How long will people agree to make these sacrifices for?

Inspired by another thread here.

Let's assume the vaccines don't do what they should - either because the virus mutates so rapidly or because our government can't manage to adhere to Pfizer's protocol and a lone dose does nothing to protect people.

Then what?

For all those champing at the bit for curfews, harsher lockdowns, further restrictions on civil liberties - I'm genuinely curious - how long are you willing to maintain this status quo?

Would you be happy to still be in this lockdown in a year? Two years? Five years? Even if the lockdowns are eased and clamped down again, would you be willing to accept rolling lockdowns as a fact of life with no end in sight? At what point would those wanting tougher restrictions decide they can't live like this anymore?

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/01/2021 10:32

Well I think thats quite a de-humanising view to have. You think that if someone looses a family member in Malawi from malaria they are like, oh well, just another death? How do you know that

I'm talking about our western privilege that doesnt care that people in other countries are dying because it doesnt affect us. But the second that risk comes to OUR doorstep people are portraying themselves as selfless saints and calling others selfish for not caring about people dying. Yet they never cared about others before did they? I mean, of course this viewpoint is to a certain extent very natural but its also hugely hypocritical

Those rta deaths still happen, and now we can add another big global killer to the mix too.

I keep reiterating the point about basic science and how viruses transmit because some people clearly do not understand.

@Fembot123

I don't think in this entire argument you've contributed anything of value.[/quote]
I answered the OP, I not here to argue with the likes of you 😘

🤣🤣🤣

Your thinking is so limited.

Perfect28 · 22/01/2021 10:32

@TheKeatingFive

Go on then please enlighten me.
What do you mean by

'it's crystal clear what's going on'
Because obviously, it isn't.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/01/2021 10:33

@Fembot123

They may have even been flouters themselves *@GetOffYourHighHorse* 😱😂
Why are you laughing at people in hospital?
TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2021 10:33

'it's crystal clear what's going on'

The post that I quoted when I made that remark captures it perfectly. Go back and read it.

Fembot123 · 22/01/2021 10:33

I’m laughing at you and your histrionics

Perfect28 · 22/01/2021 10:34

It's not my definition @secretllama..its Maslows.

Oh my days. 🤣

TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2021 10:35

Those rta deaths still happen, and now we can add another big global killer to the mix too

The point is that no one gives a shit about them or tries to do anything to stop them. Because death doesn’t seem to matter much unless it’s the big Covid bogeyman

Perfect28 · 22/01/2021 10:35

I don't have to capture your attention @Fembot123, you're more than welcome to not read or reply Grin

nutellafortea · 22/01/2021 10:35

For the lady who asked me (sorry forgot your username), we both wfh and have eu passports (DH is half Italian, half Lebanese). Here everyone speaks English but we joined the local language class - just to be polite in my case, no hope of becoming fluent any time soon. DH loves languages and is having a blast learning another one.

You directed your comment at me, don’t do that and I will happily ignore you and your asinine comments.
LucilleTheVampireBat · 22/01/2021 10:37

It's not because I'm a selfless wonderful individual it's because I understand how a virus works and I understand that the higher the rate of transmission is, the more chance that it will affect me or someone close to me. Its also knowing that if hospitals are overrun and someone I love needs an IT bed then it won't be available

So you are pro-lockdown because hospitals being overrun could affect you or someone close to you. Which is exactly what I said. It is for your own benefit that you push this agenda. You don't do it for other people, you do it for you and yours and you scream selfish at people who think they should be allowed to work and earn money and see their families. You want them to happily give up these things so that you can have a hospital bed if you need it.

Got it.

Perfect28 · 22/01/2021 10:38

What do you mean no one gives a shit or tries to stop them? You're kidding right? We have various measures for road safety. These include laws on driving under the influence, lorry drivers driving without adequate breaks. We have refuse stops and signs on roads telling people that tiredness kills take a break. We have safety features in cars which engineers are continuously evaluating and we have a push for safer road systems including self driving cars eventually. But no, you're absolutely right, noone does anything about road safety.

Sheesh.

Spot on
TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2021 10:40

We could do an enormous amount more, but there’s absolutely no appetite to do so.

secretllama · 22/01/2021 10:41

Oh my days. 🤣

I am aware of this theory! Doesn't change what I meant in my post though.
Perfect28 · 22/01/2021 10:42

@Fembot123
So let me get this right. You can direct comments at me. Call me names. Tag me. But if I do the same to you, I'm attention seeking. Cool! Got it.

@LucilleTheVampireBat

The point is about viewing yourself and your family as part of a society where actions have consequences.
Funny that you're the one who posted the hierarchy of needs but clearly don't get why.

Wink

Thanks Nutella (the move from Spain to Sweden)

"For the lady who asked me (sorry forgot your username)"

It was me! Very interesting - so I guess for you wfh means really wfh - no occasional visits to an office!

and have EU passports. Ah.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/01/2021 10:43

'answered the OP, I not here to argue with the likes of you 😘'

This thread. It's like an episode of Jeremy Kyle. @Perfect28 has been pleasant throughtout, calmly repeating facts while others cackle and bring up utterly irrelevant facts like people die in road accidents.

If you don't follow the rules I hope a busybodying, curtain twitching 'stasi' person reports you and you get fined.

It's a public health crisis. Stop being selfish, parent your kids by teaching them coping strategies and use zoom like everyone else for social contact.

TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2021 10:43

If anyone can show me where Maslow stated that humans will be absolutely fine having just their functional needs met for months and indeed years at a time, please post it, ta!

By your logic, if avoiding death is the most important criteria, then we should ban cars altogether.

You want to avoid death - fine. Stay indoors, deny yourself human interaction and hopefully you won't die of loneliness. I would rather live, interact and take my chances.

I've said on other threads what I would suggest regarding the potential collapse of the NHS but that thread was deleted, and the fact this one is still standing, given the trigger-happy willingness to delete, that I'd rather this one didn't get pulled too. Happy to share my views by PM but doubt you'd agree with them.

Oh I see so we've gone from arguing no one tries to do anything to now arguing they could do alot more but there's no appetite for - (any evidence for that view? Nope didn't think so)

Now let's draw the same arguments parallel to the lockdown shall we.

Honeyhoops · 22/01/2021 10:45

@Perfect28

Just out of interest, do you live alone, or with children, in a small flat with no outside space? Or with an abusive partner, or have children with additional needs?

TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2021 10:46

Now let's draw the same arguments parallel to the lockdown shall we.

Sure. If we wanted to minimise death regardless of the cost to society and way of life, we’d ban cars entirely.

Hmm, no appetite for that is there?
