For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

My dear friend who works in a London hospital as a consultant has been given both of her vaccinations. I was so overjoyed to hear it as I had been incredibly worried about them. So assuming most HCP are vaccinated by now.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 11:41

It does sound like the NHS staff take up has been good. I think in some areas it is the care home staff that are more reluctant. Hopefully the more people vaccinated the more that will change because vaccination will be the norm.

@Pomegranatespompom

The transmission is interesting - not to make a post about me (!) but I am antibody negative, last checked in December despite commuting, working in a big London NHS trust, having contact with + patients plus half my team have been +ve (some very unwell and very sadly 3 deaths in my trust, 2 in my dept). I have no idea how I am negative with so much exposure. I had my vaccine early Jan and continue to do twice a week lateral flow testing, all this data is being collected. Re staff refusing vaccines - I think this is very low numbers - we've had an uptake that must be over 90% due to numbers given of vaccines given and numbers of staff in the hospital.
From memory isn't it the case that not everyone seems to show antibodies even if they've had it? Something like t cells instead? Someone more clued up can hopefully make this make more sense!
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 11:52

The only person I know that has needed hospital treatment for covid (other than friends child with life limiting illness) is a teacher. They were in hospital recovering from an operation when they caught it. Ended needing oxygen.

So anything that can possibly reduce hospital transmission is fantastic. Also stop staff sickness and shortages too.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 11:55

Yes T cells in younger people fight off covid. So they don't necessarily make antibodies. They definitely have said not all adults need to make antibodies too or something like that.

This can be the case with a lot of things. My aunt was a midwife and never reacted to the TB test despite having the jab in childhood and multiple times at work. I think she ended up signing a disclaimer to stop having to have it. Not sure of the science why though...

[quote JemimaPyjamas]This is bloody marvellous! As is this - I am hoping other countries will start to follow over the course of the year.

This is just stupid. At least until we know how much the vaccine reduces transmission.
Researchers have promising signs, but that is not proof. So all this will allow is more transmission to places which have fared well so far potentially.
And less of a chance of becoming ill on holiday.
I would not classify this as good news.

BessMarvin · 28/01/2021 12:11

Thanks I knew people here would know what I meant! Grin

New vaccine centre at withdrawn stadium in brighton and testing centre on Preston park lawns. My mum who is in her 70’s and in london, is having first jab Friday

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/01/2021 12:15

You are right about transmission if the the research comes back that vaccination doesn't greatly stop transmission. Obviously travel passports would be wrong. We will have to watch this space.

On a more positive note. Stories and ideas like these may get people that would have not bothered getting vaccination to do it now. The thought of not having the holiday they want or being able to travel for business etc.

Yeah, it's not surprising really though, there's just over 1m cev who don't fall under the earlier age categories. If they were doing it in strict order we'd all be done on the 13, 14 and 15th of Feb.

Excellent point fourtea - I'd not thought of it like that. (Still slower than Okehampton though!)

Pomegranatespompom · 28/01/2021 12:50

My immunology is sketchy but I don’t have antibodies too measles despite several boosters do the T cell thing would fit. I’m going to ask someone in Imm!

Pomegranatespompom · 28/01/2021 12:54

@MoltenLasagne ha yes occupational health follow people up very aggressively. I had to get the infectious diseases consultant involved who said no point given more boosters as I must have natural immunity.
Occ health wrote I was non compliant 🤣

Sorry off topic !

AstraZeneca vaccine should not be given to over-65s, says Germany

This could be good news..... in that they don't want our supplies any more!!

Agreed - it’s a bit of a dangerous game to play on one hand having the bloc moan about the supply issues and then on the other, one of the member states trying to discredit the vaccine’s efficacy! Hmm
FourTeaFallOut · 28/01/2021 14:32

Do we know when phase three of the US AstraZeneca trials will conclude?

BigWoollyJumpers · 28/01/2021 14:34

J&J submitting tomorrow.

Level75 · 28/01/2021 14:38

Ohhh exciting!
BigWoollyJumpers · 28/01/2021 14:40

@FourTeaFallOut

Do we know when phase three of the US AstraZeneca trials will conclude?
This from NIH US Clinical trials website:

Actual Study Start Date : August 28, 2020
Estimated Primary Completion Date : March 23, 2021
Estimated Study Completion Date : February 21, 2023

Quite a while yet.

midgedude · 28/01/2021 14:40

If the Germans have a similar priority order to us, perhaps they are really saying " don't worry citizens the delay is irrelevant to our vaccination program because we don't need that brand yet"

FourTeaFallOut · 28/01/2021 14:42

Ah, nevermind. Good to hear about Johnson&Johnson!

chri55ie · 28/01/2021 15:12

Ooo where did you read about the J and J vaccine?

OrangeBananaFish · 28/01/2021 15:14

Is that the results for J&J tomorrow? So another few weeks until possible approval? I know I should know after following AZ, but I cant remember now

fadingfast · 28/01/2021 15:29

I’ve just seen on Twitter that DHSC are reporting good results from the clinical evaluation of the LamPORE saliva tests, suitable for mass community testing.
