Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.

If nurseries close I don't know how or if I will be able to work. I was luckily on maternity leave in the first lockdown.
I could lose my job, there are hardly any staff with children (I have a 1 and 3 year old), also the major project I'm working on closes in March, and so this is my busiest time of the year.
The work can't be done in the evenings as it's mostly meetings and working with other people during their working hours.
I don't think it would be possible to furlough me or grant me holiday on my busiest time of the year.
My boss doesn't discuss childcare or pressures at home. He has no kids and expects people to continue as if they don't exist. Sad

justanotherneighinparadise · 11/01/2021 06:39

Shit the papers are now reflecting this! They never go as far as mumsnet suggests but I reckon masks on the street and nursery closures look really likely.

Sostenueto · 11/01/2021 06:42

Tighter restrictions are coming. It could include all of these or some of these.
Supermarkets will be made to enforce mask wearing and limit numbers in shops what they are not doing at the moment. Also limit how many go in together.
Masks to be worn inside AND outside at all times.
Exercise limited to one hour a day and to a mile from home.
Play parks parks skateparks to close
All shops takeaways etc to close so only supermarkets or food shops to be open.
More police enforcement and loads more fines.
No meeting anyone outside.
No mixing indoors
No church
Atm we have a fairly relaxed lockdown compared to March which is definately not enough looking at the amount of people taking the Micky with their bending of rules.

There was someone on here recently who caught Covid from her FIL who had a cough and was awaiting test results but carried on going out.

He spread it to 12 people. They potentially spread it to more.

Perhaps more education for idiots who seem to have no clue what they should be doing and penalties if they go out despite having had a test.

I know loads of people who met up at Christmas and New Year despite it being banned.

The peaks in our area seem to be due to that. Now it is coming down.

Let's let these restrictions work before implementing more.

Why should those of us who have stuck to the rules and businesses be hit because of idiots who can't use common sense?

Why should construction workers and take away shops lose their income? How much more money do you want the government to spend bailing them out?

You have a symptom - stay at home FGS!

Having said that my town is quiet and individual area cases are diving so some people are sticking to rules.

Try and stop hospital transmission as far as possible seems to be the thing to tackle before trapping someone in their house. Take a good look at work places where lots of people are still in.

Honestly.....

Like someone said earlier, some people won't be happy until we're all welded in with a pipe of gruel coming through our letter box.

Birthdayrushfaff · 11/01/2021 06:57

@Quaagars

I'm somebody who thinks B&M should shut too, not because it's a poor persons shop (I'm working class and used to work there) but because people are taking the actual piss

Not sure what you mean by people taking the piss?
In what way?

What I meant was that people are going to B&M to wander about for the sake of it, 'retail therapy' and popping in for a browse as opposed to going there for essentials.

It isn't a conclusion I've drawn out of nowhere, some people (like the woman I mentioned on page 8) have openly admitted as much.

Tiquismiquis · 11/01/2021 06:57

I will be furious if nurseries close. Every service that closes has x impact on transmission but also y economic impact and z social impact. I’d want to see data showing nursery transmission was so bad it outweighed the economic and social impacts of their closure.

LuubyLuu · 11/01/2021 07:00

Agree with the list above.

Basically only leave the house for a weekly food shop, daily exercise as close to home as possible, for a limited period.

All education closed, workplaces closed, construction sites closed, restaurants closed, shops closed except supermarkets, only access to public transport if a critical care worker.
In supermarkets cap the number of people going and out and enforce social distancing.
Mask at all times outside the house.
No mixing with other households.

Track and trace.

This is what is needed to get a handle on it. It's what has been done everywhere that's been a success and is through the other side.

I honestly look at the very light lockdown restrictions, the crappy and inconsistent communication and despair for the UK and the NHS, as I can't see an end in sight.

HazelWong · 11/01/2021 07:05

If nurseries close, I would love to be able to isolate from my family !

RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/01/2021 07:06

only access to public transport if a critical care worker.
And how does that work for people who don't have a car and live too far away from a supermarket be able to walk there?

Totally agree. As well as arbitrary nonsense like masks outside, no driving anywhere to exercise. Feel very sorry for those stressing about support bubbles too.

We don't need to do more for the sake of it, and I am so disheartened at those calling for it, simply because the latest lockdown which was imposed ONE WEEK AGO hasn't eradicated covid yet.

Whatever9999 · 11/01/2021 07:10

@Thewinterofdiscontent

I think people forget that EVERYTHING used to shut on Sundays and everywhere outside of a big town would have half day closing. Even supermarkets closed at 6pm. This was 70’s and 80’s.

So more restrictive than even lockdown has been. Yet apparently no Costa means all the joy from life will be gone.

We still have half day closing in my closest very small town, and in many of the villages shops are only open till lunchtime anyway
ParlezVousWronglais · 11/01/2021 07:12

They are quite good for hiding muttering under ones breath, however.

Also really kept one’s face warm in this cold weather.

Iusedtobecarmen · 11/01/2021 07:14

Enforce mask wearing
Im a keyworker and quite often travel.on public transport. At least 30% people don't wear face coverings. Generalising but mainly young people-late teens early 20s

I work inner city. Lots of household mixing evident.
Lots of takeaway shops open and i mean lots.
First lockdown last year even where i travel and work, was dead. Nothing open aprt from supermarkets. And corner shops etc.
This time garden centres, garages, wilko . Everything apart from clothes shops and pubs.
Traffic pretty normal.
I.dont know anyone who is allowed to work from home
Unless you are office based you are working and travelling as normal
This is a semi lockdown.
People posting saying what else can we do need to.come and look at where i live.and have a shock how its business as usual.
I hate where i live i really do.Angry

Iusedtobecarmen · 11/01/2021 07:21

And round here people are going to any.old shop for the hell of it as the shops they really want to go to are closed. So they go to B &m garden centres instead.
On the bus as well , you can tell those who are going to work to those going on a random journey to see a mate.
Im sick of doing everything right and seeing so many doing what the hell they like.

Distiller91 · 11/01/2021 07:24

I will really struggle to cope if nurseries close but think im gonna have to get it in my head its very likely. I hate living with this constant uncertainty about what's coming next

RedRiverShore1 · 11/01/2021 07:29

On BBC, political correspondent saying about likely more enforcement of current rules, unlikely new rules. Likely more enforcement in supermarkets.

Mistigri · 11/01/2021 07:29

The French absolutely crushed a really bad second wave in October. Case numbers went straight up, and then straight down again after lockdown. Here's what our lockdown involved that you are NOT doing already:

 • mandatory masks in shops and schools, including in the classroom for ages 6 up, within 50m of a school, and outdoors in bigger towns and cities. No exemptions.
 • requirement to carry a completed official form for ALL journeys outside your house, stating your home address and the purpose of your trip
 • nationwide curfew
 • exercise, dog walking etc only allowed within 1km of your home
 • no bubbles

This enabled them to get cases down quickly without closing schools.
@CherryRoulade thanks to you MN has reached a new level of madness
I think Cherry has been sniffing the fuel tbh! People on here are fucking next level crazy. If we gather all these crazies up and lock them away that will reduce the number of people mixing and reduce the cases, job done. Grin

I don’t know how you are ‘seeing’ everyone not following the rules. I haven’t a clue what’s going on outside the house as I rarely get a chance to go anywhere!!’

Genuine question about the “official form” used in France. What if you don’t have a printer at home? Or a Smartphone? I’m thinking of a lot of elderly people.

Hand write. That's what my teenage DD stuck in Paris had to do in the 1st wave before the smartphone version arrived.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 11/01/2021 07:34

My DF lives in a very pretty Surrey Hills village, with several cute cafes, on a popular bike riding route.

During the first lockdown, the place was empty. All of it shut. Since then... and up until about 10 days ago, the place was HEAVING with day trippers and cyclists. Footpaths were congested with so many people, all the litter bins were overflowing with coffee cups onto the ground. Cars blocking peoples drives.

No parking restrictions in force. It was madness.

My DMs neighbour struck up a distanced conversation with a family who’d travelled there from Basildon!

Finally...Finally...they’ve forced the cafes to close, and that’s made a bit of a difference.

It seems to be the lure of the takeaway coffee that does it. Oh, and a loo.

If it's not already been mentioned...

Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??
RunGinSleepRepeat · 11/01/2021 07:36

I’m really worried they’ll stop support bubbles. I’m a single parent of 3 and really struggled with the last lockdown without one
