Who's had vaccine yet and who's had side effects?

I'm in northern Ireland and I know around 6 people who've been entitled to the vaccine, 5 of them had the original one and 1 had the Oxford one. Every single person has had side effects, ranging from as little as stiff, extremely painful arm (needing painkillers) to as bad as vomiting, severe headache, 39 degree temperatures, exhaustion etc.

Why are the side effects more common than other vaccines? Most other vaccines it's like 1 in 10 will get these side effects, 1 in 50 will get these etc but I just found it strange that absolutely all recipients that I know had a side effect of some sort so far.

My mum had it this week and no side effects at all, just an aching arm for a day.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2021 08:36

Mild headache for a couple of days and an achey arm. But the microchip won't stop beeping and my phone has 5G. Grin

AnImposter · 16/01/2021 08:37

Not a single side effect not even an achey arm Grin

mummyoneboy19 · 16/01/2021 08:37

I had a slightly aching arm for a day or so (same as with any jab) and felt absolutely fine.

redfernsydney · 16/01/2021 08:38

My mum.,sore arm for couple of days.

Ginfilledcats · 16/01/2021 08:40

I had Pfizer at lunchtime yesterday, about 3 hours after developed arm pain (still present) annoying but tolerable

Nogodsnomasters · 16/01/2021 08:45

Obviously each person will react differently but I just found it strange that every single person had a side effect whereas with most other vaccines it's a less frequent rate. The NHS website lists sore/stiff arm as a side effect so even having that counts as having a reaction albeit a milder one.

Only one out of the 6 I know had vomiting but the headache, fever and tiredness were experienced by 4 out of 6. The other 2 just had sore arm.

I had the pfzier one, very sore arm for about 24 hrs but nothing else.

Happyface120 · 16/01/2021 08:48

Sore arm the first day (same as every year with the flu jab), nothing else at all. My entire department (about 25 of us) all had the Pfizer vaccination last week, 2 had headaches and felt a bit off, everyone else fine.

shivermetimbers77 · 16/01/2021 08:49

Sore arm and a bit tired the next day and then fine: same reaction I get to the flu vaccine.

PinkDaffodil2 · 16/01/2021 08:50

Sore arm but not too bad, similar to other jabs. Anecdotally people who have had covid infection seem to have more severe side effects, which is to be expected I guess and with Pfizer more side effects for second dose.
Some jabs have a lot more common side effects, such as meningitis B giving fever in kids, or the delayed rash with MMR

Felty · 16/01/2021 08:52

I’ve had both Pfizers and only had a slightly sore arm for 24 hours afterwards.

Oh and I bought lots of sale Christmas decorations but that might not be related to the vaccine. Hard to tell.

Lucked · 16/01/2021 08:52

Mildly achy and heavy feeling arm the next day. Nothing else. I work in a hospital and know loads who had had it - lots of achey arms and a very few people feeling a bit flu like in the evening. I heard one of the theatre staff had to have a couple of days off but I heard that about 5th hand so who knows.

ZigZagInToTheBeach · 16/01/2021 08:54

I had the Pfizer vaccine and experienced an aching arm. If that counts as a side effect then I also get a side effect with my annual flu vaccination.

Also, a temperature of 39C warrants a Covid swab and self isolation. Don't assume a high temperature is a side effect of the vaccine, especially when it's that high.

trulydelicious · 16/01/2021 08:54

Side effects can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme

Why are the side effects more common than other vaccines

The Pfizer vaccine uses different technology than traditional vaccines, so maybe different side effects are to be expected?

Bumpsadaisie · 16/01/2021 08:55

DH felt a bit tired and achey for 24 hrs but fine after.

RuthW · 16/01/2021 08:57

Yes side effects are worse than any other jab especially after the second.

Personally I got off lightly compared with others at work.

I felt off for three days and five days later I still can't lie on my arm and have a lump about 5cm. I have taken paracetamol every day.

Then you get my mum...... sore arm for a few hours only.

Hobbes8 · 16/01/2021 08:58

I had a sore arm, like I do for flu, for about a day. I work in the NHS so lots of colleagues have had the first dose and none had severe side effects at all.

bravefox · 16/01/2021 08:58

Interested to hear what others think, I think it's pretty dangerous to start labelling absolutely anything that you feel on the days after a vaccination as a 'side effect' tbh. To lots of people the term implies there's something wrong with the vaccine. It plays into the hands of COVID denies and 5G crazies. Somebody is poking you on the arm with a piece of metal and pushing fluid in - it's hardly surprising you can feel bruised a few days later!

We have two small kids so have been through rounds and rounds of vaccinations. For lots of them the doctor literally says 'they will probably have a fever for a few days after' - we all get this is part of being vaccinated and not a cause for alarm.

Hobbes8 · 16/01/2021 08:59

Cross posted with @RuthW

Perhaps the side effects will be worse after the second dose then. We had to cancel all of ours (don’t get me started on that decision!)

FippertyGibbett · 16/01/2021 09:00

I know 3 people who have had the Pfizer. Two had nothing at all, one had a bit of a temp, but it is cold/flu season so could be coincidence.

incognitomum · 16/01/2021 09:00

Your thread title is likely to make this a biased sample who did have side effects.

Sore arms (which is what most are reporting) after intramuscular injections are very common.

abersinas · 16/01/2021 09:03

Had Pfizer vaccine, slightly sore arm for few days. Have been having the flu jab for 20 years and can honestly say this was no different!
