Covid Vaccine and side effects

Knobblybobbly · 11/01/2021 19:41

I know several people who have had the Oxford vaccine. Most of them have had quite nasty side effects. Some bad enough to stay off work. Just a few people had so side effects at all.

Does it mean anything either way??

OP posts:

Oh and fwiw I didn't see it as scaremongering.

So far today I've seen some odd responses full stop on MN.

Best being someone to started a thread about typos. You know a lighthearted thread for peoples most embarrassing mistakes.

About 5 posts in someone replied along lines of plenty of sites to google if you want to read this type of thing.

Some people on MN would only be happy if they for to dictate the active threads personally!

My mother, who will be 90 in March, had her first vaccine a week ago. Not sure which she had. No side effects whatsoever. I think there is a chance of mild side effects but this is far better than the alternative. Can't wait for my turn.

vminkookie · 11/01/2021 22:50

I had the Pfizer one today.

Now my arming is throbbing like hell. I think it might actually fall off...but it hurts the same when I have any injection and my arm is still there and I'm alive.

Side effects are normal as long as they pass in a timely manner.

AlandAnna · 11/01/2021 22:57
Grin It was quite obvious to me what you were asking OP!

Yes some may have a bigger response but if you look at other vaccines it doesn’t mean you won’t get a protective level.

Congratulations on your vaccine! Mine tomorrow Cake

Your friends who had time off work are presumably working in a health care setting. It's been a stressful time and perhaps they're tired. Maybe they just took some sick days.

Pipandmum · 11/01/2021 23:10

To answer your question, I do not think the fact you have don't have side effects mean that you have less immunity than some one who does.

boogiebogie · 11/01/2021 23:13

You can read vaers reports lots of reactions and anaphylaxis to the pfizer vaccination.

mumwon · 11/01/2021 23:24

years ago my family & I (was a kid at the time) had to have the typhoid, cholera & (I think!) the yellow fever jab before going another country. We had flu type effects & sore arms for a couple days, & major headaches but it passed & I would rather have that than any of those diseases - ditto with Coronavirus.

LickEmbysmiling · 11/01/2021 23:31

Just wondering if this it what makes it more successful... Stronger immune response

BungleandGeorge · 11/01/2021 23:37

I’ve had various reactions to vaccinations- ranging from mild flu like symptoms to swollen and stiff arm to nothing. I wouldn’t call any of them severe myself. It’s also very possible they’ve come down with another bug at this time of year. I’m not sure whether there’s any research on whether you get more of a reaction if you’ve already had the disease. People on the placebo arm also describe these types of reactions. Not because they’re imaging it but because a lot of these symptoms are very common in life and if you’ve just had a vaccine you’re most likely to put it down to that rather than another infection/ stress etc.
I don’t know anyone who has had a severe reaction

BungleandGeorge · 11/01/2021 23:42

I think you need to provide evidence for ‘lots of anaphylaxis’ for the Pfizer vaccine??

INeedNewShoes · 11/01/2021 23:45

Someone close to me reacted badly to one of the vaccines. She's young and very fit and not prone to drama so I'm confident it is as she says (and the paramedics were concerned enough to take her to hospital). She's on the mend now but it'll probably be a few days recovery for her.

A close friend, also young and healthy, had the other vaccine this week with no side effects apart from a slightly sore arm. And several older friends of friends have had one or other vaccine and not reacted badly.

I don't think OP is scaremongering. The Covid vaccines seem to have more incedence of notable side effects than say the flu jab and it wouldn't put me off having the Covid vaccine but has made me realise that I would want to arrange for someone else to look after DD that day just in case I react enough to not manage to look after a young child.

Glitterblue · 11/01/2021 23:47

My parents had the Pfizer one a couple of weeks ago and no side effects whatsoever. They both alway get side effects from the flu one so we were all fully expecting them to get some but nothing happened.

KihoBebiluPute · 11/01/2021 23:50

I am not an immunologist but my hypothesis would be that the people who have the strongest side effects might be the people who would have suffered significantly worse than others of a similar risk profile if they had caught the actual disease. Those who don't get side effects would be those who might have been able to fight off the bug at home with self care not needing hospitalisation. Side effects are normal though and the majority are nothing to worry about. A headache, sore arm or fever is a minor inconvenience and way better than the alternative.

Em777 · 12/01/2021 00:47

The Oxford/AZ one is supposed to have the most side effects of the three. All should be safe but it seems some people will be in for a rough ride for a day or two after.

I read a subreddit for medical professionals and there was a long thread there about how nasty many of the felt after getting the vaccine, so I believe you OP. The second dose is typically worse, unless you’ve already had covid in which case the first is worse. All were happy to endure it, knowing how bad the alternative is.

notangelinajolie · 12/01/2021 00:53

Nope. The Oxford vaccine is literally the flu vaccine tweaked. It's been tried and tested for years. I'd be more wary of the Pfizer jab (which I am not).
Ltdannygreen · 12/01/2021 01:09

It’s the same with any vaccine. I got the flu job for the first time in 15 years as I didn’t want to have to contend with both, DP got it, 75 year old father in law got it and dd, I was the only one to get side affects, I had a cold for a few days, nothing I couldn’t deal with. The others just had a sore arm. Of course there’s a chance of side affects your body has to build an immune system, anti body’s to fight it.

GinandTonicwithasliceofLemon · 12/01/2021 01:16

After the first one I only had a sore arm. The second one they told me the side effects could be worse (even though the dosage isn’t any different) and the younger you were the more side effects you could potentially have. The day after the second I felt like I was coming down with the flu - I had the shivers, aching muscles, no appetite and I slept most of the day. The next day I was fine!

BlueBaubles12 · 12/01/2021 01:28

My neighbour had it but the only side effects she had were a sore arm, a headache and a weird urge to buy lots of Microsoft products.

Purplethrow · 12/01/2021 01:38

@mumwon I was just going to say the same , years ago my family all had the cholera and typhoid jab and I felt absolutely shocking afterwards , my parents and sister had mild after effects, I was bed ridden with uncontrollable shivering, aches all over and my arm was really painful.

PleaseDontGo · 12/01/2021 07:14

I had first dose yesterday. My arm is really
Sore and achy and I don't feel
Poorly but I don't feel right - but achey and shivery and diarrhoea which I don't know if related. Getting ready for work but could
Really do with staying in bed

LowHighland · 12/01/2021 07:32

First dose a couple of weeks ago, slightly tender arm but nothing else.
All my colleagues had the same, no one properly poorly.

Hadenough80 · 12/01/2021 07:42

It will be the same as any jab, myself husband and son had the flu jab last sep.
All but my son was fine, he had a headache and felt a bit unwell.
Same as babies when they have there's, nothing to worry about and it will be short lived.

ChasingRainbows19 · 12/01/2021 07:45

We’ve got the Pfizer vaccine at work and some have felt a bit rubbish after : headaches, aches etc but nothing paracetamol didn’t help with. And all have been fine the next day and since. Mines booked this week.

I’ve a day off following it just in case but I’m still happy to have it.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 12/01/2021 07:51

I'll take a couple of days of flu-like symptoms over full-blown COVID any time.
