Riots against lockdown in Europe

Downriver · 25/01/2021 09:27

The scenes of young people burning down a COVID testing facility in the Netherlands and burning the Danish PM at a stake in protest against lockdown have really shaken me. Would it happen here? Who is organising this? Fascists? Sometimes I read comments against lockdown on here and I think such a mood is being primed.

@GrannyRose15

Most people by the time they are 70 accept mortality

One thing is to die. Something very different is to be killed by the self-centredness of others

Lord Sumption the other day stated, that it’s time to prioritise the young

Sure, one opinion amongst millons, so what?

It's a pity nobody asked us if we wanted the country to shut down to save us. Many would have said no

It would have been your response, and that's fine. But you cannot speak for others who do want to be given a chance to live.

TheKeatingFive · 26/01/2021 15:12

Okay. Let’s go right back to basics. They are being killed by a virus.

We need to stop blaming people for what viruses are primed to do. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Furries · 26/01/2021 15:29

But there wasn’t a choice for the older generation to make. It’s not necessarily been about saving their lives at the expense of the young. It’s been about not overwhelming the NHS.

So, if a choice had been given, then surely the older generation would have also had to agree to not seeking any medical help for Covid and therefore not taking up hospital beds?

MercyBooth · 26/01/2021 15:33

The ASA have insisted that an ad citing that joggers have Covid 19 be pulled. And they are also considering ads involving supermarket trolleys and takeaway coffee

safariboot · 26/01/2021 15:39

I think the people being violent and disruptive are people who are predisposed to do that anyway, given the opportunity to feel they'll get away with it. I don't think there'll be a strong connection to any particular political view.

I do think the Netherlands riots should serve as a warning to other countries. Government's cannot impose restrictions the people will not support. To get support, we need to be persuaded the measures are necessary, useful, and proportionate. Now somebody tell me how a curfew is in any way supposed to reduce the spread of Covid-19?

trulydelicious · 26/01/2021 16:17

Youngster will go to bed instead of attending an illegal rave? Every little helps

Beats me; perhaps they imagine the virus can tell the time? Wink

Or maybe it's just another attempt to be "seen to be doing something" ...

Have you ever been a ‘youngster’?

Wording on the Ads is ill-thought-out, but honestly, the way some joggers puff heavily in your face while running past is disgusting

Have you ever been a ‘youngster

Not during a pandemic, no

I would never have known 😆

No it's not ridiculous. If someone is behaving in a reckless way, going against regulations in a way that is known to spread the virus to others it is that person who is doing the killing.
If a drunk driver crashed into a pedestrian killing them, it is the driver who is responsible for the death, not the car - which is simply doing what all cars are designed to do - be driven around.

The more and more you post, the more and more it seems the pandemic is just the perfect scenario for you to project your deep bitterness at life and people

I’d recommend you turn off the news and take up some personal development, stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and ‘clean up your own house’, as they say.

If they’re already willing to break the rules to attend an illegal event, why do you think they won’t be willing to break the curfew? Unless you expect there to be a police officer on every street corner.

You better go tell all those doctors and nurses that they are to blame for all the hospital acquired infections then. Which seem to account for a very large number of people dying.
trulydelicious · 26/01/2021 17:13

@hamstersarse

deep bitterness at life and people

I'm not bitter.

But I find what some people do atrocious and ridiculous - and it's good to be able to tell them - who knows...they may take notice

trulydelicious · 26/01/2021 17:19

@AuntyClementine

Some may be willing, but they will be arrested. Not all of them, but many (enough to make the message clear)

I don't see a problem with curfews personally (in the current context - not as a permanent measure obviously)

I don't approve of anarchy and violence (I'm weird like that)

earnshaw47 · 26/01/2021 17:30

i dont think anyone has actually enjoyed this lockdown, tiers etc, but, come on, would you really behave like these mindless idiots in the netherlands etc ? it scares me that there are people who would even consider behaving that way

It's just a very small bunch of idiots protesting. From the reports it was mostly teenagers and I am guessing it was probably an already criminal bunch.

Odinia · 26/01/2021 17:40

The population of the world are not going to impoverish themselves without a bit of fight back are they.. it’s bad here. Those who voice opposition are being silenced on social and mainstream media... this has nothing to do with an illness, it’s Communism clear plain and simple. As Kennedy said “Those who make peaceful Revolution impossible make violent Revolution inevitable “

PumpkinPiloter · 26/01/2021 17:42

What frustrated me is that people are using a bunch of hooligans to justify easing lockdown due to fears of compliance. This kind of thinking is what stopped us going into lockdown early enough to avoid the shit show we find ourselves currently emersed in. Most people are sensible a minority are not.

PumpkinPiloter · 26/01/2021 17:44

@Odinia Communism? Give me a break! I don't know of a single country that has not imposed similar methods. Are they all communist?

caspersmagicaljourney · 26/01/2021 18:02

Wait until the summer.
If pubs and restaurants are still not able to open then, and people can't go away on holiday (UK), it will explode.👿

duffeldaisy · 26/01/2021 18:05

Could it happen here?
Possibly. Idiocy has no nationality.

I get that people are really finding this hard. I am too, and I've had days of hopelessness and grief. But we need to have lockdowns, or the deaths we're having right now will be nothing in comparison.

The problem has always been that the lockdowns have been too half-hearted and so have dragged on and on and on. I would SO much prefer one month of full lockdown for everyone apart from the most essential workers - with a basic income given to everyone - to stop this thing spreading and let it die out. These long, drawn out lockdowns are exhausting and miserable. But the end is in sight. And idiots like that, rebelling against rules, are going to cause more people to die and cause all this to go on even longer.
