Everyone can spread the virus. Except maybe those immune, there doesn't seem to be evidence yet that vaccination will stop or slow the spread. Doesn't mean it won't though, it's being studied at the moment.

So yes. Rule breakers can spread it. Abiding by the rules reduces the chance for it to spread. The more we could stop it spreading, the more chance of schools being open.

Looks like we've been a bit overwhelmed by the new variant which spreads more easily. Role on the vaccine.

Frodont · 26/01/2021 07:41

I would say immunity would significantly slow down the spread. The original virus was definitely decreasing hugely even pre vaccination.

SeahorseoramI · 26/01/2021 07:45

@Wishitsnows

The article seems to have women as an after thought.
That was the impression I got watching it being discussed on yesterday’s lunch news.

Immunity does slow down the spread across a population. Hence herd immunity. On an individual basis afaik they are collecting data on potential for transmission post vaccine. It is normal to reduce or stop risk of transmission with vaccination, but they need evidence for this virus and vaccine to be sure.

Women as an after thought to men? Who knew that could be a thing? To be fair, the data does show age and sex as giving an increased risk of death. Does not mean women should be ignored, but it is important to understand who is most at risk and why if we are to reduce that risk.

Trumplosttheelection · 26/01/2021 08:19

Women are not an afterthought, it's just that COVID is far more lethal for men. Tbh that probably hasn't been covered enough. In my hospital we've admitted nearly two men for every one woman and the deaths have followed that. At points Covid icu has been all Male. Men really need to avoid this disease. It's a killer for them. Being Male is in itself a risk factor.

Pomegranatespompom · 26/01/2021 08:38

Absolutely agree with that @Trumplosttheelection (great name btw). Observations from itu are mainly over 60, overweight & generally working class men.

Iamthemilitanttendency · 26/01/2021 08:39

Indeed, male secondary teachers are more likely to die of Covid than the general working population (ad certainly than female teachers) and this is regarded as statistically significant.

MiddlesexGirl · 26/01/2021 12:14

At least that will put paid to the idea that teachers should be ahead of far more vulnerable workers in the queue.
There should be an outcry if low paid workers end up behind them.
Maybe all men should be vaccinated before women. There's more science supporting that.

user1471588124 · 26/01/2021 15:40

@Nellodee

In the town where I live, there is an 8 year difference in the life expectancy of women between the highest and lowest areas. That's within a 5 mile radius. Being poor is incredibly bad for your health, Covid or no covid.
Exactly. Thats why measures that push millions of people into poverty doesnt make sense from a public health standpoint.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 26/01/2021 15:41

So, I presume this has nothing to do with making announcements about whether anybody gets added to the priority list for vaccination, then?

godmum56 · 26/01/2021 17:55

@Backbee

People working in close proximity to each other, and in jobs with regular exposure to the virus, continue to have higher death rates when compared with the rest of the working age population.

Is it wildly inappropriate to say no shite Sherlock at this line in the article? Did anyone think this would not be the case

no not wildly appropriate and this is not even news.
Owl55 · 26/01/2021 19:02

Just today I’ve heard of 4 teaching staff testing positive and 2 different class bubbles closing for isolation in one school but the parents are not told about it , so teachers and children are contracting it daily

Hesma · 26/01/2021 19:17

Schools were open all year for those who were eligible... I worked as normal 🤷‍♀️

Actually I think that is how the age groups should work one we start the 40s downwards. Men before women in each group. Then move on to the next age range. They are more at risk after all.

Need to do keyworkers first though.

peak2021 · 26/01/2021 21:34

Though small as a group as a whole, are entertainers/comedians one group with a high death rate? Or is it just that those we hear about? Bobby Ball, Tim Brooke-Taylor, for example, RIP.

lljkk · 26/01/2021 21:39

Public figures are highly networked, they have lots of contacts who have lots of contacts. It'd be weird if they weren't more likely to get infected.

Doris who lives alone, hasn't left the county in 30 years, and whose highlight of the week is a garden centre cafe stop with her mate Alice is not so connected.

Chelle24 · 27/01/2021 00:28

I'm a carer, the numbers and higher risk don't surprise me. But it's okay, I got a little badge to wear as a thank you and an extra 50p an hour on Christmas Day.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 00:45

I think this report shows why vaccination by age / nhs / careworkers is def the way to go as the evidence really supports this with professions its harder to gage
Did the report show age brackets as think that would show is more?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 00:45

@owl55 thousands are contracting it daily , hence the numbers

QueenBee70 · 27/01/2021 10:25

Of course they didn’t . They report things in a way that suits their narrative . The ONS figures often don’t correlate with the governments figures , together with the dodgy percentages that they like to quote that don’t add up .

Interestingly they have also increased deaths attributed to covid deaths within 60 days of a positive test now , this happened to an old friend and colleague who had cancer but was recorded as a covid death. In the last fortnight another friend attended hospital due to complications of her covid ( she has an autoimmune disorder) and was tested again , despite telling them she was already positive , this resulted in her receiving a new notification from test and trace , so she is now recorded as two cases of covid!

I don’t believe anything they say any more . I’d much rather they reported the figures of those released and recovered to give some hope instead of spreading fear .

QueenBee70 · 27/01/2021 10:34

Herd immunity has worked for Sweden so hopefully the vaccine will work in the same way. Unfortunately locking us up will have reduced our immunity so there is likely to be increased hospital admissions for all the normal respiratory illnesses that are about at this time of the year . They will also be overwhelmed due to all the other treatments and operations that haven’t taken place . Hopefully they will take the WHO advice to test the PCR tests for the correct amount of cycles and then we will see the infection rates reduce massively anyway .

QueenBee70 · 27/01/2021 10:36

I couldn’t agree more ! Well said .

Nope. Wouldn’t have thought that required a research grant 😁

Eh?

@Chelle24 sorry but that made me laugh. My partner got given a thank you tea bag by his work.
