Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

Much much better to have a few side effects for 24 hours than the acute misery and possible death of catching the real thing.

Take some painkillers and rest up, it will pass.

Many inoculations can cause similar. I would feel it had actually worked if I had the side effects. I am very much looking forward to my vaccine, and can not wait for the day when I don't need to worry about this virus anymore!!!!!

Giningit · 19/01/2021 07:21

Whilst I don’t have any qualms about having the jab, I do think people need to be made much more aware of the side effects so that they can plan for and manage them. Downplaying doesn’t help. Hopefully it will also limit conspiracy theories out there about the vaccines.

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 07:22

@CuriousaboutSamphire I’m not spreading “alarmist crap”? I’m stating facts about what my colleagues have experienced and are currently experiencing!

I also do understand that these are all listed as side effects, we are just surprised at how severe they are. It’s not ill informed or anecdotal at all, it’s completely true and factual and if you choose not to believe it that’s really up to you.

I have to wait another couple of weeks to have it done as I had COVID just before Christmas.

This is just a post of genuine surprise at how severe the effects have been for some people. Whenever we have vaccines or medications we get told about the side effects but few generally experience them so it’s a surprise that so many have in this case.

@Moondust001

All of this is within reported parameters, and the Vaccine Knowledge Group monitoring side effects have also noted that younger people or those who have had the disease are more likely to experience side effects.

I'm surprised that somebody working in emergency services thinks that "the right to know" consists of posting alarmist and ill-informed anecdotal information on a public website which may cause people fear of the vaccines (all have reported similar side effects), rather than using the many formal and more useful routes for reporting any "concerns".

This ^

How incredibly irresponsible, you should be ashamed.

happinessischocolate · 19/01/2021 07:24

*It's literally in the leaflet they give you. Did anyone read it.

It lists all those side effects and also tells you to get a covid test because it might not be side effects, it might be covid. And also it tells you to report severe side effects and how.

Just read the leaflet!*

But surely you get the leaflet when you have the vaccine, so it's a bit late then, it's good to know about all the side effects before you even get an appointment

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 07:24

Also, I am very much for having the vaccine, I am not trying to scare anyone off. I’m glad I know because I can then arrange it on a day where I won’t have childcare issues in the days after in case I am unwell. It’s better to be prepared.

I wasn’t aware of the yellow card scheme, but they may be because of the paperwork they have been given, I’ll check.

If you've been vaccinated you're a medic, or work in health or care in some capacity. I'm surprised you haven't heard of the yellow card scheme.

Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2021 07:24

so it’s a surprise that so many have in this case.

That’s the bit I dont understand. For everyone to be bedridden...

hatgirl · 19/01/2021 07:26

I had the AZ vaccine yesterday.

My arm is a little stiff but no worse than when I've had flu/whooping cough jabs in the past.

They were turning anyone away that had had a positive covid test in the last 6 weeks (i think, it might have been 4) because apparently you are more likely to have more severe side affects if you've recently had Covid.

Its sounds highly likely that your colleagues have possibly all had covid mildly recently without realising which is why they are experiencing stronger side affects after the vaccine.

My whole team (social workers) have had it and everyone's been fine.

BigButtons · 19/01/2021 07:28

My partner is NHS. Many of his colleagues have had these recently and quite a few have been off work for a few days following with flu-like symptoms enough to keep them in bed. They are fine after a while though.

AnyFucker · 19/01/2021 07:28

I think you might have a rather high proportion of swingers of the lead in your place, op

meditrina · 19/01/2021 07:28

It's readily Googled.

But I think a lot of people do not read the pack insert info leaflets, or even take them away with them in case they need them later. So getting them to Google is probably a lost cause. Those who want to know in advance will easily find the info.

Though of course for as long as the side effects are way shorter and less serious than having the disease itself, the fact that side effects really can happen isn't that likely to change people's mind about getting the jab.

4amWitchingHour · 19/01/2021 07:30

Lol at the men being affected worse. Actually affected worse, or do they just have the dressing gown of doom on? *

*yes yes yes, not all men etc etc

itsgettingweird · 19/01/2021 07:30

My son has same effect from flu vaccine. It doesn't affect me being a slight sore throat for a day.

It floors him 48-72 hours after it's done for 24 hours and it takes him a full week to recover properly.

Vaccines always have side effects.

BigButtons · 19/01/2021 07:32

@CuriousaboutSamphire

That's all in the vaccine leaflet, easily available on line. And not really a surprising side effect of any vaccine... the yearly flu one included!

As someone in the emergency services I think you should a) be far better informed than you seem to be and b) not spreading such alarmist crap!

Shame OP!

How is this 'alarmist crap'? It's a new vaccine and it's having side effects. I will still get it- though I am way down the list- but I would like to know what I might expect and be able to inform work that I could be off for a couple of days because of it.
LazyFace · 19/01/2021 07:35

These are all normal side effects.
I've had mine yesterday evening, no side effects so far.

I think PPs might be right about the ones affected badly having had Covid recently, I've been getting regular tests at work and all was neg.

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 07:38

@SaskiaRembrandt I don’t work in healthcare

OP posts:
LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 07:39

@AnyFucker maybe a few, but the vast majority of my colleagues are conscientious people who are rarely ever sick, dragging themselves in when they are normally kind of people. We are short staffed too and this really isn’t the normal behaviour in my workplace AT ALL.

Totally agree with this.
Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2021 07:42

I think there's a middle ground between being alarmist and downplaying TBH.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 07:44

Had it yesterday. Slightly sore arm, that's it. Just done an online HIIT class.

whippettiger · 19/01/2021 07:47

Surprised someone who works in emergency services doesn’t know about the yellow card scheme?! And would post alarmist stuff like this which will help add to uncertainty about taking the vaccine. Especially given I’m sure you’ve seen first hand the effects of Covid on patients, emergency services and the NHS Hmm

borntobequiet · 19/01/2021 07:47

I know a number people who have had one or the other vaccine and the most they have reported is a sore arm and felt a bit tired. The side effects have been widely reported.
The OP is alarmist, irresponsible and possibly ill-intentioned.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 19/01/2021 07:48

Seriously, this could be really off putting to people who haven't had the vaccine.

rorosemary · 19/01/2021 07:49

It's not exactly a secret, is it? I'm in a different country where we don't have the AZ vaccin yet and I already heard that a lot of people get side effects and that they can make you feel quite bad for a short while. Ah well, still cab't wait till I get mine
