I was thinking last night, if this uncertain data had suggested the opposite and they thought it could be less deadly, would they have said anything at this point...? Hmmm 🤔

It’s always darkest before the dawn.... Let’s just hope this is the last big scare before things really start to improve.

Not even that big a scare. A statistically tiny risk may be statistically slightly less tiny - and they're not even certain about that. They are definitely publicising this for strategic reasons.
TeaInTheGarden · 23/01/2021 14:03

Zoe stats still going down ☺️

TeaInTheGarden · 23/01/2021 14:08

It really feels like they deliberately take us up and down to try and control public mood. But I can understand the fear that people will become complacent.
I mean, in a few weeks there will be millions of people immune (if not already) and like it or not people will start to modify their behaviour. Most (not all) people are following rules to protest themselves and others (not to protect the NHS!) so once those individual risks become tiny they are going to have to start a new narrative. So for now, increase the personal risk.
(I’m not saying this new data isn’t true, and I am far far from a conspiracy theorist, but I do think the announcement is strategic)

TeaInTheGarden · 23/01/2021 14:10

It’s similar to when the announce “cases in this area have doubled in the last week” when this sometimes mean they’ve gone from 2 cases to 4! (Doubled is still true, but not as scary as it sounds in that case)

You know what they say- lies, damn lies and statistics.

alreadytaken · 23/01/2021 14:12

My news is a 77 year relative in an area noted for being slow booked in for next week. Actually my least favourite older relative but cant have everything.

And I've spent a fun few minutes discovering rubber bricks e.g. www.networldsports.co.uk/swim-diving-bricks.html

and foam ones, might be better in our house www.sensorytoywarehouse.com/product/single-foam-building-brick-life-size-construction-blocks-for-realistic-play/

with this one even labelled as a stress brick. www.aspectmerchandise.co.uk/product/stress-brick/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgs-C1Jiy7gIVCp7tCh3n0Q1MEAQYAiABEgJ6ZPD_BwE

Apologies if already posted but - Moderna has started looking into a vaccine for HIV because the new technology is working so well. We may also get better flu vaccines in future. www.newsweek.com/research-covid-19-vaccination-technology-could-lead-hiv-cancer-vaccines-1563875

And instead of being doom muppets perhaps a few more people could emulate this man edition.cnn.com/2021/01/17/us/uk-plumber-helps-families-during-pandemic-trnd/index.html ( as a change from cute animals)

OrangeBananaFish · 23/01/2021 14:12

I had half a thought that it was brought up as it was Friday night. They are trying to stop people doing silly things over the weekend.

TheChineseChicken · 23/01/2021 14:21

The problem with making announcements about ‘scientific’ data like this is that it increases people’s scepticism and makes them feel that they are being misled. Which in turn has an impact on actual important information when that really needs to be communicated. It may lead some people to think that everything the government and scientists tell them is bollocks.

I suspect figures will drop slightly over the next couple of days (if they follow the pattern of last weekend where there were less doses at weekend) but this is fantastic

InterfectoremVulpes · 23/01/2021 14:22

They wouldn't need to scare people into being compliant if they actually had a plan and told us the rough details. E.g. we are planning to have vulnerable people and nhs workers vaccinated by end Feb, after that we will concentrate on public facing workers such as teachers with a view to be able to open schools after Easter.

(Not saying that should be the plan, but I would like to see teachers done in time to allow schools to open if at all possible!)

Pressed post too soon... for a lot of people its the uncertainty that's causing a lot of stress and anxiety. Obvious there would be caveats in place to say that dates can't be set in stone and may need to be pushed back slightly but having some idea of when we can start to resume a more normal life would make "lockdown" easier to endure

That’s amazing news on the number of vaccines.

I can understand why they don't do that though. Boris over promised in the past and now seems to have swung in the opposite direction. Even if he were to add lots of caveats, you could picture the headlines ''Boris says all schools open in March!" and were it not to happen, he'd have to deal with all the ''But you said...'' Best to be a bit more vague and cautious, because at the end of the day they don't really know much more than any of us how the next few months might shape up.

Certainly is
MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 14:26

I agree no matter how many caveats people hold on to a date

They've already published the plan for the vaccine roll out.
FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 14:27

Zoe app is showing Cornwall cases heading downwards apace. Graph looks like a log flume now!

scotlandg · 23/01/2021 14:30

Thank you for all of this. I love this thread Star

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 14:30

They're only aiming to vaccinate the most vulnerable by 15th Feb. After that there's a very large group of people over 65, the CV folk aged 18-64, over 60, over 50. They consider all these groups at risk, although declining through the age groups. That's going to take some time, especially with second doses needed for the first groups.

After that, I think they may be considering people facing occupational groups.

At least, that's my understanding.

InterfectoremVulpes · 23/01/2021 14:31

True, true re releasing a plan, but its so frustrating when you don't have any answers for your child when they are upset about not seeing their friends 😔

Israel is at 38.8% Shock- they'd be running out of willing patients in France.

Terrific it is increasing so quickly 🥳

I just keep hearing about more and more new vaccination hubs opening too❤

Am loving that people are researching rubber/foam bricks, my Nan would be proud 😂

I’ve got a bit of a cheeky query for whoever starts the next thread - as I know it will involve a bit of work. As I’ve said, I’ve dipped in and out of these threads over time - so have likely missed a few useful links. Would it be possible, in the opening post of the next thread, to have a few links to some of the useful websites (such as Covid messenger, vaccine status/progress etc), so that people can easily access useful info?
