If the vaccines do not work and lockdown isn't working

What happens now?
Will this actually be my child's life? Nothing but walks outside the house? I feel emotional but is this truly it now?

The whole "lockdowns do/don't work" argument really reminds me of dieting.

Diets work when you're dieting, as if you're eating less calories, you will of course lose weight, but as soon as you start eating "normally", the weight goes back on....and then some. So is that classed as working?

It depends how you view it I suppose.

TheKeatingFive · 23/01/2021 10:34

That’s a good analogy malbecky

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/01/2021 10:43

@Malbecky spot on.

Another way of looking at it, using your analogy.

You diet very strictly and abruptly in order to achieve a specific thing ie fir your wedding dress.

You achieve that goal.

And then resort to eating like before and put on the weight. But no problem, because you have fit your wedding dress already.

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2021 10:52

And then resort to eating like before and put on the weight. But no problem, because you have fit your wedding dress already.

The problem with that is you consistently need to fit in your wedding dress. You’re having wedding photos every day.

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/01/2021 10:54

Let’s tweak the weight analogy to being a diabetic. You have to keep the weight off to stay alive and healthy.

MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 10:55

Losing weight as a nation would help actually

Joins it together..

But in reality. You don’t.

And like now... the reality is that the vaccine represents the end of the wedding when the bride can relax her diet.

But we don’t all need to lose weight!

I’m underweight. Losing weight for me would make no sense whatsoever.

MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 11:04

Sethy I laughed no not everyone Grin

But we are overweight as a country on the table which lists it. And hasn’t helped

Japan is low, maybe a factor

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2021 11:05

The lockdown “diet” isn’t going to continue until the vaccine is fully rolled out. We’re still going to have to follow social distancing and restrictions for months yet. It’s not a hard cut off like a wedding.

No it’s not a hard cut off

Just like the bride won’t immediately go back to pre diet eating and weight on day 1 either

Definitely a big factor according to ICU doctors.

ICU is mostly filled with people that have serious underlying health conditions or are obese. Very few that are fit and healthy.

Blessex · 23/01/2021 11:14

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum yes it’s the big unsaid

MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 11:16

We’re a year in a I doubt we’ve got thinner, maybe bigger due to stress

‘We’ meaning if you added us all up and got an average

It’s really hard to change but it’s one thing that lowers risk that people can take

Ken1976 · 23/01/2021 12:43

I had my first vaccine on Thursday. I already have my appointment for my second vaccine the first week in April. What gives people the impression that we won't be getting our second one?
I tend to be a glass half full person and believe it will all come out in the wash .

ballsdeep · 23/01/2021 12:46

@RosieLemonade

People on here said they are only 33 per cent effective and the papers are reporting infection rates aren't falling. I understand the lag for the death rates.
Op you only need to look at official data to see cases are dropping!

And take what people say on here with a pinch of salt.

I think some people are worried about supply of the vaccine. I have no idea whether those worries are founded or not.
amispeakingenglish · 23/01/2021 15:47

If we continue (some of us) to insist on meeting for Xmas, weddings or just because you want to see your family, friends etc, the virus will have hosts to continue to learn and to mutate again and again, perfecting its transmission rate. One thing I don't get though is that it won't kill everyone or even most people as not in the virus best interest, to kill host as virus would die if no hosts. Some will always be immune I suppose. However as a civilised society we can't carry on as normal allowing some people to die, and its not always the elderly (who deserve a great end of life and last 20-10 yrs etc) or those with other conditions and if you think about it, we are not supposed to discriminate anyway, and if we ignore this we will be against those who have underlying conditions, overweight, or elderly.

We have already overused antibiotics to the point where we are in danger of losing them, I hope the vaccine is safe and will work well, I would also like the gov spokes people to stop treating us like idiots (some hope) and explain exactly how the vaccine is made, the science of it so we can understand it properly and not have all this fake news and scaremongering. I am not a big fan of inoculations , 2 of my lot only had one MMR and I won't be getting a flu jab as never had flu, however I think this is different as we have a responsibility to the more vuneralabe.

amispeakingenglish · 23/01/2021 15:50

sorry about a bit of a lack of punctuation! Also I meant I don't get why the virus kills so many as needs us as hosts, more the better!! Perhaps a virologist our there could explain, is it an accident on the virus part?

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2021 15:52

Also I meant I don't get why the virus kills so many as needs us as hosts, more the better!!

It spreads very efficiently. It doesn’t have a particularly high death rate amongst the majority of people.

Hearwego · 23/01/2021 15:57

Patrick Vallance said yesterday that the virus will be around forever.
Whilst this may be the case, I doubt many people want to live a life of restrictions.
I’m sure there will come one a time when things would have to return to normal.
The ‘new normal ‘ isn’t sustainable long term for economic reasons let alone mankind itself.
I’ve heard people on tv say they don’t want to return to the old normal but a better one one.
I’m not quite sure what they mean by that , because any long term changes we have won’t be for the better. I think we’d be bloody lucky to go back to how things were pre covid.
There will be long term economic hardship and less job opportunities as industries close and shrink. There will be no going back for many businesses. Surely this is obvious to most people?
Selfish people will be even more selfish, a pandemic won’t change that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/01/2021 16:04

Worth remembering the next time someone mentions it also being full of younger people ... sadly, obesity and serious conditions aren't restricted to the very aged

lightand · 23/01/2021 16:19

good point sadly

Sunnysideup999 · 23/01/2021 16:44

This is how we live now.
Lockdowns help bring down cases - but do not work long term.
Vaccines are an unknown. We don’t know how effective they are or how long they work for .
