suffer from OCD and it's a slippery slope for me.
