What fresh hell is this.

Why, why, why was the Oxford trial/data reporting so sloppy?

How has it come to this??

Yes, it's usually UK bashing on MN

Refreshing to see a different slant on this thread for a change[/quote]
Bashing the UK govt is useful though. It encourages them to stop being incompetent morons.

Bashing the EU just plays into the hands of said morons.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/01/2021 10:09

What morons? Can you see anything being said on this thread that is inaccurate?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/01/2021 10:09

@Oblomov20

So, AZ should be providing 80 million to EU, but are now claiming they only supply 30 million?
Yes... temporarily because they are rebuilding to be able to meet all orders more quickly.

There expect, it has been explained in many places, a short haitus and then they will meet all deadlines. But without the rebuild they couldn't...

trulydelicious · 26/01/2021 10:10

@RedToothBrush

Depending on how the US handle vaccine shortages... (the US cant make additional orders from pfizer until June because backorders all full

Yes, Pfizer shortages in US also

@Doomsdayiscoming I gave no champagne. I’m currently home schooling so my life is fucking horrendous. I just hypothesised a scenario.

MRex · 26/01/2021 10:11

@RedToothBrush Its one unholy mess...
Yep. Good point about the Pfizer supply, hopefully all the UK vaccine contracts mandate the supply with clear actions if issues arise. I'm pretty surprised the EU missed that, pharmaceutical delays are not uncommon.

Hopefully politicians will step in to calm the crazy soon, otherwise I would expect AZ to walk out on the EU contract.

IcedPurple · 26/01/2021 10:11

@Doomsdayiscoming

God. I thought the endless EU bashing would end after January 1st.

Tedious.

Can you point out the inaccuracies on this thread?

Do you believe the EU has done a stellar job in vaccine procurement? one which is totally above criticism?

If so, you disagree with a large number of people living in the EU.

IcedPurple · 26/01/2021 10:13

It looks like the EMA is not going to approve the AZ vaccine for use in the over 65s in the EU as it has not been sufficiently tested for that age group.

Does it look like that though?

Other than the debunked claim from an anonymous source, what evidence is there that this will happen?

Ohthatsgreat · 26/01/2021 10:14

Of course the EU is furious at this breach of contract

Yet the advance purchase agreement between EU and AZ seems to suggest that AZ have the right to vary the delivery if the EMA doesn’t approve. So what’s the breach of contract if that is the case?
You think AZ are going to sit on warehouses of vaccine whilst the EMA decides whether to approve? Is that even ethical if other countries want those vaccines?

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2021 10:14

@FourTeaFallOut

EU bashing?? I mean, maybe you're not pro EU enough RedToothBrush? Maybe try a bit harder? Grin
I did wonder when someone might come out with that one! Yes im 100% anti-EU. Grin

I certainly don't think the UK is whiter than white thats for sure.

But the EU rage on this is also somewhat misplaced too. There is significant internal blame to be shared around in large spades on this.

And if the UK have jumped the gun and approved a useless vaccine for the over 65s then the EU in knowing this, taking action that actively harms the UK programme to reduce their own internal vaccine issues isnt exactly whiter than white. Nor is expecting to have a vaccine that isn't approved to sit in warehouses for months when others are desperate for it.

It all depends on what the contracts actually say. I think we will hear about this in fine detail if we end up in a trade war over it.

I think the whole thing is awful. But its how the world works.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2021 10:15

Bloody fake news.
Thanks MNHQ for editing the title. I think that was a wise course of action.

There must come a point when all these negative and inaccurate headlines about vaccines, headlines that usually find some context at the arse end of articles and often refuted only days later, really start to bite into vaccine confidence.

Surely AZ could potentially sue anyone who published the 8% figure is thats where its come from!!

Good grief!

Bonsai49 · 26/01/2021 10:21

The UK are probably not the country most likely to be impacted by the EU withholding vaccines . The AZ vaccine was made cheapily to be available to all countries in the world . The EU will be hurting the poorer country in the world - not something to be proud of.

Fgs!
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2021 10:21

It isn't EU bashing to say that their approach hasn't worked in favour of getting the vaccine out as quickly as possible. At the moment everyone is reacting to what is happening right now. We don't actually know, which approach, which vaccines etc will be best for sometime to come.

What is evident, is that where cases are out of control, as they have been in the UK, emergency measures have to take place. Whether they are best long term, remains to be seen. Every government will be under enormous pressure to do the best for their people and of course that will play out politically and legally.

But it is no excuse for vaccine scaremongering by journalists, on purpose, or by accident.

MarshaBradyo · 26/01/2021 10:22

I meant to copy tweet

Fgs that this error was even reported

So b

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2021 10:23

To be clear, the original 8% efficacy value is fake news, not the tweet I posted a picture of.

Yes I copied badly

My exclamation was more over the incredibly irresponsible scaremongering. So bad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2021 10:25

Grin Marsha, I was so enraged by the whole thing that I wasn't clear, then thought you thought I agreed with the 8%.

I might have a coffee.... and go and breathe some fresh air for a moment.

thatgingergirl · 26/01/2021 10:25

I agree FourTeaFallOut. Seems from the Reuters link and the Twitter link, the German Health Ministry have denied the report. It's good they've done that early.

Definitely

I am all for free speech but this is getting so irresponsible. The confidence in some very vulnerable communities is lower than average here. Never mind the vaccine confidence abroad.

The press and social media are going to keep us all virus prisoners for a lot longer than necessary at this rate. The lower the vaccine take up around the world the longer this lasts.

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 26/01/2021 10:28

It’s what happens when you have journalists (and SM commentators) who think they are also scientists.

Massive back pedalling is the order of the day today I would imagine.
