For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

Yes and on transmissibility too.

Frazzled99 · 27/01/2021 17:27

Jumping on...I'm done with all the hate. Giving MN one more go. Thank you for this thread.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 17:29

Also brilliant news that there is an option for ecv children to have access to the vaccine off license, so long as it's in their best interest. That must be a huge relief for some parents.

@littleowl1

I have updated the table of cases in councils on the www.covidmessenger.com homepage with today's data release.

It remains so green! Hooray!

ie the vast majority of councils have falling cases week over week!

This is very good news indeed! So many councils are continuing to register week-over-week falls. Please goodness this trend will continue.

In England we have:
289 councils with falling cases week over week
26 councils with rising cases week over week

You can check your council on the table on www.covidmessenger.com and I do update them every day with the govt daily data release.

And, as always, you can click the columns to quickly sort the data in the table... particularly handy (I find) when you click the county column as it lets you see the situation in all the councils in your county easily.

Especially pertinent given the tiering decisions will almost certainly be at county level when the tiering system returns.

It's been reassuring to see the daily "wall of green" on the table. Please may it continue!!!

Thank you so much for this work. Thanks plus GinWineCake depending on your poison!
TheChineseChicken · 27/01/2021 17:43

I didn’t remake there was a briefing. Anything new or just confirming March potential schools date?

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 17:45

Parting shot form Vallance was prett good: "This isn't making widgets, these are complex quality-controlled biological processes. It's not surprising that supply goes up and down a bit, there will be changes week on week and that's to be expected."

BBCONEANDTWO · 27/01/2021 17:45

@MoltenLasagne

Not positive news, but more caution around the media spin on death figures. Different countries have different ways of recording CV deaths - in the UK we're being over-inclusive so including everyone dying with Covid in the stats and our excess deaths are lower. Other countries are only declaring people dying OF covid. I think its only going to be long term views of excess deaths that's really going to be able to ascertain the true impact.
I know - `I don't think we will find out the real loss of lives between countries for a long time. It's horrible comparing and if you compare we should all use the same data. I feel so sad for everyone who has lost someone.
littleowl1 · 27/01/2021 17:55

yeah I don't use Zoe - I think it was hugely helpful when we did not have localised data.

But now we do. And have for a while.

So why not look at the actual test results for your council rather than trying to determine a trend for your local area from a tiny sample set?

I checked my council - we have approx 100K people, and less than 5K were contributing to Zoe.

Such a small sample set is so susceptible to noise that I am not quite sure what it can possibly tell us given our actual test data is available. It was a very different story at the start of the pandemic when we had no local test result data. But we do now.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/01/2021 17:58

@FuzzyPuffling try not to let Zoe panic you - my town has been all over the place. I’ve started ignoring the local numbers and just checking nationwide. I’m putting it down to the fact that they obviously only test a sample of the population, so if in a particular area there is a weird amount of cases one day (but not necessarily a “spike”, could be all sorts of reasons) and it makes the data skewed.

Can't say I'm panicked by Zoe - a couple of care homes or a meat factory can change the whole thing, but as our data is county wide (rather than more localised) it does spread the numbers out to a less skewed version.

Pomegranatespompom · 27/01/2021 18:01

The numbers of children requiring treatment for covid remains v low in London.

It’s busy but admissions are dropping and we no longer have bed capacity problems. Staff are starting to be released back to normal areas.

Just wanted to share - hope reassuring.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/01/2021 18:02

I'm sorry that Zoe is seen as being so useless now. It was the first go at meaningful data and information for the populus, and Tim Spector talks a lot of sense.

This is fab news. I live between 2 of the worst hit areas (Burnley and Blackburn with Darwen) so bloody chuffed it's going down

God, I know this is meant to be the positive thread but bloody hell...some of the people on the other threads are so mean! I honestly think a lot of people come on mumsnet just to upset others. Someone started a thread saying how upset they were about the March 8th announcement and they were bellowed down with WHY ARE YOU UPSET, SUCK IT UP!

Anyway, in more positive news, I learned a bit about fracking today from my son's Geography lesson. Oh, and about a man who helped end slavery!

Thanks, again, for all your hard work. Leicester still rising but Coventry falling now (my mum lives there) along with North Leicestershire and Charnwood. Fingers crossed Leicester follows!
FuzzyPuffling · 27/01/2021 18:17

i have some issue with the testing of people in rural areas. Round here, you'd probably get tested if you live in Truro, near the hospital, but we have had long periods of time when our nearest test centre is 46 miles away, and only accessible by car. If you feel ill, there's no way you're going to do a 92 mile round trip for a test. The local test centre is a mobile one and shows up every few weeks (still a 15 mile round trip) with no warning or alerts.

I know quite a few people who have elected just to stay at home and not get tested because it is just too difficult. None of the systems are set up for rural isolated communities and it skews the figures. It's one of my bugbears! (You might have noticed!)

Yes I saw that. Typical vitriol

Taking out some frustration in life I reckon. Very bad though

Is the Mayor of London sitting on his doses as well? (7.2%)

No one in there right mind would have put our elf on a shelf Mayor of London in charge of any vaccine. So the answer is no to that one.

Though it did mean the roll out started slower in Scotland the dreadful Sturgeon got all your care homes done first. That should be keep your deaths lower. So that is good news.

FifeQuine · 27/01/2021 19:23

Seriously, on a good news thread you're having a go at a politician while saying she did a good job?

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 19:29

Perhaps, if I had heard that he did I would have used that as an example to demonstrate that the the vaccine numbers pertain to the numbers administered rather than numbers delivered. But thanks to Ruth Davidson and the recent media coverage, and the scale of numbers that was first on my mind.

Yes really good news. I had heard murmurs that this is what would happen but nothing official. So pleased for the kids and their families. It will be such a game changer for them.
