It's been done to death now. It was wrong, there's been apologies, it won't happen again. FFS please let it go now.

I'm confused OP why start a thread on a subject you don't want to talk about ?Confused

MessAllOver · 14/01/2021 05:59

It is possible to buy a great deal of food for £30. That amount should go a long way towards feeding a child nutritiously with meat or other protein, fruit, vegetables etc.

Instead, families were given a few cheese sandwiches, half a carrot and pepper, a couple of apples and some sugary fruit juice drinks.

The companies involved have essentially been stealing from hungry children. I'm assuming that your own child doesn't go hungry, OP?

tigger1001 · 14/01/2021 06:01

I disagree op - it's not being talked about enough! It's disgusting what these companies were putting in the food parcels and saying they cost £15/£30 they need held to account for actually stealing from children.

Iggly · 14/01/2021 06:03
@Iggly but there are 1000s of kids that need to be fed that are slipping through??

If you can afford horses and dogs and cats, you do not need help.

When you cant afford heating you need it.

I've been there, luckily my own family feed me but had I not had them would anyone be care? NO.

It's not about judging its about the same rule for all low earners and those kids in poverty. Not feeding fucking horses etc.
Every time you add a “but” then people slip through because everyone has an opinion.

Better to give out universal benefits really (eg like every child gets a meal) then there’s no shame in getting. Sadly during a pandemic it’s impossible to do so but they could do much better.

@muminthesummer

Maybe people are sick of your whining. Biscuit

@HowToSurvive2021

Or we could plan financially before having children.
Or we could get rid of the corrupt Tory scum who yet again prove how dishonest they are.
MsConstrue · 14/01/2021 06:11

I think the news broke on Monday when the mum posted a picture of her parcel. So it's been 3 whole days. Hardly a long time. You don't have much of an attention span do you?

what would you rather talk about? (because children in poverty is just so dull isn't it?).

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 14/01/2021 06:11

@Keeping2ChevronsApart

Is the £30 food voucher per child or family? It doesn't cost £30 to feed a child 5 lunches. Many people have this budget for the whole family for all meals
Check your facts before posting,£30 for 10 days for 1 child.
peak2021 · 14/01/2021 06:26

I'm fed up with the poor government response to Covid, and of profiteering from it.

Namechangebuttercup · 14/01/2021 06:40

People are "fuming" because in trying to make sure that children in the poorest families are going to have enough to eat, some parents who are considered not to need the money will receive it.

There are always dickheads. Always. Does that mean we should actually have kids hungry or undernourished because some other parents are dickheards?

BTW it's not just about hungry stomachs. The psychological damage of the shame around poverty is well-documented and long lasting. Did you hear the mother explain her child's reaction to the box, that her child was crestfallen that this was what she was being given to eat? This was how much she mattered?

The U.K. has an incredibly sick streak to it that appears to be growing. How are people not embarrassed, even on an anonymous forum, to suggest children should be hungry. Especially when their own fridges are full.

Labobo · 14/01/2021 10:25

Were private companies involved ? Surely the Government should have just given some ringfenced money to the LEA ?

@frumpety You'd think. But that would involve prioritising feeding the poor over profit and jobs for the boys.

Backbee · 14/01/2021 10:36

They essentially did. The guidance from the government was to use the catering companies already subtracted to schools, these companies would have at some point gone through a local level procurement process, which is why suppliers across the country vary. There is no overarching government contract for the boxes, they just provided an uplift in funding to enable it. The supplier has ultimate responsibility, but the government should have given them more notice, and it's right that they have now intervened and are going ahead with the much more reasonable and fair vouchers.

This. Even if the parents are "undeserving" (harking back to the Victorian/Edwardian charity committees here Hmm - reminiscent of "An Inspector Calls"), that doesn't change the fact that the children need to be (decently) fed.

herecomesthsun · 14/01/2021 10:49

The only reason these kids are getting food is public outrage. The government doesn't care about ordinary people or their children AT ALL. But it will respond in a limping belated fashion if there is enough in the media etc.

Any excuse for people to slate the government who already pay out child benefit.
UndertheCedartree · 14/01/2021 11:11

@User158340 - and they already provide fsm - why is it ok to take that away from poor DC?

sashh · 14/01/2021 11:15

Interestingly FSM at school usually budget for about 80p per day for the food element, the balance covers wages, overheads etc

Parents have overheads too, the cost of cooking the food, the cost of getting it to the home, the cost of storage if it is frozen or needs to be in a fridge.

It also costs more to produce a meal when you cannot bulk buy.

It should concern us ALL. These children will be looking after us in hospitals, repairing our homes, running shops and deliveries etc.

Well a Tory MP said too much of the money was going to brothels and drug dealers.

What a horrible, mean, badly intentioned post. Look in the mirror and weep. And hope your family never needs financial help and your kids never want for food.
UndertheCedartree · 14/01/2021 11:31

@User158340 - supermarket vouchers were going to drug dealers and brothels? Ok Confused

ssd · 14/01/2021 11:38

Is this in the daily mail yet?

tootyfruitypickle · 14/01/2021 11:43

I speak to people daily in this situation . Count yourself lucky OP that your life has been so blessed to not need help.

Illness, relationship breakdown, loss of job. It can happen to anyone. And for some people all at once.

Horrible thread to start.

herecomesthsun · 14/01/2021 11:44

FSM & DM - yes lots about it.
