Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.

@TiersBeforeBedtime

Also.. why have so many people got an axe to grind about B&M? Is it because it's a "poor people's shop"?
Yep, you nailed it.

You’ll spot a general theme - if someone doesn’t use a particular business / sector of the economy, then no-one else should and it’s fine just to close them.

AnotherDelphinium · 10/01/2021 21:41

I'm a train driver, driving into London Friday and Saturday you'd have had little idea we were in lockdown apart from the M&S foodhall at the station is shut.

  • all offices need to be shut
  • all construction sites shut
  • emergency plumbing/electrician/locksmith call outs only
  • grocery shops enforce 'one adult, one trolley'
  • 'The Range' 'B&Q' 'Wilkos' 'Superdrug' 'pets at home' etc become click and collect only
  • all takeaway food/coffee shops to close with the exceptions of delivery and drive through. Drive throughs should be highlighted for those already making a journey, not a separate trip out
  • staff on train station barriers & bus drivers enforcing 'key workers only'
  • schools/nursery open for those with all parents key workers who cannot WFH and VC only
  • anyone told to isolate gets their wage paid similar to furlough rules (80% up to £2.5k)
  • driving to exercise specifically banned and car parks closed at all "beauty spots"
  • those who are fined multiple times banned from using the NHS for 12 months
  • similar to the French scheme whereby before leaving the house you fill in a form stating where you're going and under which exception. If you're stopped and either don't have it or its untrue, fined and escorted home.

So many more ways to tighten this up and actually bring in a real lockdown. Its so disheartening seeing friends in beauty, tattooists, out of work, and likely to not work for months because so many cannot follow the spirit of the lockdown and instead look for any way around them or to be an exception Sad

The sooner everyone gets onboard, the sooner we get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Whattheactual20201 · 10/01/2021 21:41

This is a very lax lockdown compared to the first.
I support going back to March
It’s amazing how many vulnerable children there all of a sudden is compared to the first lockdown.
I have a “ friend “ who has a DD in DDs class, who took her daughter out before the lockdown and then half way through she switched completely and decided she didn’t believe in covid at all.
She told me yesterday that the school are giving her place next week due to her being vulnerable as she can’t work from home because of laptops.
This child has her own phone , switch . Xbox etc at age 6 ! Has 2 trips abroad every year and they haven’t been financially effected by covid.

TiersBeforeBedtime · 10/01/2021 21:41

BTW, the number of people dying with (not necessarily of) Covid where I live is 1/3 of the number it was two weeks ago. There is hope.

fastandthecurious · 10/01/2021 21:42

I hope they don't remove support/childcare bubbles. Me and DH are key workers and I need my mum to do childcare. We've moved our shifts around as much as possible so my mum only has DS 1 day a week. But we can't move them anymore. I only work 3 days a week, neither me nor DH have any annual leave left (renews April) so I will lose a 3rd of my income for god knows how long and i can't afford that drop in pay, neither can I really leave my team in the lurch dropping a day a week for an unknown amount of time. I've tried to get DS in nursery but there's waiting lists everywhere and it's just an extra expense I don't need right now☹️

WrongKindOfFace · 10/01/2021 21:42

Perhaps the army could nail shut all doors and pour gruel through the letterbox once a day?

Moonbabyskalimba · 10/01/2021 21:42

If they close nurseries and demand two keyworker parents before a child can attend, I'll have two choices. Either send my 15 month old to grandparents 3 days a week or completely go under. Furlough is no longer likely to happen, I have no holiday I can use and all childcare juggling would be my responsibility as DP is a paramedic so I can't in good conscience expect him to take time off during a pandemic.

There is a world of difference between WFH with a primary aged child who needs help with schooling and WFH with a toddler who tries to kill themselves at regular intervals throughout the day, can't concentrate on any toy/TV for longer than two minutes and who just wants to grab mummy's laptop. It's impossible to WFH in those conditions. Not to mention the fact that my DS is showing signs of developmental delay and the health visitor has specifically recommended nursery

Buzzinwithbez · 10/01/2021 21:42

over 60s weren't allowed out of the house if they had someone who could shop for them

Cracking idea! Let's lock all the over 60s up!

CouldBeOuting · 10/01/2021 21:43

Close everything non essential. Do as other countries have done and introduce curfews.

Takeaways are not essential. I feel terribly for the people who own and/or work in them (and other non essential businesses) but SOME people are taking the fact that places like takeaways, garden centres and DIY stores can stay open means that it “doesn’t really matter if I meet up with my mates/adult children/grandchildren”.

People really need to start taking this much more seriously.

PrincessNutNuts · 10/01/2021 21:43

@Birthdayrushfaff

The number of people who are keen to get the army on the streets is disturbing. What are the army going to do that the police can’t? Shoot people?

With a bit of luck yes, that's a brilliant idea. Less people milling about transmitting covid.

I'm not a fan of army on the streets but we need to do something to make a takeaway Costa and a walk around B&M Bargains before lunch at McDonalds Drive Thru followed by an afternoon in the park a lot more unusual than it is currently.
HarryLimeFoxtrot · 10/01/2021 21:43

Thewinterofdiscontent

^I think people forget that EVERYTHING used to shut on Sundays and everywhere outside of a big town would have half day closing. Even supermarkets closed at 6pm.
This was 70’s and 80’s.^

So more restrictive than even lockdown has been. Yet apparently no Costa means all the joy from life will be gone.

Your point is utterly irrelevant to current life.

In the 70’s and 80’s I went to my grandparents house for dinner every Sunday with my family. I went to our neighbours house after church for coffee.

User5437 · 10/01/2021 21:43

On another thread no one appears to want nurseries closed, I thought everyone was screaming for them to be closed, how odd.

TiersBeforeBedtime · 10/01/2021 21:44

@BlueBaubles12

😬 In that case, I am happy for everyone never to go abroad again, or to go to a coffee shop again, because I never do those things. I don't go in for bestiality either, so I don't mind if that's also outlawed.

I quite like a bit of B&M, though. And Home Bargains.

echt · 10/01/2021 21:44

Close schools; and libraries; curfew; masks outside; close places of worship; garden centres; playgrounds; one person does the shopping; limit travel to a defined radius, not "local"; limit numbers in shops; hand sanitiser at every shop entrance.

Sorry I've included some stuff that already exists, I'm not in the UK.

This is part of what happened in Melbourne and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

This is unlikely to work in the UK as the government has fucked around so much, they've used up the good will/compliance that's needed to make a strict lockdown work.

TiersBeforeBedtime · 10/01/2021 21:45

Ooh, another Costa and B&M-basher. They are the Greggs Sausage Rolls de nos jours.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:45

Thing is so many complain we are doing worse than other countries yet when people
Suggest meausres those countries have used, people don't want them and we can't have it both ways.
Hopefully within a week or so we may start seeing the effect if this lockdown and some vaccinations ( i know a couple people who has had both) but also as we seem to be now introducing testing for lots more ( no symptoms) maybe we will pick up mire cases , but as long as deaths start going down

PrincessNutNuts · 10/01/2021 21:46

I love it.

But it's always bloody rammed.

Again, people tend to want things closed if they don't use them (especially if they get to do a bit of judging with it, which people like to do with people who use nurseries in the first place) and not want them closed if they're pretty essential to their own life...
Iheartmysmart · 10/01/2021 21:48

Surely by reducing public transport you are just forcing more people onto what’s available? DS works in a supermarket and has to get the bus to work as he’s not been able to take his driving test because of the lockdowns. Why should he put himself at more risk going on a crowded bus when he’s already surrounded by hundreds of people every day just doing his job.

And driving for exercise? Why does it make more sense for me to walk my dog on the crowded area near where I live when I can put him in the car, drive 10 minutes up the road and not see a soul for miles.

Bollss · 10/01/2021 21:48

@PotteringAlong

Our local press are reporting 6pm curfew Closing nurseries Removal of support bubbles Closure of “essential” shops like garden centres.
6pm? Fuck me. Less than an hour to go to the supermarket after work which will now be a hundred times busier because everyone who works will be there at the same time. Slow clap.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:48

@Hardbackwriter the people on my facebook shouting for nurseries to shut and sharing petitions are all people that work in them , they want keyworker and vulnerable only allowed in

Splodgetastic · 10/01/2021 21:49

@donewithitalltodayandxmas No one finds it easy to wear a mask. You just have to try and adapt. I live in a town, so hard not to encounter others and the pavements aren’t all wide enough to give the right amount of distance.

FromEden · 10/01/2021 21:50

those who are fined multiple times banned from using the NHS for 12 months

So just let people die? Sounds like a good plan. But remember, its people seeing their friends and family who are the selfish, evil, psychopaths.

Source?
Also not clear whether they are reporting it as closing these things, or just a list of helpful "suggestions" like this lovely thread

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/01/2021 21:50

@cormorantes

Lockdown has been less than a week! Why are you expecting it to have made an impact yet. Clearly it should have been enforced much earlier but it has not been nearly long enough to have shown it working yet
Lockdown in Wales has been since 20th December. Numbers are starting to drop in areas which peaked first but they are still rising in the North - where they thought that they shouldn’t have been subject to the same measures as the South. I’m imagining that means less compliance and now we’re seeing the results.....
