Who's had vaccine yet and who's had side effects?

I'm in northern Ireland and I know around 6 people who've been entitled to the vaccine, 5 of them had the original one and 1 had the Oxford one. Every single person has had side effects, ranging from as little as stiff, extremely painful arm (needing painkillers) to as bad as vomiting, severe headache, 39 degree temperatures, exhaustion etc.

Why are the side effects more common than other vaccines? Most other vaccines it's like 1 in 10 will get these side effects, 1 in 50 will get these etc but I just found it strange that absolutely all recipients that I know had a side effect of some sort so far.

Young healthy NHS workers used to decline the flu jab as a lot of people got side effects and they wanted to risk flu rather than have a sore arm/feel crap for a few days. That has now changed.

With how shit covid is, it isn’t flu, it affects the body massively and long covid will be a huge thing in the future for our generation. So the vaccine needs to make the body work to make antibodies ready to fight, this makes you feel ill. No vaccine is going to magic this with no side effects, covid is vicious and needs a hardcore vaccine.

Also, most people who’ve had covid and then get the vaccine get a more marked reaction to the vaccine. There will be people who weren’t tested the first time around (when our government had a few weeks of saying “if you think you’ve got covid don’t tell us or your doctor”) who react when they get the vaccine.

Get it. Long covid is shit. Death is worse. If 20% of our populating can’t work due to long covid that is far worse for the economy than anything propel are complaining about now.

Pfizer x 2 - just a sore arm for a couple of days just like when I have the flu jab
Feel so lucky to have had it (nhs)

MaxNormal · 16/01/2021 17:32

OakSun no offense but that's hardly the most scientific explanation. And covid isn't worse than flu for everybody. I've had flu that made me think I was actually dying.
Can you also cite a source for 20% long covid? It seems to have gone up from 10% which I already thought was unlikely.

ChristmasinJune · 16/01/2021 17:42

I know of 8 people. All said their arm was a little bit sore for a day and one reported feeling a bit fluey for 2 days. That's it.

Firefly89 · 16/01/2021 17:48

I work in a care home so pretty much all the staff and myself have now had both doses of the Pfizer jab.
The most common side effect was a sore arm the next day.
After the first jab I had a sore arm and headache but after the second I only had a bit of an sore arm.
Some of the staff did feel really ill after the second jab as in whole body ache, headache, feeling hot but then completely fine after 24/48hrs
Most of the staff and residents didn’t have any effects at all and those that did recovered 24/48hrs after

badlydrawnbear · 16/01/2021 17:50

I had my first vaccine last week. My arm hurt for a few days. I had a headache one night about 2 days later, but that might have been from lack of sleep or drinking too little or stress or a vaccine side effect.

toodleloooo · 16/01/2021 17:59

DSIL had the Pfizer one and had a bad headache for a few days, but otherwise ok.

WarmHeyerette · 16/01/2021 18:00

Pfizer. Sore arm for 24 hrs, just like the flu. Nothing else, nor did anyone else in my team of 6.

Frangipaniflower · 16/01/2021 18:04

I live overseas and have been vaccinated with the Sinopharm vaccine, no side effects at all.

jdbjdb · 16/01/2021 18:06

We've all had Pfizer at work (NHS) and all fine in my department apart from a sore arm but heard of a couple people in rest of hospital that have had a headache/temp/gone to bed but not many

diddlediddle · 16/01/2021 18:06

If you look up how the vaccine works it makes perfect sense that you may have some side effects. Your body's immune system is being called to arms by the vaccine to prepare a defence "as if" it were encountering the virus (except it isn't). All your body's resources are being used to create this defence. It's harmless (other than feeling unpleasant) and shows just how fabulous your immune system is!

WhydoesItAlwaysRainMe · 16/01/2021 18:11

Pfizer. Has sore arm and aching bones for 24 hours. Felt fine after a day though. I have had covid in September (don't know if that makes a difference )

Angrymum22 · 16/01/2021 18:12

Had Pfizer a week ago, sore arm for 24hrs otherwise fine. Five other staff had it at the same time, between ages of 35 and 60, again no side effects apart from sore arm.
I have my appointment for second dose mid March.

Angrymum22 · 16/01/2021 18:15

The sore arm was no way near as bad as this years flu vaccine. That lasted over a week and I ended up taking painkillers for it.

Thecazelets · 16/01/2021 18:16

Pfizer nearly 3 weeks ago (second dose has been cancelled for now - NHS staff.) Very slightly sore arm for a few hours if I pressed the site of the injection, but no other side effects.

FelicityElectricity · 16/01/2021 18:21

Pfizer vaccine last week. I had some tenderness around injection site and then next day localised swelling for about 24 hours.

Sootess · 16/01/2021 18:23

Had the Pfizer 4 days ago (NHS)
Tender and slightly warm over injection site which is now wearing off. No other symptoms. I’ve had sorer arm with flu jab!

Nogodsnomasters · 17/01/2021 08:02

Sounds like a decent mixture of no issues and side effects then which is good. Just found it weird that everyone I knew so far had a side effect.

I have a sore arm (had Pfizer jab yesterday) Might be a bit more sore than flu but hardly think it’s significant as a side effect.

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/01/2021 10:47

I had the Astra Zeneca jab on Friday -felt like I had a really bad hangover on Saturday felt absolutely fine by Sunday and sore arm but tbh it was no where near as bad as the pneumonia jab

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/01/2021 10:54

Pfizer for daughter and husband (& their colleagues). Only heard of side affects in those who had (or possibly had) Covid.

fresiaboquet · 17/01/2021 11:18

I had oxfrod vaccine on Friday. Fine Friday afternoon, woke up with painful arm Friday night. Felt grim yesterday - really, really washed out, achey and shivery. Arm V painful (never get this with the flu jab)Went to bed at 9pm and slept through till 9.30 this morning , which is unhread of for me (usually up at 5.30 am and always up by 7 at the latest on a weekend, even without an alarm!) Arm less painful today, but feel weird as anything, sort of distant, like I'm moving through treacle, and like I could just go back to sleep!
I just see it as my body working hard to produce the antibodies as it should be. A bit annoying cause I had loads to get done this weekend, but I imagine Ill be fine and back at work tomorrow. And defintiely better than the risk of being unwell wirh COVID
(for reference Im late 40s, no underlying health conditions, fairly fit, not had covid that I know of)

DishedUp · 17/01/2021 11:36

I find this thread really surprising. I had it (pfizer) a couple of weeks ago. Had a sore arm which is to be expected. Also felt quite feverish in the night and fluey for a day or 2. Id have said about 50-60% of my colleagues reported similar. We get regular pcr swabs and all have been negative since so its not covid.

I did have covid in April, so maybe thats the reason I reacted? Actually at the time of vaccine I was surprised I hadn't read anything about people feeling rough afterwards. I do often feel crap after the flu jab too

Side effects are to be expected with a vaccine and its still better than covid. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the vaccine

Tanfastic · 17/01/2021 11:48

I've never had covid and have been regularly tested for this and had antibody blood test as well. Out of our team I had probably the worst side effects so I don't think it makes any difference if you've had covid or not.

Cismyfatarse · 17/01/2021 11:55

I have had no vaccine. But my arm aches.

What does that tell you?
