The legislation has been extended to give local councils lockdown powers until the 17th of July ???

Why on Earth ?? If the vaccine works... why will we need to be locked down in the summer ?

Are we just going to be trapped forever

I feel so miserable

This is the sort of thing some people said would happen.
No idea if true or not.

Cant see it holding when nice weather comes, unless there is going to be a threat of serious fines. Or jail time.

But I mean easing of restrictions, yes people will begin to meet up and there will be larger groups but it will be illegal. I don’t understand why they can’t ease restrictions when everyone’s vaccinated

I can’t really see a clear end to it all - this just feels like normal life now.

lightand · 24/01/2021 15:10

To cheer you up a bit, Israel who has vaccinated more people than even the UK, says that they are already seeing a marked decrease in transmission rate.

We never know what is around the corner, one way or another @Pink98. We need to make the best of each day as it comes.

BonnieDundee · 24/01/2021 15:11

"Three weeks to flatten the curve" Hmm

redcandlelight · 24/01/2021 15:12

some people don't want to br vaccinated, dome people can't be vaccinated and some won't (yet) be vaccinated (children).

op it's ok to have a moan, it's shit. but hopefully by the summer we will have a better idea how to safely get everything started up again.

But the issue now is even with things looking brilliant on the vaccine front, there’s no plans to end lockdown before at least July . Why do we need to lockdown a vaccinated population

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/01/2021 15:13

Not everyone will be vaccinated by July though.

Given the current nhs state, cases etc I’d rather they had more powers to reduce that so we don’t end up back here again.

whataballbag · 24/01/2021 15:14

Certainly feels that was at the minute doesn't it.

MrGruWeLoveYou · 24/01/2021 15:14

Where has anyone said lockdown won't end until July?

Pink98 · 24/01/2021 15:15

The Government has extended the legislation to July the 17th

Of course it will end, all pandemics do. Also, we will learn to live with an acceptable amount of risk with Covid the way we do with every other virus. As a pp said Israel have said the vaccinations are making a difference so keep positive people!

MrGruWeLoveYou · 24/01/2021 15:17

But that's just a period of time to cover something that might or might not need to happen. There are powers in place to do many things. It doesn't meant they they need to be used. Just because the power is there to extend a lockdown doesn't mean it will happen.

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/01/2021 15:20

By July we should know how effective the vaccines actually are. Having said that I believe lockdowns will be a thing for the next several years

But this is my question, if vaccines are effective, why are lockdowns necessary ?

As if people will put up with rolling lockdowns for YEARS

Mammaaof · 24/01/2021 15:25

They don't yet know if people who have had the vaccine can still spead it either

Pink98 · 24/01/2021 15:25

They can lockdown all they like. NO WAY am I locking myself away til july. The minute the cases are down and my DSis (ICU nurse) tells me the ICU is back to functioning levels, I am having coffee with my friends again. She said she will be doing the same. I am losing my mind. I have a 2 year old and a newborn and no family support. I will go on for as long as is absolutely necessary, but no longer, so they can legislate all they want, I dont care.

Bambi1222 · 24/01/2021 15:32

Can someone explain it for a dummy. What does it mean, lockdown till July with schools shut/ no eviction till July? Thanks

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/01/2021 15:34

@BonnieDundee

"Three weeks to flatten the curve" Hmm
And "it'll be over by Christmas"...although tbf to Boris he didn't specify which Christmas.
BubblyBarbara · 24/01/2021 15:39

Restrictions will ease by summer. They just won’t go away entirely

BalloonDinosaur · 24/01/2021 15:40

Because they don't really know how effective the vaccines are. Especially as our government has cancelled most of the 2nd doses.

Even the manufacturers came out and said they had no data to suggest the Pfizer vaccine was effective with such a large gap between 2nd and 3rd doses.

And there is, currently unverified, research from Israel suggesting that people were only protected up to 33% with 1 dose of Pfizer so the whole thing seems a bit pointless now. What a shit show

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/01/2021 15:40

@Pink98 that’s the thing, the vaccines were released without actually knowing a great deal about the virus to start with. Those who have received their doses are essentially part of a large scale clinical trial for effectiveness and as time progresses we will know more about whether they work or not. The risk is too great to simply say ah we’ve got a vaccine back to normal we go. It doesn’t work that way and in all honesty will never be that way.

If they do work and enough people have been inoculated then lockdowns will ease. Vaccines are not an instant quick fix, particularly ones for novel viruses such as this.
