Covid Vaccine and side effects

Knobblybobbly · 11/01/2021 19:41

I know several people who have had the Oxford vaccine. Most of them have had quite nasty side effects. Some bad enough to stay off work. Just a few people had so side effects at all.

Does it mean anything either way??

PaddyF0dder, are you serious in saying that it's not permitted to post an 'anti-vax' thread? And if so, why can't we do so?

For the record, I don't want to start an anti-vax thread and I'm not taking the rise.🙂

GetOffYourHighHorse · 11/01/2021 20:47

I think some people overegg it. Any vaccine can give you a sore arm and make you feel a bit off colour.

They should just tell people to take paracetamol for a day or 2 afterwards to stop the skiving.

Alfaix · 11/01/2021 20:48

I had Oxford on Saturday and yesterday I had a headache and felt tired. Today just the sore arm. Totally worth it!

fiveoldteddies · 11/01/2021 20:56

Ok so I had a temp above 38 C after the second Pfizer vaccine so actually looked it up at the time, and now again. In my age group >55y after first dose 1.4% reported this and 10.9 % after sec dose.

So for those saying it's rare , it depends on what you call rare. But I certainly don't have any idea whether others from my dept had systemic side effects or not...

Kdubs1981 · 11/01/2021 20:57

@Knobblybobbly

For context, 10 of my colleagues had the vaccine on Saturday. 6 today we’re off sick. So in my tiny (and yes, very insignificant) world that’s a 60% majority feeling ill enough to stay off work.

So I was simply curious to know if it meant anything.

Well.... this was fun.

I’ll be off then.

Hi, sorry you've been piled on. I think I get what you're worried about.

What I would say is that it sounds like your colleagues could have COVID (or another virus), which is co-incidental to having had the vaccine.

I think they should be getting a test, as a temperature is a symptoms and others are "unofficial" symptoms, but still fairly common.

They need to get tested

fiveoldteddies · 11/01/2021 21:00

Oh and yes I did go for a test as well which was neg.

Sounds like they pulled a sickie
hopefulhalf · 11/01/2021 21:09

Another question (due to have the 2nd pfzeir jab on friday). If you do get a fever would you get a test or assume it's vaccine SE. I am talking about a low grade short lived fever here.?

rubbishatballet · 11/01/2021 21:12

At my Trust teams can't all be vaccinated at the same time because so many people feel grotty (enough to need a day off work) the next day.

Someone at work was also saying that people who have already had Covid seem to have a stronger reaction, but no idea if there is any scientific basis/truth to that. I've had Covid but not been vaccinated yet, so will be interested to see what happens when I do!

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 11/01/2021 21:27

Gosh @Knobblybobbly are you really so hard of comprehension that you can’t see why you’re being accused of scaremongering? Really??

It seems that what you actually wanted to ask was “do you think having side effects from vaccine means a stronger immune response and more protection from covid” and then in your post to say “ I have had no side effects from the vaccine but colleagues have - do you think a strong response indicates more protection. I can’t find any information on this” no doubt that would have turned into an interesting discussion.

Instead you posted “covid vaccine and side effects” immediately making people seeing it think you’re talking about no side effects or some side effects. You then completely fail to mention in your OP that you’ve had zero side effects instead saying all your colleagues have had awful nasty side effects I know several people who have had the Oxford vaccine. Most of them have had quite nasty side effects. Some bad enough to stay off work. Just a few people had so side effects at all.

Can you use your brain for a minute and think about people on the coronavirus board who might click on a post called ‘covid vaccine and side effect’?

  • people who are worried about getting the vaccine and potential side effects
  • people who are trying to decide whether to get the vaccine

And think about the impact of your post saying all your colleagues have had nasty awful effects from it. Again not even bothering to mention you had it and were totally fine.

Hope that clears things up for you.

User415373 · 11/01/2021 21:29

Vaccines have a very strong placebo affect. Studies into flu vaccines etc have shown this. Not that those you know are making up their symtoms, for them it is very real, but chances are it's psychological not physical or physiological.

DishedUp · 11/01/2021 21:31

I had the Pfizer and had a fever (had an actual temperature above 38), bit achey and general fluey feeling afterwards - only first dose. Id say about 60% of my colleagues had similar for a day.

Its fine, many vaccines have side effects and overall feeling of relief that we have been vaccinated but I'm surprised to see so few people on this thread have had side effects.

We all have regular swabbing and no one has had a positive swab in the week before or since so it was not covid

2021welcome · 11/01/2021 21:32

My mum felt a bit sick for two hours after the second jab. She was fine after that

DishedUp · 11/01/2021 21:33

I think its important though that people do talk about side effects. Other wise you will get ye olde 'the flu vaccine gave me the flu' when people inevitably get side effects.

User158340 · 11/01/2021 21:33

@supersonicginandtonic

Every vaccination I have I end up with a temp, a sore arm and a headache. Always have. I had a day off work after the flu jab in October. It's just one of those things.
I felt like crap for a few days after the flu jab the other month. Wish I hadn't bothered seeing as the flu seems to have disappeared this year. Another girl on my team was off sick for a few days.

Side effects are common with vaccines.

That's what the girl on my team said (previous post)

I am a long way away from a kale eating triathlete type Grin

IHateThisVirus · 11/01/2021 21:37

Colleague at work had it Friday and apparently was very ill with high fever, runny nose, weakness, poor breathing all over the weekend but seemed fine today and in work.

I'm nervous about it. I dont want it for a number of reasons. But will.probably have it because of the pressure at work and everyone at work will hate me if I don't have it (which is shit and says alot about people at the moment and how covid has bought out the worst in even the nicest, usually lovely colleagues)

Standrewsschool · 11/01/2021 21:39

Lots of colleagues have had Pfizer vaccine. Most common side effects were sore arms, and a couple had headaches. Someone else felt fatigue.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 11/01/2021 21:42

A lot of people get this with the flu vaccine too. I couldn't give a toss, I'll take my chances with it.

Ffsnosexallowed · 11/01/2021 21:46

I had the Pfizer vacc on Sunday - but of a sore arm today and feeling a bit warm. Nothing serious and so relieved to have had it.

Holshicup · 11/01/2021 21:55

Totally beside the point but it's wonderful to read so many of you have had the vaccine

Riv12345 · 11/01/2021 22:15

I had the Pfizer vaccine 3 weeks ago- no side effects at all

But a few of my colleagues has had reactions, and had the next day off work.
Symptoms shivers headaches and feeling grotty.

Some people do have reactions to vaccines!

My get gets quite unwell after flu jab.

Luckily so far it's prevented him ever having flu and testing out the effects of that!

I have no idea re illness and you'd never know the answer to this but it would be interesting to know if correlation in reaction to vaccine and severity of illness you'd have with COVID.

My mum is having chemo and had the pziezer one with no side effects
