Can someone explain to me why the rest of MN seems to have forgotten that we have a vaccine? People are talking as though it doesn’t exist and that life will be this way forever! Am I missing something?

Because the same people who until November were saying 'They will never produce a vaccine for this. Sorry' have now started saying 'You do realise that the vaccine doesn't prevent transmission?' and 'The vaccine may not be effective against the new variants' instead.

@Level75

I found it reassuring to check my personal risk of dying from covid 19 here: qcovid.org/Calculation

I know this sounds a bit morbid but when the result is 1 in 100,000 it puts things in perspective. I'm mid 40s with no (other) risk factors.

My message would be that although we may read about all the deaths, for the vast majority the risk is really VERY small.

DH has a 1 in 1695 chance of dying according to that calculator :(
Pomegranatespompom · 23/01/2021 11:18

Would thinking 0.05 % ( I think!) be a bit more reassuring? I always think stats written as 1 in 1000 sound worse than they are - DH changed my thinking when I was pregnant and we had our genetic risk results.
Hope that’s not patronising, I just thought I’d mention as it helped me.

MarcelineMissouri · 23/01/2021 11:19

Sorry Blerg I thought you were looking for the data from Israel for some reason!

Not at all patronising. I am not good at stats and do not have a science degree, and to be honest, I often find a lot of the discourse hard to understand. It does help, thank you!

Good news from my local vaccine hub, the first day they opened they accidentally got delivered an extra box of vaccine and organised an extra 1170 people to come in in less than 24 hours so as not to waste a single drop!

TheChineseChicken · 23/01/2021 11:39

Just catching up. Thanks for all the sensible posts. I started this morning in a real funk (weekend mornings are always painful with two small children!) but have cheered up!

fadingfast · 23/01/2021 11:40

Just spotted this new Canadian drug trial reported on Twitter. Sounds v promising!

OrangeBananaFish · 23/01/2021 11:44

I border 2 counties and have seen on FB that various places in both of them are getting lists of people sorted who are able to drop everything to get a vaccine at a moment's notice to get any spare vaccines. Hopefully it's a nation wide strategy.

Wow that’s remarkably efficient! When I find myself feeling furious with the government it really helps to see how many good people are involved in this massive collective effort.
Pomegranatespompom · 23/01/2021 11:56

@Frequentflier I’m glad it helped. I find it hard to get my head around figures too.
We just have to keep going a bit longer - brighter times ahead

That’s very impressive. There are some splendid and vital efforts from people doing boring traditional undervalued admin jobs right now.

Was last night’s briefing strategic do we think? Or a cock-up?

The former, no doubt. Someone on another thread said that the study was 3 weeks old, so why make it public now? They're definitely trying to scare people out of complacency, and looking at the headlines and some of the posts here on MN, they've had some success at least in the short term.
2fallsagain · 23/01/2021 13:31

@Frequentflier that's still a 1 in 1650 odd chance of NOT dying. Thanks

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/01/2021 13:31

God I love scientists. It’s the way they are actually able to deal with nuance and uncertainty.

3 weeks old! Yes I had thought it was strategic and yes has worked a bit

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/01/2021 13:33

As long as the people being scared are the same ones who were being complacent...

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 23/01/2021 13:34

It is worse than we thought the Daily Mail is now using Scaremongers to describe the briefing

We will probably have to stop using that now or risk sounding like the Daily Mail. Even though they pinch stuff from mumsnet 🤦‍♀️

Any alternative suggestions?

MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 13:34

It’s also hard to stop people who don’t need to be so scared from getting scared and impacting in other ways

tobee · 23/01/2021 13:37

Yes I took the same from it as you @Blerg. I was asking coz I read it in the middle of the night and was wondering if I'd understood properly!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 23/01/2021 13:47

As the numbers are improving it was definitely a move to keep people compliant a bit longer. The seed of doubt was being sow for the schools opening after half term too. The earliest would be some time in March. If parents think there is more danger less will argue this.

The big push to convince the black and Asian population to have the vaccine is now on too. Also the younger we go down in age the less people will take up the vaccine. Thinking they are not at risk. Therefore a scare story or two will help with this.

2fallsagain · 23/01/2021 13:50

I think there is definitely a strategy of keeping fear levels up to ensure people comply with the restrictions.

Good vaccine news here. My dad (76 and CEV) had it last week, slotted in last minute as to not waste the vaccine. They had some left over and so invited people from the CEV list. Mum is due hers today. 75 and not CEV. This is in Oxfordshire.
