The legislation has been extended to give local councils lockdown powers until the 17th of July ???

Why on Earth ?? If the vaccine works... why will we need to be locked down in the summer ?

Are we just going to be trapped forever

I feel so miserable

It takes time to vaccinate everyone , until you have gone through a lot of people you need lockdown or low enough cases that you can manage with test and trace and isolate

No one knows quite how many "a lot of people" is but we are pretty sure it's at least 28 million ... the over 50s plus vulnerable. To have had both vaccine doses and wait a couple more weeks for b them to take effect

It's highly likely ( I hope ) that we will hit the 28 ish million at about the same time as this lockdown brings cases very low.

It's a long time , but it's a lot less than we have lived through already

Mackie2020 · 24/01/2021 15:44

Just because they can extend lockdown restrictions until July doesn't mean they will.

frozendaisy · 24/01/2021 15:49

It will end.

Might take until mid-July until all adults not just priority groups have been offered a vaccine but it will end.

And then, fingers crossed, it won't return in these numbers.

Have a cosy evening and forget about the rest of the world today it will still be there just as depressing tomorrow.

BalloonDinosaur · 24/01/2021 15:49

*1st and 2nd doses, not 2nd and 3rd!

atomt · 24/01/2021 15:50

People in the priority groups getting their first jab in February won't get their second jab until May.

It's not enough to vaccinate the over 70s when a large proportion of hospital patients with covid are in their 60s, 50s, 40s and younger too. Most patients are also staying in hospital for several weeks- they are surviving but need longer treatments so the pressure on hospitals will take a long time to ease.

Every time the virus replicates and infects another person, it also has the potential to mutate. It's really not a good idea to let it run wild among the population. It would be awful if we got to early summer and had to start over again if the current vaccines no longer worked for a new variant.

Ultimately though they haven't said lockdown will last until July anyway.

Angel2702 · 24/01/2021 15:51

They haven’t said lockdown until July they’ve simply extended the legislation in advance in case it is needed. The legislation has been in place since March last year. That doesn’t mean we’ve been in lockdown since then. It just means there is something in place so if there are problems in local areas it can be cited on quickly. Doesn’t even have to be a full lockdown they can close certain premises only without closing others.

TheKeatingFive · 24/01/2021 15:52

People will start doing their own thing regardless OP. The tide is well and truly turning against lockdowns now.

BooBahBoo · 24/01/2021 15:52

Yeah, I’ve accepted 2021 is a write off. I am on maternity leave at the minute. Due to go back to work in April. My whole leave has been spent in and out of lockdown. Absolutely not what I had planned, or wanted. Two under 2 at home with me every day, feel awful for them. Barely seen anyone. Minimal support.

I am lucky I have a job to go back to (although it’s a “key worker” role so I’m sure I’ll catch Covid upon my return, anyway), but there’s not a whole lot to look forward to. I can’t see myself getting the vaccine until November time.

I’ve just had enough, really.

bigchris · 24/01/2021 15:55

We are fucking up the vaccine

We're the only country having a stupid 12 weeks in between each dose

The scientists say 12 weeks is too long

That might be the case with seeing family and friends in houses but they can't go for meals , have their hair cut, go on holiday , go to concerts etc

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/01/2021 15:58

@TheKeatingFive how exactly will people do their own thing? If non essential shops are closed and all bars restaurants etc are shut? I’m sure the defiant ones have already been doing what they wanted in terms of illegal raves and household mixing etc.

There’s only so much rebellion people can do though and ultimately it will just prolong the period of closures. Are people really stupid enough to not grasp that concept?

TheKeatingFive · 24/01/2021 15:59

Well obviously.

But when it becomes clear that people are getting on with their lives regardless, there will be intense lobbying for other sectors of society to open and that will be difficult to ignore.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/01/2021 16:00

I just pray that it doesn't mutate into
even more danger to life or is resistant to our current vaccine Sad

The thought of them having to develop new vaccines every year like they do flu (last years flu vaccine was 4 strains of flu injected)

Pink98 · 24/01/2021 16:02

But that’s no good, this secret defiance is awful.

Dozens of police turned up at my block of flats last night, there was a huge party going on and people spilling out , screaming, banging our door to try and get in away from the police.

This is no way for our society to be

Keep people away from their family and friends long enough and that’s what happens. 🤷‍♀️

I’m not talking about massive parties necessarily. But seeing family members and friends.

Reallyhadenough · 24/01/2021 16:04

I can't see how the vaccine will work as it is not being used as it should. It was tested with a 3 week break between the 1st and 2nd dose, but the 2nd dose is now being pushed back

midgebabe · 24/01/2021 16:14

Most of the uk will get the modern a vaccine that has ... inadvertently... been tested with a 12 week break, as the trial was halted at one point for safety checks

There are several reasons:
  • Most healthy people won't be vaccinated by July (best estimate is August/September, could be later).
  • The vaccine might not protect against the South African variant, which has reached the UK.
  • If Covid continues to spread within the UK; then even if the most vulnerable are protected (which may not be the case as above) then new mutations of the virus are very likely to appear (this is what happens when there are high levels of Covid in circulation). The vaccine might not work for these strains. These mutations could also be far more deadly or far more contagious.
PhilCornwall1 · 24/01/2021 16:20

For god same, don't let Johnson, Hancock, Whitty, Vallance and the Van-Taminator read that, or we'll still be in this balls up until the next General Election, where a new covid law will be written that if we don't vote for Johnson, we won't be allowed out to vote!

The UK has bought only 17 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, enough for 8.5 million people.

Most of us will get the AZ/Oxford one as they ordered the most doses of that.

TwirpingBird · 24/01/2021 16:21

@Lovely1a2b3c well arent you a ray of sunshine. Talk about expecting the worst. You must be a ball of stress.

midgebabe · 24/01/2021 16:23

Omg.. I said moderns and I meant Oxford ! Sorry ! Twit !

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 24/01/2021 16:24

Not everyone will be vaccinated by July and they are probably worried about these new mutation taking hold in the mean time.

Op things will get better, it will ease.. We just have to hang on in there until they do.

I'm just praying, measures for next winter will be put into place now.

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 24/01/2021 16:25

"Everyone" won't be vaccinated until
autumn... 🤷🏻‍♀️

faerin · 24/01/2021 16:25

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

Not everyone will be vaccinated by July though.

Given the current nhs state, cases etc I’d rather they had more powers to reduce that so we don’t end up back here again.

Every person in the country doesn't need to be vaccinated to come out of lockdown though.

The reason we're in lockdown isn't to get to zero covid. It's to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed.

The moment the pressure on the NHS reduces as a result of sufficient vulnerable people having been vaccinated, the lockdown should end. Otherwise what is even the point in it?
