Help me, I just clicked on some bad threads

FourTeaFallOut · 20/01/2021 10:06

Just remember all those thousands of threads from not so long ago that detailed all the reasons why we'd never get a vaccine this side of 2022, they'd never get approval, they'd never work and here we are at the biggest vaccine roll out the country has ever known, January 2021.

You'll never convince someone that they might be letting their fears run amok. Just let it go.

JemimaPyjamas · 20/01/2021 10:18

Wow, 13 pages in already!

I am marking my place. I have to have a tooth extracted this afternoon so I am trying to keep myself positive. I hope this thread will help!

Off now to the start to catch up...

Thanks. I need to get more disciplined at not reading things but it’s like picking a scab

I’m exactly the same with Twitter @TheChineseChicken can’t help myself but I know no good will come of it......

I wish I could 'like' this post. This is so true.

@TheChineseChicken I get in cycles like that, and when I do I know it's a sign my mental health is going awry again. I try and remember that if it's not helpful, stop. I know it's v hard.
For some people being negative and pessimistic is what helps them get through. That's what going on. If it's not helpful to you (and me), walk away. Hope that's helpful and not patronising, having it pointed out to me really helped me.

TheChineseChicken · 20/01/2021 10:39

You’re absolutely right @AlexandraEiffel. Few other things going on in my life right now that aren’t how I envisaged them due to covid so I’m feeling pretty disappointed. Guess that’s why I’m seeking out bad news.

Anyway, this is a good news thread so I shall stop with the mithering and cheer up!

STEP AWAY FROM THE DOOM!
There, does that help?

Jemima hope the tooth extraction goes ok. Positive spin, in Lockdown 1, there were no dentists to be had for love nor money. You're the third person I know of this week who's has a tooth removed. Good luck.

Do you want some good news?

chri55ie · 20/01/2021 10:47

Pfizer vaccine confirmed to be effective against U.K. strain....I guess we were all hoping that but nice to have it confirmed.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 20/01/2021 11:29

Oh I don't know why that feels like such an anti-climax! I sort of just assumed it was effective against it really, not sure why now.

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2021 11:29

I think it’s the SA and Brazil one that I’m needing to hear about

scotlandg · 20/01/2021 11:45

Also some places starting to do longer hours for jabs - Birmingham and Nottinghamshire trusts offer 24-hour Covid vaccines www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-55726815

FourTeaFallOut · 20/01/2021 12:16

It'll be interesting to see how that goes. I know some people seemed highly sceptical about the use value in a 24/7 vaccine hub concerned that people won't book a night time slot or they won't turn up on time. It's one of those things that just has to be tried to find out.

@AlexandraEiffel

I found this a really useful article for understanding better the science behind schools. For me positive because understanding the balanced scientific opinion rather than media spins is much better for understanding what is going on. And lots of bits of positivity for what might happen and is realistic [[https://schoolsweek.co.uk/covid-19-nine-things-we-learned-from-scientists-at-education-committee/?mc]]cid=f0ed556937&mcceid=dc06f247e6&fbclid=IwAR22hu8uocQ6wmqgMP3qmaovQ-gReHFT3ZckOKqNQfBMN5qlDbGgtR3UMk
Thanks from me too. This has cheered me up today.

Also hello everyone. Remember, the roaring twenties are just around the corner...
Another new development to treat patients news.sky.com/story/covid-19-new-uk-designed-ventilator-could-mean-fewer-patients-need-intensive-care-12193097
The iron lung!

When I was young I had a family member who had had polio and I was intrigued by iron lungs. Apparently there was a whole ward in South London where people went every night to sleep in their iron lungs but could breath OK during the day when they were awake.

And I've been wondering why no one was looking into them for Covid patients who needed some breathing support but not full invasive ventilation.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/01/2021 13:48

I remember being terrified of iron lungs as a child. I just couldn't imagine being confined in a metal box (for life, I thought). There was at least one child in every school who wore calipers due to polio. And this was around 10 years after the vaccine was developed.

But if it works for covid patients they a big hurrah! And it seems much less invasive than intubation.

Thank you so much for this. It seems to talk sense without the media spin and so called insider knowledge.
Glenorma · 20/01/2021 14:12

I know some people seemed highly sceptical about the use value in a 24/7 vaccine hub concerned that people won't book a night time slot
We’ll have to wait and see. I actually think people will book night time slots if it’s advertised as getting vaccinations done quicker and getting back to normal sooner. I certainly would.

Frazzled2207 · 20/01/2021 14:15

@Glenorma
So would I. But afaik vaccination centres are mostly staffed with volunteers and even those who are paid have volunteered
to do it. I just can’t see lots of people volunteering to do it at nighttime unless they were paid lots extra which seems unlikely. Think hcps have had a difficult enough few months and shouldn’t be told to do nights unless willing.
