Merck announces vaccine development fail

(sorry, in german) the gist is that their vaccine in development failed the grade. far too low immunity response.

In regards to vaccination supply, someone on the BBC said recently that the reason they won't reveal any numbers about supply is basically national security- if other countries find out we are getting more/quicker supply than they are, they could put pressure on Pfizer and AZ to divert some of our intended supply to them. Even more so now EU countries are facing delays with theirs.
Yep. That is why Nicola Sturgeon got a slap on the wrist from Westminster recently for mentioning we have millions stored.

Best not boast about such things. Wish someone told Hancock that when he said we have now vaccinated more in three days than France has throughout. Dangerous political error to provoke other countries about vaccine. It could lead to them not playing nicely back.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 25/01/2021 15:56

@RadioPlatform

Good news about Israel but I’m still worried about Leicester! If the reason for their increasing rates is that they are doing more asymptomatic testing - so finding more cases. Is their a concern that in other places (especially in the north) cases are also going up but they are not being tested and reflected in the figures yet?
Someone on another thread seemed to think the prison had a lot to do with it. That and testing symptomless people.
wintertravel1980 · 25/01/2021 16:00

Best not boast about such things.

Fully agree. Very often the best strategy is to remain humble and just get on with things. Yes, it does look like we might have done a very good job with vaccine procurement. Unfortunately, we now need vaccines more than most other countries do - the new variant appeared here.

Nicola Sturgeon's "strive for transparency" and Hancock's self-congratulatory remarks are equally foolish.

Good point, I’m glad the vaccine is treated as such in many ways. No need to trumpet over security.

Only 22 195, lowest number since 16th December I think.
592 deaths, which is minorly lower than last Monday (599)

PuzzledObserver · 25/01/2021 16:11

I would be interested to see the number or % vaccinated within each priority group. Does anyone know if that is available anywhere?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 25/01/2021 16:12

Well looking at the ONs I am staying away from the school threads for a bit. Once that trickles down it will be carnage!

School staff still are very exposed to catching the virus and therefore transmitting it though. So we will have to get them done fairly quickly anyway.

Looks like priority list two needs to be any keyworkers that have high exposure. Then men in each age group first. We should have done all the care workers by then anyway.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:14

PHS have done a more thorough job on occupational risk especially re infection :

I think they announce this every Thursday. Hancock already said at the weekend we have jabbed 75% of 80+ year olds. Last Thursday I think it was 50% of care homes.
Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:16

The PHS survey found teachers were more likely to be infected but then less likely based on the infections to be hospitalised so , I guess, a healthy workforce. Those infections are a worry for transmission etc though. That is a very broad brush summary!

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:17

In other news my DF , 80 no spleen got his first jab today. Phoned at noon, jabbed at 3pm. Hoorah.

Hardbackwriter · 25/01/2021 16:20

@MRex

ONS updated report about deaths from coronavirus: "Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation, England and Wales - Office for National Statistics" www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/causesofdeath/bulletins/coronaviruscovid19relateddeathsbyoccupationenglandandwales/deathsregisteredbetween9marchand28december2020. Whether it will be used for next state vaccine distribution, or used to justify just going by age is unclear. It could be argued either way.
To me it seems to make the case for simply continuing to distribute by age once we get down below 50. The strongest case other than that would be for targeting more deprived groups, but that seems like a logistical nightmare (and would also be highly controversial). You could also make a pretty strong case for prioritising men but again, highly controversial.

Brilliant news, you must be pleased. Was he called at short notice as people failed to attend?

I'm always so pleased to see some good news posted.

wintertravel1980 · 25/01/2021 16:24

The PHS survey found teachers were more likely to be infected...

Or they may be more likely to get tested even if cases are mild (which is, of course, the absolutely right thing to do).

I am afraid some security guards, cleaners, manufacturing workers, etc (especially men) only test if their conditions are really serious.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:28

Yes, I think it also says that winter. The ONS should be a bit shamefaced at how detailed the PHS report is.. the gig economy is a dreadful thing.

Not sure why such short notice ancient! But , yes, it is a(half a) relief definitely as if he picks up any bug he ends up in hospital, even though he is fit as a fiddle normally. Astonishingly, splenectomies were accidentally missed off original CEV and CV lists!

tootyfruitypickle · 25/01/2021 16:31

@Hardbackwriter thanks that link is interesting.I agree, once health and care workers are done, it seems to lend itself to suggest carrying down the age bands.

Is it showing that 8,000 of the deaths have been under age 65? While I know we know this, it’s horrifying the numbers of elderly we are losing. It wouldn’t be any better if the deaths were spread out across ages, but for some reason that stark figure has really shocked me.

I don’t think you could prioritise by sex or income, not least as it would just pit people against eachother. A conservative govt would never make the wealthy last on the list either.

tootyfruitypickle · 25/01/2021 16:32

Sorry was @mrex link

tootyfruitypickle · 25/01/2021 16:34

Politically I think they will bring teachers to the front of phase 2. Esp if keeping schools open is a priority, it makes that easier . But after that I think it will be age order. Maybe police will be included with teachers given enforcement issues.

I think this is in line with many posts on here re risk? Am I reading it right but it’s much lower than healthcare.

Wonder what it will mean for vaccination priority.

Is it less healthy but more female and younger?
MarshaBradyo · 25/01/2021 16:42

Less about being healthy I mean.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:44

Does vaccinating really solve anything in school, though, or does it just look good politically? I want DH vaccinated asap as he has his heart condition but teachers, in general, are quite healthy (physically anyway) and younger than average compared to European teachers. I can't see how it solves issues of transmission and spread.

Really, CV and CEV teachers, police etc should be treated differently : they should be protected more than others doing their job and they aren't. (to be fair, I don't know this of police but do know it f schoolworkers)

Firefliess · 25/01/2021 16:45

The only reason I can see to prioritise teachers is because we are not planning (currently) to vaccinate children at all, so will need to do everything else we possibly can to reduce transmission in schools.

The data shows quite clearly that - despite the noise we hear about it - they are at lower risk of both catching Covid and dying of it than many other occupational groups - restaurant staff, factory workers, taxi drivers all much higher (and not already getting vaccinated as the nurses, social workers and care workers are)

But as we work down the age groups, most occupations will start to be much safer, because increasing numbers of the people they mix with (general public or colleagues) will be vaccinated. That won't be the case for teachers until they licence a vaccine for children and get down the list to giving it to them.
