Who's had vaccine yet and who's had side effects?

I'm in northern Ireland and I know around 6 people who've been entitled to the vaccine, 5 of them had the original one and 1 had the Oxford one. Every single person has had side effects, ranging from as little as stiff, extremely painful arm (needing painkillers) to as bad as vomiting, severe headache, 39 degree temperatures, exhaustion etc.

Why are the side effects more common than other vaccines? Most other vaccines it's like 1 in 10 will get these side effects, 1 in 50 will get these etc but I just found it strange that absolutely all recipients that I know had a side effect of some sort so far.

My parents have had both Pfizer vaccinations. Felt fine for the first one, both felt a bit flu-y for a day after the second vaccination, as did their friends.

Re the sore arm, I had a sore arm for ages after my flu jab so I don't think that's uncommon.

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 16/01/2021 10:28

I don’t think sore arm is a ‘vaccine’ side effect. It’s a side effect of the injection. I’ve had to inject myself with intramuscular injections and it’s outrageously sore. So not anything to do with the vaccine itself. If you gave yourself any intramuscular injection it’ll be painful and more painful depending on your pain threshold ( I have none!)

rosinavera · 16/01/2021 10:45

I had mine last week (NHS) and had a sore arm for a couple of days. My parents (both 84) had it this week and my mum had a sore arm and felt nauseous for a day. However my dad had absolutely nothing - not even a sore arm!

Brightbulbs · 16/01/2021 10:50

Sore arm for about 24 hours, not painful just ‘twingey’ , nothing else. This was first dose Pfizer.

boxingdayclearout · 16/01/2021 11:33

Had Pfizer over four weeks ago. No side effects or issues

NeonK · 16/01/2021 11:38

Pfizer, one dose. Sore arm for 24-36 hours but not enough to need painkillers.

A couple of colleagues reported headaches and/or tiredness but mostly just sore arms.

Rainyrain · 16/01/2021 11:46

I had the Pfizer vaccine a few weeks ago and didn’t have a single side effect, not even a sore arm. My colleagues almost all had the Oxford vaccine on Wednesday and most have felt very unwell. Some are so bad I’m wondering if they actually have covid and the symptoms have just coincided with the vaccine. We all had a routine covid test on Thursday-the day after they had the vaccine so we’ll soon find out. I should add that not everyone is displaying side effects and the people we look after (all over 70 and vulnerable) seem to be feeling fine after their vaccine

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/01/2021 11:48

83 year old MIL had the Pfizer vaccine with no side effects.

CatVsChristmasTree · 16/01/2021 11:51

Had Pfizer 7:30pm yesterday. Arm sore this morning, glands in my throat up and bit since around 10pm,bit that would seem to be rather quick for a side effect so I'm suspecting it may be a coincidence. Temperature 37.4 this morning and a slight sore throat, neck ache.

CatVsChristmasTree · 16/01/2021 11:52

I wonder if side effects are worse in younger people because of the stronger immune system, I think flu vaccine works like that.

Yohoheaveho · 16/01/2021 12:28

@ErrolTheDragon

Your thread title is likely to make this a biased sample who did have side effects.

Sore arms (which is what most are reporting) after intramuscular injections are very common.

This^ and as I understand it the soreness is to do with preservatives in the product causing short-term inflammation rather than anything to do with the virus? (I'm not a medical professional so I may not have put that quite correctly... hopefully someone can put me straight?)
RedRosie · 16/01/2021 12:32

Very elderly parents (both over 85) had their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine a week ago. I am beyond grateful.

No side effects whatsoever. Nothing. Not even a sore arm between them.

chocolatemonster · 16/01/2021 13:51

I had the Pfizer one a week ago and all fine. Slightly sore arm but didn't inconvenience me in any way or need painkillers.

I have had worse holiday jabs!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 16/01/2021 15:35

I had mine 5 hours ago. Arm aches and I feel very tired and headache-y but that may not mean anything. It’s been a long week and I’m using it as an excuse to lounge about. Grin

Side effects are very common according to the leaflet, but they sound like a minor inconvenience in comparison to actually having Covid.

Don’t really mind if I do feel worse tomorrow - just so very pleased to have had it. I’ll report back.

motheroftwoboys · 16/01/2021 15:41

DH had it last week. No side affects apart from the usual slightly sore arm.

Jammygal · 16/01/2021 16:34

Hi had Pfizer just over a month after having Covid and had a raging temp the next day as well as the sore arm . I am convinced my body was basically nuking any chance of the beast getting in a second time 🤣

NeurologicallySpeaking · 16/01/2021 16:41

My sister had the Pfizer one last week. She said the arm pain was pretty bad afterwards and she felt under the weather for a day or so. Not much to complain about for being safer from Covid!

exexpat · 16/01/2021 16:51

Both my parents (80+) have now had two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. No side effects after the first one; second time round my mother felt a bit feverish the next day but was fine again the day after.

Minor stuff like that is definitely worth it for protection against something with a very high death rate in their age group.

Eloradannin · 16/01/2021 16:52

I had the 1st Pfizer dose yesterday. Slight headache and sore arm, but as others say the sore arm is to do with the actual needle not the vaccine.
Worst thing I ever did was have my depo contraceptive jab in my thigh and then go to work a 12 hour night shift!
I usually feel a bit off just after my flu jab. It's your immune system working.
I just feel a bit more aware of how I'm feeling today.

knittingaddict · 16/01/2021 16:54

Spoke to my dad today. My parents (aged 89 and 85) had the jab on Thursday and all fine, apart from an achy arm.

VicSynix · 16/01/2021 16:54

Me (NHS worker). Had the Pfizer about a week ago. No side effects at all, just bruising. The only side effects any of my colleagues have reported is bruises and achey arm.

knittingaddict · 16/01/2021 16:55

I had a slightly sore arm with the flu vaccine, so I imagine the ache is similar to that.

JudyGemstone · 16/01/2021 17:03

Pfizer dose 1 last Monday- pain in arm for a couple of days. Then on Thursday got that achey, feeling generally unwell/coming down with something feeling and went to bed at 8pm. Fine the next morning.

Tanfastic · 16/01/2021 17:15

@Whoareyounow

Oxford here I had sore arm fever, flu like symptoms, chills, headache for a Few days bad enough to stay in bed. It’s lucky I was off work as I wouldn’t have been able to go in. If you read the vaccine information these are all listed as very coming side effects.

Same, Oxford vaccine, felt absolutely rotten, first day off sick for over three years. Had nausea, aches, headache and fever/chills. Lasted a day and a half, but much better after 24 hours.

Most of my colleagues have suffered side effects with the Oxford one, some worse than others but all have felt off in some way.

I had the flu vaccine a few weeks ago and nothing, absolutely fine.

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 16/01/2021 17:16

Colleagues and I got the Pfizer vaccine on Tuesday all reported feeling a bit warm that night and all had a bit of an achy arm for a day or two after maybe a little more tired than normal but we are all working our socks off just now so could be unrelated.
Friends in other areas of health care all seem to be fine too everyone has mentioned achy arms but nothing more.
