6.3 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4129412-1-5-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

6,353,321 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 1 in every 8.3 adults. It’s a truly remarkable achievement to have reached so many people in such a short space of time.

Welcome to the new thread and let’s keep the positive vibes going! Grin

Based on the latest figures, an average of 418,166 first doses of vaccine would be needed each day in order to meet the government’s target of 15 million

I’m not sure where the 15 million figure has come from, as it was only ever 13.9 million on the original BBC graphic (attached). So that’s the figure I’m sticking with! Smile

If you go by 13.9 million, it means we need to vaccinate 353,459 people every day up to and including February 14th in order to hit the target.

So 13.5m or 15m from the BBC depending what mood they are in? I'll stick with the latter.

JAB JAB JAB

BAM BAM BAM

Grin

Why are so many second doses being given do we think? Are we already 12 weeks on from first doses?

FourTeaFallOut · 29/01/2021 17:13

I don't think there's enough for it to be co-ordinated like that, coming in at 1kish/ day. I think 2nd doses might be mopping up spare doses, at a guess.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 29/01/2021 17:15

On the latest news re EU. I want to say this. The news papers keep saying we are due 3.5 million doses of Pfizer in the next 3 weeks. They also say a total of 9 million doses by the middle of February should arrive from AZ and Pfizer combined.

Therefore we will still have whatever we have stored and 5.5 million doses by mid February no matter what happens with Pfizer.

That is not a small amount and more AZ arriving after that. The Pfizer and AZ manufacturing issues in the EU are only expected to take a few weeks to sort. I can't see any slow down of vaccinations being that much or taking to long.

Suzi888 · 29/01/2021 17:17

I don’t think it’s great. I think it’s stupid and a PR stunt. My mum had the Pfizer jab, at least 12 weeks til the next jab said the nurse, by which time it’ll probably be ineffective?!?! . Confused So yeah amazing.

alwuehd · 29/01/2021 17:24

@Suzi888 🙄

Londt · 29/01/2021 17:25

Ah yes, of course @FourTeaFallOut I didn’t think of that.

@Suzi888 you could google how effective one dose of the Pfizer is, it might help to put your mind at ease.

alwuehd · 29/01/2021 17:27

@Suzi888 your Mum will get a good amount of protection from one jab, and the 'nurse' is talking nonsense. if you've got nothing nice to say this isn't the place for you. Plenty of other threads for the terminally miserable 😁

MaddieElla · 29/01/2021 17:31

Yes @Suzi888 totally ineffective. Like your attempt to sour the mood on this thread.

Off you pop and do some reading.

JovialNickname · 29/01/2021 17:42

I think the vaccine creation and rollout has been amazing too. Really impressive especially when you compare the UK vaccination programme to that of other countries!

I'm normally one of the doom mongers, but I think it's important to recognise Covid successes when we have them.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 29/01/2021 17:47

The second doses are still being given by some doctors if you got your first dose in December. Before the schedule changed.

They have said as their patients were told they would get second dose in 3 weeks. They wish to honor that because otherwise doctor patient trust would be broken. Or something like that.

This is about the oxford/AZ but expected to be the same from Pfizer. Hence the schedule change:

Oxford University conducted the so-called Oxford trial in UK and Brazil, and we have data for patients who received the vaccine in one-month interval, 2 or 3 months interval. First of all, we believe that the efficacy of one dose is sufficient: 100 percent protection against severe disease and hospitalisation, and 71-73 percent of efficacy overall. The second dose is needed for long term protection. But you get a better efficiency if you get the 2nd dose later than earlier.

Given the number of people who've had covid and are now immune-did I read that 2% of the population are catching it each day?-doesn't it mean, with the vaccinations, that quite a large percentage of the population are now free from fear of catching it? (Or at least will be within 2-3 weeks of being innoculated).

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/01/2021 18:14

Always someone who has to bring a positive post down.

boys3 · 29/01/2021 18:21

So not far off 8 million now.

8 MILLiON

Although I fear my prediction of 10 million achieved on 3rd Feb made Waac back on the last thread might now be a tad pessimistic. Smile

Defaultname · 29/01/2021 18:24

Just in case anyone's misread my previous post (I'm sure I put it badly):

Most people survive Covid.
It seems that the vast majority of survivors are immune from re-catching it, for a period at least.
Many people are therefore at no personal present risk from Covid, having acquired antibodies/T-cells, or whatever.
Millions of people are now vaccinated against Covid.

Am I right in thinking that quite a large proportion of the population are now in a much better position re the virus than they were before?

If so, this seems good news.

buttery81 · 29/01/2021 18:29

I just checked back - I predicted 10 million on 3rd February (as in, 10 million announced on 4th February as the latest figure up to and including the 3rd). Can we do it?!?! Grin

I think you may be confused with a recent “1 in 50 people currently have the virus” statement.

1 in 50 is 2%, but that’s not how many are newly catching it each day, it’s how many have it at any one time. Once you catch it, you have it for several days (not sure how many)

The nurse didn’t say it would be ineffective, just that it would be 12 weeks till the second dose. That’s how I read it. Poster or her mum is just assuming that it’ll be not effective

alwuehd · 29/01/2021 18:45

@daisypond oh yeah you're right 🤦‍♀️ apologies to the nurse.

CoffeeWithCheese · 29/01/2021 19:29

They warn you repeatedly when you're getting it done that not to assume you're OK now, keep behaving like before - could that have been misinterpreted?

Had my first jab today (I'm a healthcare student so we get it under the frontline healthcare staff category) and actually it was incredibly well organised, efficient and really cheerful kind staff (I did notice from the name badges that I'd happened to get one of the nursing top bods just by luck of the draw). Lady in front of me panicked about getting it done and they had one (well dishy) doctor reassuring her and making clear it was her choice totally.

psychomath · 29/01/2021 23:10

Everything's going in the right direction now - hospitalisations down, patients in hospital down, cases less than half of what they were at the start of the month, deaths per day are falling sharply, and it's the third highest day of vaccinations in the UK since the program began. Northern Ireland absolutely smashed their previous record and vaccinated 1.11% of the population in ONE DAY - the equivalent proportion would be over 600,000 jabs in England alone!

EasterIssland · 29/01/2021 23:13

How many have we done in the last week? I was checking today for myself and was predicted may -July I believe by the calculator ... now you can choose the last 7 days but it doesn’t tell you how much is it.
