For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

I think many European countries are more anti vax than us for a number of reasons- they have a greater reliance on complementary medicines and less trust in medics. Our free at the point of use health service does engender confidence that the staff aren’t just trying to make money out of you.
I have no experience of life in France myself, but from what I've heard they're way more 'hypochondriac' than us and go to the doctors at the slightest sign of illness. I'll let someone more familiar with all things French correct me on this one.
FuzzyPuffling · 25/01/2021 17:55

Crikey Fourtea, that's a telling chart. Estonia, 4.8%! Do they have to pay for it?

Ok so nearly twice as high than anticipated uptake for covid but still less than half the population.

@tobee

Just looking at the Sky News app and BBC News app updates on the Matt Hancock briefing and the difference in tone in the headline for the news from Moderna is startling! Shock
I am in a good mood. So avoiding the news websites for now
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 25/01/2021 18:06

@FuzzyPuffling

250 jabs a minute!

The French don't want vaccines, the Dutch are rioting and the Brits are queueing quietly and getting immunised in millions!

Well we are a nation famous for queueing 😂

Turns out it will save lifes👍❤

tootyfruitypickle · 25/01/2021 18:07

My local area in SE is GREEN! It was dark purple just before Christmas .

Weird how it moves around the country isn’t it, I mean we’re all under lockdown.
@FuzzyPuffling - Happy Birthday! Hope it’s as bright and sunny as it is where I am.

@1990s - I misread your sentence as “this thread is full of germs” 🤣
Back into the 400s! We’re down from 1200

Happy birthday Fuzzy

1990s · 25/01/2021 18:15

at other Midlanders. Where I’m from and where my family are was reported as the worst place in the country for vaccinations today Hmm

The positive I am taking from this is that someone has noticed, and hopefully this will bring a change!

tobee · 25/01/2021 18:16

With flu vaccine uptake in Europe be interested to know costs of vaccines and whether vulnerable get it free etc

tobee · 25/01/2021 18:16

You should @Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

tobee · 25/01/2021 18:16

Great information linked this afternoon and lovely 'photos.

Pomegranatespompom · 25/01/2021 18:37

I’ve just finished work (nhs London) - busy but calm. Going to catch up on this lovely thread.
Belated happy birthday !

Ok so nearly twice as high than anticipated uptake for covid but still less than half the population

But I don't think we know what the uptake coronavirus jab uptake will be for the over 65s in France either. Perhaps they will have higher levels of vaccine confidence than the youngsters. If that's the case then maybe we'll see a higher mitigating effect from the vaccine if it is concentrated in the vulnerable population?

FourTeaFallOut · 25/01/2021 18:47

Than a 40% take up would suggest at first glance?

Yes, I was sort of thinking out loud / musing - I realise the groups aren’t exactly the same etc.
theotherfossilsister · 25/01/2021 18:56

The rates on travelling tabby look lower today. I know fewer people have tests at the weekend but even so.

I'm enjoying watching my city fall.

Pomegranatespompom · 25/01/2021 18:56

The ONS data re teachers is hopefully also reassuring for being able to open schools, in combination with vaccines/ hospital capacity of course and before I get jumped on, with safety measures in place.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/01/2021 18:59

Ah, yeah, Captain Obvious here - sorry TheChineseChicken.

Sorry I know this is a good news thread but I’m getting really naffed off at posters who say nhs staff signed up for this.
Not this thread of course.

1990s · 25/01/2021 19:09

I’m with you @Pomegranatespompom, yes everyone signs up for an global emergency in a service underfunded for years, it’s their ideal...

Positive spin - VERY much hoping investment in health services of all kinds will be prioritised more going forward.

I don’t know anything about medical training but I doubt most HCPs go to work every day in the UK expecting to be exposed to potentially fatal viruses. Yes, in theory it’s an occupational hazard, but it must be pretty low risk in practice.

I know I said this on another thread. This idea of higher risk in normal times is a bizarre one. A surgeon, midwife, paediatrician doesn’t usually face higher risk.
