For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

Not wishing to divert this thread so I'll just say that I don't think Ruth Davidson is a credible witness. Grin

Back to the good news.....the UK generally is doing so well with the vaccine rollouts, some parts quicker than others. At last, something to be happy about.

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 19:38

The care home residents and staff being vaccinated is good news FifeQuine that's for sure.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 27/01/2021 19:42

@FifeQuine

Seriously, on a good news thread you're having a go at a politician while saying she did a good job?
That is because I don't disagree her as a leader (well most the time). She has made some good decisions during this pandemic.

It is her personality that grates at me.

So well done Nic for getting your nursing homes doneStar

However you are a annoying petty person some times Wine

Wales has been worrying me a bit with their vaccine roll out. However speaking to old friends the rural areas are starting to see the vaccine now.

tobee · 27/01/2021 20:44

Re Zoe; I've always thought of it as something to contribute my small bit of info to rather than looking at it to extrapolate a much of a wider set of data.

Frazzled2207 · 27/01/2021 21:11

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum
yes wales is of concern to me too (Welsh but don't live in Wales) .
However as of today they had vaccinated well over 300,000 which is over 10 %. I'll relax a bit when my parents get theirs (they are 74) - they have a letter virtually promising that they'll get to them by the 15th, they still don't have a date but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt (for now). TBF Wales as Scotland had a policy of starting with care homes and HCPs, the former of which is much slower going.

My mother is half way up a Welsh mountain (probably best place for her😉).

Hopefully she will get a letter or text soon.

7.1 million vaccinations- so fantastic.

TeaInTheGarden · 27/01/2021 23:06

I can’t read this as behind a paywall, can anyone read it and share info?! Headline looks very positive!

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 23:06

Cutting transmission would be a woohoo moment for me.

clarexbp · 27/01/2021 23:07

What do you all think of this chart? Very, very early days to be drawing any conclusions, but to me, it looks like deaths in the top 3 age groups (80-85, 85-90, 90+) are starting to fall at a faster rate than the younger groups.

Oh please please please let this be

TeaInTheGarden · 27/01/2021 23:33

I’ve been wondering for a while about the impact of frontline staff being vaccinated. Haven’t really heard much talk of it until now. I guess because it’s all about transmission and we are not sure yet.
So I’m very very pleased to see hints of it coming through! Particularly with the new variant complicating things.
Remotes to sign up for a trial of the telegraph just to read this article!

TeaInTheGarden · 27/01/2021 23:34

Definitely a woohoo moment if it’s true @LetItGoGo !!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 27/01/2021 23:40

Good point about the hospital staff and possible reduction of transmission.

I have been surprised that we are not inundated with educated guesses about how much things could fall. Only seen a couple of graphs so far.

Suppose it is the big unknown and the experts don't want to put their necks on the line. Still Israel's numbers are looking bloody brilliant so far.

Omg that is such a ray of hope - I really hope this is the case!

Not only that, but it will lead to staff sickness and rates of having to self-isolate go down as well, which can only be a good thing and hopefully mean less exhausted and overworked staff.

sometimesamazinggrace · 28/01/2021 00:03

Following for some daily doses of hope. Me and my 4.5 year old are living with my 65+ aged parents so counting down the weeks till they've been vaccinated.

TeaInTheGarden · 28/01/2021 00:06

I do think we can hope to see a reduction in community infection from vaccinating HCPs.
Totally me speculating here, but- surely lots of community transmission is seeded by hospital staff taking it home? How can it not be?
If we stop those chains this has to help.... in addition to the benefit of vaccinating them for their own sake so they don’t get sick.

So in short- vaccinating HCPs is obviously the best thing for them personally, but could end up being a great thing for public health too.

Let’s hope so. Come on vaccines!

TeaInTheGarden · 28/01/2021 00:09

^this is my speculation, not what the article is talking about. The reduction in hospital acquired infection is separate but equally awesome if true!

Lockdown IS working: Scientists behind Imperial College London study that claimed coronavirus cases weren't coming down in January update their findings and admit 'there IS a decline' and R is below one

Sorry daily mail reporting it.

Anyway look who have started to catch up with the rest of us. The REACT study latest up date.

Furries · 28/01/2021 01:40

@Pomegranatespompom

The numbers of children requiring treatment for covid remains v low in London.

It’s busy but admissions are dropping and we no longer have bed capacity problems. Staff are starting to be released back to normal areas.

Just wanted to share - hope reassuring.

That is great to hear, thank you for sharing. Both for those who are ill and the worry for their families, but also for even the smallest reprieve on the pressure the NHS are under.

Fingers crossed that the trend continues at a steady pace.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/01/2021 06:41

The Telegraph article:

Cases of Covid likely to have been caught in hospital have halved in three weeks, bringing hope that the rollout of vaccines to staff is beginning to slow transmission.

NHS data shows the number of cases has fallen from a high of 635 a day at the start of this month to 367 last week.

The trend came despite a rise in the total numbers of Covid sufferers in hospital from around 25,000 to 37,000 over the period.

On Wednesday night, Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, said early findings from Israel – which has already given first jabs to almost a third of its population – suggested they could cut rates of transmission by around 60 per cent.

However, Sir Patrick told a Downing Street briefing that he would be "extremely cautious" about making an assessment of the impact of the vaccines on transmission until there was "proper data" to assess.

Boris Johnson said proof about the impact of vaccines should emerge by the middle of February. A study by Public Health England (PHE), tracking 40,000 health workers – including those given jabs early in the vaccination programme – is expected to report its findings next month.

NHS staff were among those offered Covid jabs when the vaccination programme began in December, with a concerted push at the start of this month after the AstraZeneca jab became available.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/01/2021 06:45

Health and care workers were among more than 400,000 under-80s to have received jabs by the turn of the year, a number that rose to more than 1.8 million by mid-January.

Cases of probable hospital-acquired infection of Covid have been a major concern throughout the pandemic, with more than 11,000 such cases in the four weeks ending January 5. Government scientists have repeatedly expressed concern that the spread of the virus in hospitals is seeding infections in the community.

On Wednesday, Whitehall sources said trends in recent weeks gave some hope that vaccines may be beginning to have an impact on transmission, and PHE has embarked on research of thousands of healthcare workers in order to fully assess the effect.

Government scientists have repeatedly stressed that they do not yet know the impact of the vaccine on transmission of the virus, urging those who have the jab to keep following social distancing rules.

But Government sources said the recent drop in cases of "probable hospital acquired infections" – those where a diagnosis of Covid is made at least seven days after admission –gave some grounds for optimism.

One said: "We know that the vaccines have some impact on symptoms, so the hope is that this will translate into a reduction in transmission, but we don't yet have the evidence. It could be that we are just beginning to see some of these changes being played out in hospitals now growing numbers of staff have had their first jab."

However, experts said other policies, such as lockdown rules and the wider rollout of NHS staff testing, may also be having an impact on transmission rates.

The latest surveillance data from Imperial College suggests that infection rates are stable, with one in 64 people infected between January 6 and 22. However, scientists said the data showed some signs of a downtick, saying that was "really good news".
