Riots against lockdown in Europe

Downriver · 25/01/2021 09:27

The scenes of young people burning down a COVID testing facility in the Netherlands and burning the Danish PM at a stake in protest against lockdown have really shaken me. Would it happen here? Who is organising this? Fascists? Sometimes I read comments against lockdown on here and I think such a mood is being primed.

I don't understand why we not doing this here ? Is everyone not fed up with our freedom being taken away from us ?

Not for me, i'd prefer to lose freedoms for a while than see even more people die. Quite likely we'll see 150k dead by the beginning of summer.

I want to see less blame attached to the young, more support for them and more action to eradicate CV inc travel quarantines, should have been done in the summer when infections were quite low, instead we did the opposite and now we see the results of that and other fuck ups.

We are just delaying the inevitable.

@Unsure33 and @Temptashun

Yes that’s the drug
No I asked her why all other governments were not using it . Not just the uk

I hope the drug is successful too

frumpety · 25/01/2021 19:42

@Bluemoon94 I don't understand why we not doing this here ?

Maybe because we aren't under curfew ?

AuntyClementine · 25/01/2021 19:52

It’s not happening here because most people prefer to have a grumble. Armchair anarchists. They’re all for sticking one to the system as long as it doesn’t involve leaving the house or risking arrest.

We can’t even riot right!

Hopeless.

OK, what's your plan then? I'm assuming you don't have one? If you do let's hear it. What's the first target?
Thewiseoneincognito · 25/01/2021 19:59

I remember seeing people on here being called scaremongers at the mere suggestion of rioting because of lockdowns around February March time. Anyone else? Now look at it, the worlds gone mad and it’s just the beginning!!! 🤯

I think because it's easy just to ignore the rules here when our police are so far and few between. Who will know if Kevin goes round to Gary's for a few pints? We just don't have the police presence here, we haven't for a long time. You only really see the police on the road to catch speeding motorists. I do think there will be civil unrest from business's who have had to close though, if they can't open in the spring. When the furlough stops, we'll see riots then.

Furlough will be extended well into the summer and then carried over into autumn winter of next year for this very reason. Watch this space.

MercyBooth · 25/01/2021 20:04

It’s way to cold to riot plus all our rioters are on benefits and are actually financially secure right now

Pity their electric isnt secure then. Which will help to keep them at home ................oh wait...

www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jan/07/call-us-back-next-week-eon-customers-furious-over-service-meltdown

Oh and while denigrating ppl on benefits and assuming they are criminals i bet you still expect them to wear masks to protect their "betters" Mind you if you want ppl to take to the streets cutting off electric might do it. OR the risk of the spread of Covid should they have to move in with relatives.

And like @TheKeatingFive said If society makes it clear it doesn’t care about you, why would you make sacrifices to act in its interests

Have been personally affected by this Cant top up. We have a bit left to go on our meter yet but what happens after? Check out eons fb page. Parents who are home schooling cant do it Electric cut off. Carers caring for disabled ppl Electric cut off.

You have no fucking idea.

lunapeace · 25/01/2021 20:10

@Thewiseoneincognito you say that but a pub isn't just a job for so many. Landlords up and down the land don't want to keep their business closed throughout this year. They are passionate about the business they have built up. Same goes for shops, hair salons and gyms and countless others. The government help just doesn't match their business potential. We are not just talking about furloughed employees, we are talking about the business owners who stand to lose everything.

frumpety · 25/01/2021 20:16

Is anyone else imagining their young person of the house wishing to attend a riot scenario ? In my house it would go down something like this ;
DC Mum can I have a lift tomorrow evening ?
Me why ? where are you going ?
DC Sick of my freedoms being taken away, going on a protest ?
Me I am working a late tomorrow so can't give you a lift. You could ask your Dad ?
DC barely audible muttering, with huffing and a bit of stamping thrown in for good measure, followed by 'can I have a tenner to get some food while I'm out'
Me No ! I am not funding your riot snacks, what happened to the money you had ?
DC stationary and art supplies and stuff ( which is a total lie )
DH whats the matter now ? A protest, are you kidding ? no I am not giving you a lift , if you get arrested you will never get a visa to any of the countries you want to visit, are you mad ? Come back here when I am talking to you.
< bedroom door slams>

Following evening get back from work and everyone has eaten the entire contents of the fridge again and are watching netflix.

MercyBooth · 25/01/2021 20:18

@feelingquitehopeful From Private Eye.

Coffey is to tackle the looming unemployment crisis by reviving a privatised welfare to work scheme from 2011 that was marred by poor results corruption , exploitation of the unemployed and the collapse of leading providers. Under Coffeys £2.9 billion Restart scheme contractors will help unemployed people on UC into work using job coaches training and work placements on a paid by results basis.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 25/01/2021 20:22

Yay and waves to cognito and enjoying her positivity 😁

I’m glad there are people protesting. These aren’t flat earther anti-vaccine lunatics. These are people at the end of their tether with their incompetent governments and I agree with their sentiments (even if I don’t agree with fire raising).

Victoriacres · 25/01/2021 20:26

MercyBooth don’t normally agree with you re dementors and lockdown but absolutely agree that many have been left hung out to dry by the government. My dp is a self employed gardener, caught covid and couldn’t work for 5 or 6 weeks. He was told by track and trace people and our council that there was nothing available in terms of financial support. Funnily enough after surviving on my wage he found out from a friend we were due £500 which obviously came in handy. Same friend’s husband and another acquaintance have claimed £10,000 each and still continue to work at full throttle (builders). It’s an absolute joke and the amount of fraud going on will be horrendous.

Bluemoon94 · 25/01/2021 20:28

Honestly I think we should

No soft play
No pubs
No schools
No shops
No family

Wear a mask
Be controlled by what we say
No money
Higher tax
More country debt

Like come on people wake up ? A whole generation of pub workers and theatre people lost because of the government

MercyBooth · 25/01/2021 20:30

@Victoriacres im a leftie and i dont think lockdown works but because this country does not have the infrastructure to back it up. Newsnight have been good on covering the fact that people cant afford to self isolate.

Confuzzlediddled · 25/01/2021 20:33

I just love another day of hearing how worthless my life is as CEV.
Despite the fact that I have children, work full time, volunteer, generally feel like I contribute to society yet because I have an inherited illness then I'm apparently weeks from death and should just roll over and die...

jasjas1973 · 25/01/2021 20:35

thats because they had a business rated property, usually storage or a workshop... we know loads of trades and many got this for having a container or a small workshop, whilst never been busier, due to our lockdowns which aren't really.

However the real scandal was 2nd home owners who registered their cornish property as a business, never actually rented it (done to avoid council tax) and then found they could claim and got 10k..... of course those renting as business also got it.

Money for nothing really but if you r a MW earner and have CV, don't get the app, don't get a test, keep going to work because if you do the right thing, you'll get SFA.

costco · 25/01/2021 20:35

@LunaHeather
I have two anti-lockdown friends, and possibly a third but I don't want to risk putting my cards on the table just yet with her.
Oh and a Scottish friend who is now anti lockdown as he has become an alcoholic and possibly drug addict during lockdown. But I think he's just anti-anything now.

tatutata · 25/01/2021 20:42

@LunaHeather I avoid expressing any opinions IRL, so I only know of one friend who is now also done with this. She started the conversation. Maybe others feel the same way, but it's not like any of us are overflowing with social interaction even on the phone...

No one has said that

How do you normally cope with whatever makes you CEV?

Um, the whole country has lost their freedom for months on end to protect the CEV? Many have lost their livelihoods, savings, relationships due to the measures to protect the CEV. Children have lost critical development opportunities that could have a lifelong impact on them.

How can you possibly say 'I just love another day of hearing how worthless my life is as CEV'?

TableFlowerss · 25/01/2021 21:03

NRFT but I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner to be honest. MH is a huge concern and perhaps people have just finally been pushed to their limits and are exercising their rights....
