For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

It will feel very weird. We've had no-one in the house for almost a year (apart from the lovely chaps who delivered the new sofas). We will freeze in the dining room with the windows wide open, I think. I have told them we are a shielding household and they're fine and understanding.

When I had a covid test in August (pre minor op) I got them to do it on the front porch rather than come inside!

FuzzyPuffling · 26/01/2021 19:21

Ooh Marceline, tell me more. What happened at your first visit?

(We were specifically asked if we are om to have blood taken...no fainting here. Especially since DH had a haem cancer and enough needles to supply the whole EU! (Pre Hickman Line) and every couple of months I have bloods taken for my kidneys)

Hi everyone. The table on the www.covidmessenger.com homepage is updated with today's data release if you wish to check the latest cases in your council or the case rate per 100k.

Click the county column to get a quick snapshot of cases in councils across your county.

Currently, we have 286 councils with falling cases week-over-week and 28 with rising cases.

We did have a slightly higher number with falling cases about a week ago, but bear in mind three weeks ago there was just ONE council in England with falling cases week-over-week.

Yes - just 1.

Out of 315.

So 286 is fantastic progress!

And the downward trajectory has been maintained in most councils over the last week which is very reassuring indeed.

In addition, while total hospital cases remain high, we are seeing a drop in daily admissions in almost every region in England as you can see here:
www.covidmessenger.com/hospital-admissions/

This will translate to lower cases in hospital in the weeks ahead here:
www.covidmessenger.com/hospital-cases/

Thank you littleowl will take a look now.

Nice little cheer us up summary too. So thanks for that as well. Much needed after the last 24hrs.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/01/2021 19:44

I’ve lost you for a bit. Home schooling is taking over.

Re the vaccines. I know for certain that we pre ordered those vaccines before they had been trialled and it was known that they would work. Huge gamble on them, but it’s paid off. Because the UK pre ordered the amount of vaccines in the early days we should still get those vaccines no matter what.

I’m hoping anyway, I think it would be a big issue if we weren’t given what we had ordered considering that helped them produce the vaccines.

My borough has gone from around 1200 per 100k at Christmas, to 700s last week to 500s this week Smile

The Imperial College team is working on a booster to target new variants

It's amazing how quickly these teams are working.

Wow, not bad. Is anyone doing a rolling average on these figures?
That graph was meant yo be in answer to you Grin

Thank you Smile I'll add it to my impoverished Twitter collection Grin

Information regarding the Oxford vaccine, why UK has more of a supply and why Europe won't get anywhere trying to sue. The 8% efficacy fallacy is totally debunked as well:

Thanks to all who keep the good news coming. I've been lurking appreciatively on the last thread and this one, and now want to add my own piece of good news - my local district is now blue on the Govt map, after weeks and weeks of the dreaded purple! And looking at the South East, where I am, the transformation from purple to blue (almost) across the board is astonishing.

NeedingCoffee · 26/01/2021 21:59

Other drug manufacturers whose vaccine candidates are delayed a bit are going to use their capacity to manufacture the Pfizer one instead! I’m sure there’s something in it for them, but I love this spirit of cooperation, not to mention that Pfizer is allowing its IP into a “competitor’s” factories.

Oh that's a good plan to use sanofi bottling capacity!

Frazzled2207 · 26/01/2021 22:43

the article posted above by @BBCONEANDTWO is a very reassuring interview with AZ's CEO explaining quite clearly why we are ahead of the EU and why they haven't really got a (legal) leg to stand on. Also makes it clear he thinks the 3 month dose gap is a good idea in the case of this jab (Jury's still out on the Pfizer I think)

Agreed, I thought it was a good interview. And they are very clear about the desire to keep doing better, that they want to help world-wide and that it’s not-for-profit.

And he was right to gently point out that the media has a responsibility in how things are reported.

Fab chart in this article that shows at the rate we're vaccinating we could do majority of population in 3 months www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/01/25/world/europe/global-vaccination-population-rate.html

@tobee I know everyone is having a rubbish time- but it’s unfair to jump the queue. We were fortunate that our government took the risk - there are some things that we’ve got right thankfully.

[quote tobee]This looks like good news to me:-

Very positive article, thanks tobee. I’ve noticed a real mood change since I mainly read this thread with only occasional forays into the others, and there is so much regularly posted good news so thank you!
