Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

I had AZ vaccine on Monday lunchtime. I'm 40, work in social care. No health problems usually. It has helped me to see other people's reactions on this thread

I woke up early Tuesday in the night - felt sick, slight fever, achy etc. Had to take yesterday off work, I really wasn't up to much. Nausea, achy, really tired, struggle to get out of bed. I'd have struggled to do nursery drop off if my husband wasn't around. So- having paracetamol, easy food ready to go, the ability to take a day off, and some help, made a tricky day much easier. No fake news agenda whatsoever here. I'll be more prepared next time.

This am I felt pretty tired, now I feel back to normal. Couple days discomfort absolutely worth it and feel very fortunate to have had the vaccine. Anecdotally, the people I know that have had the vaccine have usually felt a bit unwell (varied degrees) the day after. Then fine after 48 hours.

@Thedarksideofthemoon30

Has anyone had a cough as a side affect?
A mild one, yes. Not continuous.
Mumisnotmyonlyname · 10/02/2021 18:01

As someone who had had the flu vaccine annually, the pneumonia vaccine and also now the Covid19 one, all vaccines have minor initial reactions in up to half. It's still worth vaccinating and it's no big deal. The alternative is always worse, for oneself and others.

HavelockVetinari · 10/02/2021 18:03

My parents and aunt had their AZ vaccines this week - very mild side effects, just feeling a bit tired. Same with most people they know, so I don't think it's a huge widespread issue.

LeSquigh · 10/02/2021 18:11

@Worknoplay For what it’s worth I am absolutely not making it up, and you will see that lots of other people have echoed what I have said. Are we all lying?

I was a bit tired on Tuesday and now on Wednesday I think I might be getting a urine infection. Just had an hour in bed and really could take a day off, but can't. I'm also due on and have pmt and stress at work and I'm sure none of that helps. I'm honestly not worried though and I know will be fine. I am on immuno suppressants.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/02/2021 22:24

Surely feeling crap for a few days is better than Covid?

We all give our babies vaccines accepting it might make them feel under the weather, surely we can cope if our babies can! I don’t see the big deal.

SavageBeauty73 · 10/02/2021 22:27

I had the AZ vaccine on Monday. I woke up on Tuesday feeling dreadful. Boiling hot, achy. I had a sofa day (lucky kids are teens). Felt ropy this morning and now I feel fine albeit knackered and in bed.

LeSquigh · 10/02/2021 22:57

@RedcurrantPuff Yes of course and we should all have the vaccination if we can, the original point was that the side effects have been a lot worse than expected for many people I know and this has taken us by surprise. I have had COVID, and had it been a normal illness without rules I didn’t feel bad enough that I would have stayed off work, and this is the same for a number of people I know who have had it, however many people I do know have been a LOT more ill after the vaccine than many have with COVID itself. I’ve had both, my COVID was so mild that I only realised I had had it when I lost of sense of taste and smell and then realised that yes I had had a mild cold but no cough or fever in the days before and I had fairly mild side effects from the vaccine. I have been very lucky with both.

It’s not that people are bothered about having the side effects and it’s all for the greater good obviously, but the strength of them in some cases is quite surprising with people in their 20s to 40s (mainly) saying that they have never felt so bad with anything as they have following the AZ vaccine.

Vaccine Monday. Within 8 hours was feverish, cold, shivering with head and body pains. Woke on Tuesday the same but by the evening was much better. Have been easily tired since and have a permanent headache that I'm taking pain killers for.

I'm awake now because the headache has woken me and I can't get back to sleep. Anyone have similar?

OpheliasCrayon · 11/02/2021 05:14

Why is it surprising OP? I'm really not sure what your issue is?
When DD1 had her rota virus vaccine she was SO unwell, the poor girl as screaming literally screaming with tummy pain for a week, she had fever, we were up with her for 5 days straight because she was too upset to sleep. And then it happened again with the second dose. Same with Men B vaccine, temp of 40 and howled for days.
DD2... You wouldn't have even known she'd had any vaccines she was right as rain.

Your point is not a point at all , people get different reactions to things, some strong some not. I can't have the vaccine because I react so strongly to so many things I end up in hospital with severe reactions - most other people don't. It's just each person.
I don't know why you're so surprised by any of this.

Ceara · 11/02/2021 05:21

My DM (late 70s) had hers on Tuesday. Slightly sore arm that evening but otherwise OK. Wednesday she was flattened for 12 hours - extremely fatigued (couldn't get out of bed), chills, brain fog, a sense of heaviness throughout her body, aching joints, nausea, no appetite. Starting to feel better - with enough appetite to eat some soup - by the evening.

She is taking yesterday's unpleasantness as a pleasing sign of a functioning immune system :-)

Athinginitself · 11/02/2021 05:45

I personally think its helpful to be aware of how common side effects are. They seem to invariably last for a few hours-couple of days so not unmanageable for most people surely but helpful to be able to plan re work etc.
I had Pfizer and had really bad fatigue, heaviness and feeling spaced out but it lasted 24 hrs (but I do have other health issues and am not v well anyway at the moment) Everyone else I know who has had Pfizer has been totally fine..no side effects other than the standard sorr arm. The people I know who have had AZ have generally felt fluey and wiped out for 24 hrs but quickly recovered too.
Having had covid nearly a year ago which was one if the worst experiences of my life and still not being recovered I'd take the vaccine over that any day.

Morph2lcfc · 11/02/2021 05:47

I had the az vaccine yesterday, I was so tired last night had to go to bed at 8. This morning I feel a bit like I’m hung over even though I’ve not had a drink

Precisely.

Gaslighting :(

FluffySocks75 · 11/02/2021 18:18

@LeSquigh thanks for this thread I've searched for it after having vaccine and developing side effects since. This thread has reassured me is common.

I'm CEV been shielding carefully. In 30s.

Had AZ. ABSOLUTELY delighted to have it. So happy. Everyone get it. No scaremongering here I'm pro vaccine.

But have had shivering. No temp. Really strange headache type I've never had before. Arm sore and also v nauseous and seasicky feeling.

V v happy to have had it though. I know people who have been ventilated and a relative died. So absolutely no negativity here about it.

VaccsyPoxsy · 11/02/2021 19:55

Is shivering with no fever common side effect? If I have the vaccine and I had a light fever with chills/shivering I would understand- but no fever and shivering does concern me? I’m one of the anxious ones

Disclaimer- not an anti vaxxer- thankful for the scientists (better to put this in before the ‘how dare you question the COVID vaccine!!’ brigade descend

FluffySocks75 · 11/02/2021 20:40

@vaccsypoxsy I just checked my temp again there and has actually gone up. But my shivering has stopped now.

Seems within the realms of what the official list is

Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects
VaccsyPoxsy · 11/02/2021 20:43

@FluffySocks75 thank you for the update. Hope you feel better soon

Morph2lcfc · 11/02/2021 20:48

I had yesterday and I’ve been shivering and not able to get warm. I thought it was because it was just cold but my ds is sat here in short sleeves and said it’s not cold

Worknoplay · 12/02/2021 12:00

It is not gaslighting, at all.

I hope you are not accusing people who don't have any side effects of lying.

Hibernatingnation · 12/02/2021 12:04

My CEV mum in her 70's had it a few days ago, no side effects at all. I would say it's more usual than not to have some side effects from vaccines though. I was rough after my flu vacc last year but it was the first time I'd had any side effects and I've been having it for years, it was certainly nowhere near as bad as actual flu which had me hospitalised a few years back.

TheLaughingGenome · 12/02/2021 12:56

Well I'm excited to say after 3 days I finally have a mild side-effect! Yay!

I'm excited because I'm immune suppressed and I am keen to see signs that my remaining immune system has, in fact, been stimulated.

So ... a bit tired, flushed face, a bit achey. Excellent. And nothing an extra paracetamol won't help with. Smile

MadisonAvenue · 12/02/2021 13:11

@Worknoplay

It is not gaslighting, at all.

I hope you are not accusing people who don't have any side effects of lying.

Has anyone said or implied that?? I don’t think so.

It’s easy to understand that some will have side effects, of varying degrees, while others have nothing at all.

lostpasswordagain · 12/02/2021 13:28

Had mine first thing yesterday. Fine all day but by 7/8pm could barely stay away and had the shivers. Was so cold that I just couldn't get warm at all and that is the opposite to my usual state. Much to the amusement of the rest of the family! Had a pretty rubbish night of sleep but have woken up with a sore arm and a vague feeling of being hungover or end of a cold. Normal body temperature and not yawning every 2 minutes.
I have previously had covid and I am under 50, so it seems was more likely to get side effects.
All I had was listed in the leaflet and has gone pretty quickly. Just glad I had it!
