This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4129412-1-5-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

6,353,321 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 1 in every 8.3 adults. It’s a truly remarkable achievement to have reached so many people in such a short space of time.

Welcome to the new thread and let’s keep the positive vibes going! Grin

You don't have to go as far as Twitter. Just seek out the 'sadlys' and the 'I'm afraids' clans on the board.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 02/02/2021 18:37

Is the 65 to 70 group large? Any idea how long it will take to go through next group?

Frazzled6 · 02/02/2021 18:41

Not sure how accurate figures are

AllAroundTheWrekin · 02/02/2021 18:45

Thanks. If it all goes at same speed it should be very quick.

PilatesPeach · 02/02/2021 18:47

@HalfDutchGirl yes I have seen some younger ones eg dentists. My hub says people can sit in car for 15 mins afterwards rather than inside. I really enjoy it myself.

PilatesPeach · 02/02/2021 18:49

that is re the AZ. With the Pfizer they stay inside the vaccination centre for 15 mins but the AZ recepients can self observe in car but are not required to.

@HalfDutchGirl sorry to pick you out, but you are on this latest page and are just going to have to take one for the team. Grin

A hugh THANK YOU!!!!!!! for the fantastic job you and everyone involved in the programme are doing and who are all making it such a success.

We’ll be 10 million or thereabouts by this time tomorrow.

HalfDutchGirl · 02/02/2021 19:51

@boys3 Wow, thank you! Flowers

There's a ton of us helping out and a lot on this thread and other threads on MN. There are approx 25 volunteers at my little vaccine hub from all walks of life it's just phenomenal that so many people are willing to help out and I'm just one tiny cog in a massive machine that is going to kick this virus into touch!

buttery81 · 02/02/2021 20:05

Sorry if this has already been posted, but...

Good numbers all round today.

Best ever Monday for vaccinations.

Deaths is high but it is always high on a Monday as catch up from the weekend and much lower than last week.

Second day in a row with cases below 20k and the lowest case number since early December.

I don’t know if anyone else is noticing this but the cases seem to be falling much faster than they have in the past. I am wondering if we are starting to see some early vaccine results. Three weeks ago (so allowing 2 weeks for immunity to come through and a week to catch it and get symptoms) we had 2 million having been jabbed. So roughly 1 in 30 people who should have tested positive for it today won’t.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 02/02/2021 21:42

I have been wondering about the rapid drops too. Pretty sure we were expecting them to slow down a bit before now. However they keep Coming Smile

CaveMum · 03/02/2021 07:38

Morning all! Today’s the day we hopefully get into double figures (I know it’s may have already happened, but you know I mean the reporting!).

Great series of Tweets from the FT stats guy on the AZ efficacy over time. I do love a graph! He also links to the paper in The Lancet, which I did look at but it just looks like random letters and numbers on a page to me Grin

I apologise for reading the DM this morning but they are reporting that the government are aiming to get all adults completely vaccinated by the end of August. That's fantastic news for the next school year!

Frazzled2207 · 03/02/2021 08:48

Regarding the fall in cases I’d be surprised if it was making much of difference yet with older people (as they are mostly hiding at home anyway) although I’d expect to see hospitalisations drop.

However having vaccinated almost all the HCPs will make an enormous difference. Not heard the recent view but nurse friends tell me that the staff absence rate due to people being off with the virus was extremely high a few weeks ago

Yep, our ED was hit really hard with staff being off. Hopefully the vaccinations will help with staffing issues soon (even if it makes isolating as a contact even more irritating!). COMPLETELY ANECDOTALLY I've seen fewer coming in with shortness of breath, but then our rates are much lower across the board too so a lot of that is lockdown related. Will be interesting to see some proper stats on it soon.
Frazzled2207 · 03/02/2021 08:54

@WetJan
Do you think having the vaccine will make you “immune” from having to self isolate as a contact? Possibly not yet but surely that would be a massive step forward for hospitals (though nurse friends tell me it wasn’t really happening as just not sustainable- or all contacts went home there’s be literally no one in)

WetJan · 03/02/2021 10:48

@Frazzled2207 I'm not sure. The science behind isolating as contacts is a weigh up of risk anyway.
When I had a positive contact I was told I didn't need to isolate as we were in full PPE but I ended up positive too. The vaccines will reduce the amount of staff being actually positive so less contact isolations as a result.

PuzzledObserver · 03/02/2021 10:52

The news about the AZ vaccine reducing transmission is excellent. I am cautiously theorising that the same will apply to all vaccines, and to immunity through infection as well. After all, vaccines work by provoking the immune system, surely the immune system will respond in the same way, though not necessarily to the same degree, however it is provoked.

So, figures off the top of my head to illustrate this. Percentage outcomes for people exposed to Coronavirus:

Unprotected

  • no infection at all: 20
  • asymptomatic infection: 20
  • mildly symptomatic: 50
  • severe disease: 10

Previously infected

  • no infection at all: 70
  • asymptomatic infection: 15
  • mild symptoms: 14
  • Severe disease: 1

Vaccinated:

  • no infection at all: 90
  • asymptomatic: 5
  • mild symptoms: 5
  • severe disease: 0

How does that sound?

(Just to reiterate before someone asks me for my source, there is no source, this is me hypothesising on the basis of multiple reports and news coverage to date. Actual figures will vary!)

ErrolTheDragon · 03/02/2021 11:09

Not the official figures, just an estimate - but showing over 10 million (partially or fully) vaccinated now.
