6.3 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4129412-1-5-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

6,353,321 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 1 in every 8.3 adults. It’s a truly remarkable achievement to have reached so many people in such a short space of time.

Welcome to the new thread and let’s keep the positive vibes going! Grin

@Londt I agree that the EU vaccine storm is a little unnerving. But we're doing fabulously well in this country, so we've just got to ignore the noise, keep calm and carry on. I don't know why exactly but I'm feeling really positive today - perhaps it's the warmer weather. I'm really looking forward to today's number! Grin

I'd love to get over the 7.4 mark today Grin

Also @Londt - I just found this:

Will this affect the supply of vaccines to the UK?

Of the three vaccines approved in the UK, any potential restrictions on exports from the EU would only affect the Pfizer-BioNTech jab.

The UK's supply of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is not believed to be impacted as our consignment for the jab is made mostly in Oxfordshire and Staffordshire.

The UK has not yet received any of the Moderna jab - the third vaccine approved by regulators - and does not expect to get any until spring.

Boris Johnson has said he has “total confidence” in the UK’s supply of vaccines.

The Prime Minister told a Downing Street press briefing that the delivery of vaccines was a “multinational effort” and the UK would continue to work with European partners.

With the Pfizer I think they may even have issues trying that. Politically and because of this:

Croda is to play a vital role in the production of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine.

The East Yorkshire headquartered specialty chemical company has entered into an agreement with the US giant to supply a new ingredient that carries the active element into the body.

It will be produced at sites in the UK and US.

CaveMum · 28/01/2021 12:33

The key issue around vaccine supply, as I understand it, is that they don't like to travel it very far. There's a massive plant in India making the AZ vaccine but I think there are concerns about travelling it across the globe to Europe from there (quality control issues, potential security issues, etc).

I'd like to think that the voices at the EU who are calling for UK supplies to be diverted to them are in the minority and that the main grown ups in the room are dealing with this appropriately.

MaddieElla · 28/01/2021 12:39

I think (thankfully) that people are seeing the EU situation as it is, a complete piss take. Even die hard remainers on here can see they are making a mistake and were ill prepared. There are a few "EU til I die" types saying we should share, but can you imagine if the roles were reversed? The EU and country leaders would be laughing their heads off at us, saying we told you so that Brexit was a bad idea. They certainly wouldn't be sharing their supplies with us, Little England.

So I am staying positive that we already have the capacity of supplies to get us over the line with the top groups. I hope the numbers increase as the last few days haven't been great. But every day brings more people being protected - half vaccinated Grin - while other countries are still scrambling to get their fingers out their arses.

BAM.

@Londt

Apologies for bringing a negative question to the thread but I don’t dare ask or check anywhere else as 99% of the answers will be shrouded in doom: should we be concerned about the EU demanding our vaccines and threatening to block our Pfizer delivery?

I really hope nothing impacts on us reaching the mid Feb target and all the most vulnerable can be vaccinated.

Most of the threats have come from a handful of MEPs. It's a bit like when one of the more rebellious backbenchers kicks off about something, it makes for a few good news headlines but they've no real influence.

If the EU were to try and block exports, they would be bringing down unimaginable diplomatic consequences upon themselves.

@lurker101 could you possibly post a link to the source for that image, please? When I blow it up, it becomes illegible (could be my eyes) and I can't find it anywhere in the presser slides (or anywhere else I've looked)

lurker101 · 28/01/2021 13:13

@PuzzledObserver of course 😊

If there’s one thing we have got right, it’s the vaccine. Go us!

QueenPawPaws · 28/01/2021 13:26

Both my parents are now booked in for the first week of feb Smile

PuzzledObserver · 28/01/2021 13:35

@lurker101 - thanks. Now I can see it applies to Northern Ireland!

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 28/01/2021 13:38

It's really useful and uplifting to see the ages and areas where people's relatives are being vaccinated.

It gives us a snapshot idea of how it is going.

CoffeeandCroissant · 28/01/2021 14:44

Based on today's weekly report (which includes some age breakdown data), the following % of 80+ had a 1st dose by 24-Jan:

East Of England: 79.9%
London: 65.4%
Midlands: 80.5%
North East & Yorks: 83.7%
North West: 81.8%
South East: 78.3%
South West: 83.4%

England Totals: 79.7%

Dodgy maths alert, but if we project the same age ratios to the latest data then it gives the following % of 80+ 1st doses:

East Of England: 86 %
London: 72 %
Midlands: 86 %
North East & Yorks: 89 %
North West: 87 %
South East: 84 %
South West: 90 %

England Total: 86 %

My parents and CEV brother (all priority group 4) are getting their jabs tomorrow. I feel so relieved that in a few weeks they will have a good amount of protection SmileSmile

Londt · 28/01/2021 15:26

Thank you all Smile

I knew I could rely on this thread to put me back on my calm cloud Grin apologies for falling off it.

Not long now until we get today’s figures. I have a cup of tea and a kitkat lined up to celebrate them Brew

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 15:30

CoffeeandCroissant

Thank you for posting that. All is looking brilliant.

I was concerned about London percentages last we bit someone pointed out to me we have a lower percentage of elderly than most places. So hopefully as we go down the age brackets the figures will look better here too.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 15:31

Not wanting to be a downer but a genuine question: should we be worried about the fact it’s only jab 1 most people have had? That’s my only niggle against this otherwise really good news.

alwuehd · 28/01/2021 16:25

@DeusEx there is still a significant level of protection from just one vaccination. The majority of the protection comes from the first injection with the second providing this protection long term.

CaveMum · 28/01/2021 16:49

New numbers are out! coronavirus.data.gov.uk/?_ga=2.145676784.535231289.1611852290-440513932.1611609206

282,812 jabs given yesterday.
That takes us to 7,447,199 first doses (so close to 7.5 million!)

thatgingergirl · 28/01/2021 16:53

CaveMum I don't think Scottish numbers are included in that (I think they have some technical glitch?). Certainly there is no blue on the block graph today, so there's more to come!

doublemix · 28/01/2021 16:57

Is there a reason that the daily numbers are down on last week not that I don't think it's great just wondered why the difference?

CaveMum · 28/01/2021 16:57
