Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.
@Watermelon999 i live in sw and our pubs ( well ones I go to) were really strict but my friends/ familiy in London Seems pubs were not quite so although I am sure that not case in all , just in area they are.
We are NW and had mixed experience. A couple were very stringent and you felt as safe as you could, but the last we went to in early Dec had many groups, obviously non-household, one in particular 2 young couples, 8 kids between them, all running around the pub and the parents running after them, around everyone else’s tables with no masks on.

It’s a shame, as that experience put us off booking anywhere else.

GreenlandTheMovie · 10/01/2021 22:25

@Lexilooo

Why are people wanting curfews? What do you think happens after 8pm that can't happen before?

All see a curfew achieving is busier supermarkets during the day.

I can only think the powers that be must think that people sneak out after the typical 9-5 working day is over and maybe go somewhere to have some fun...

So they need to crack down on that. Work and paying your tax only allowed now.

Yep. Let's just suck every last piece of joy out of life hmm

Nothing joyful about a pandemic.

Yes, it's a pandemic, but it's also a pandemic that the vast majority of people survive.
Get some perspective!

All I can say is, for all those people slating Boris and Co. I for one am I glad you lot aren't in charge!
You won't be happy until we're all as paranoid and in misery as you are.

tatutata · 10/01/2021 22:27

My sister is completely alone. No support bubble would kill her.

LongDistanceClaret · 10/01/2021 22:27

Haven’t read the thread but they could maybe close takeaway coffee shops.

Although I think the main culprit is that sadly a reasonable proportion of our society doesn’t really give a shit about their community (I’m talking about the sort of people who drop litter, don’t pick up their dog shit if no one’s looking, gob onto pavements, steal stuff if it’s not locked . Obviously varying degrees of it but essentially they do want they want to do and give zero fucks.

ballsdeep · 10/01/2021 22:27

@R2221

I thought household mixing was banned long ago??? Why are people still doing it ?? PEOPLE ARE DYING!! In 1000s. The NHS is getting butchered. Do we really live in such a scarily selfish world?
It's not scaringly selfish though sometimes

For example. I rely on my parents for childcare. Myself and husband are both teachers, we have to go into work to teach live in an empty classroom 😡 There are five or six children in a hub. What am I to do with my baby?! She doesn't go to a childminders . Should I strap her to my back?
The thing is, the guidance is so so inconsistent.
They are telling people schools are safe, then they are not, then they can mix, now they can't. People need to go to work, teachers are being forced in by head teachers to love stream and told they are lucky to have jobs when they bring up their own home situation
It's shit but not everything is clear cut

MrsJBaptiste · 10/01/2021 22:29

Why can't we have a lockdown like the first in March?

It was unbelievably shit but people seemed to stick to it. This lockdown is really getting to people as most of us are sticking to the rules but some aren't. Why should I not see my parents for weeks when the person across the road have family calling in all the time?

CantSayJack · 10/01/2021 22:30

So people want tighter restrictions on primary school places but want to keep support bubbles? 🧐
All household mixing should stop for starters, too many taking piss and using it as an excuse to mix.

HelloDaisy · 10/01/2021 22:30

Construction industry needs to close. All sites are still open and trades allowed into peoples homes to carry out all kinds of work.

I work in a trade company and in the first lockdown our phones were silent for over 2 months. Not a single person wanted us working for them save a few farmers with emergencies but this time our phones haven’t stopped with people wanting all kinds of work carried out asap. None of them are worried, only me it seems, and it’s hard to keep going and keep everyone safe.

I know of a few big sites that are having to close due to outbreaks of covid and they are all working outside.

Think you need some perspective MrsMomoa!

Did you not see the news about temporary morgues filling up in Surrey? Those 'bodies' are peoples loved ones.. but feel free to call those that give a shit, paranoid and 'in misery' ffs!

Because people have already done massive stints of being limited to what they can do and see and they are bloody fed up. The death rate is tiny!

I'm sticking to it and have no idea what my neighbours are doing. It doesn't affect me.
I'm focusing on making the next few months as happy as possible within the rules.

Loads could be done:

 • fine all companies forcing people to come into work when they could wfh;
 • limit and enforce how long people can leave the house for and how far they can go from home;
 • stop tradespeople coming into people's homes unless for (provable) emergency;
 • open shops can only sell food, newspapers, list other genuinely essential items and must cover/corden off non-essential items;
 • only childern of two key workers (from a shortlist of what is really a key worker not some list that 75% of the population can squeeze themselves into ) and vulnerable childern can go to schools;
 • cleaners, nannies, other staff no longer allowed to work in other people's homes unless the are live in (exemption for genuinely needed carers);
 • no longer allowed to meet up with anyone outside family (ie no more walking with a person outside family);
 • no exception for e.g. personal trainers even outside;
 • curfews
 • only one person per household allowed to go shopping etc (ie one person nominated an always goes)
 • proper enfocement of wearing masks inside in all public places - so many people are not wearing them it is ridiculous;
 • close all the non-food takeaways - no one "needs" to get a coffee from Costa to go for a walk;
 • no more click and collect at high street shops (only exception food shopping orders);
 • close nurseries;
 • controls on who can use public transport (need to prove key worker status and that travelling to or from work);
 • close garden centres and places of worship;
 • make people register their support bubble so that they can't use the support bubble excuse for numerous uncheckable "bubbles"
So much more could be done particularly if we used a more French/Spanish system of needing paperwork to go out (ie proving time left house and address so it is clear how long someone has been out for and how far they have travelled).

Unnecessary and uncalled for. No evidence to suggest a) churches and places of worship are open or full and b) they are at fault for spreading new variant.
Lexilooo · 10/01/2021 22:34

@greenlandthemovie

The curfew suggestions seem to be coming from posters here not any powers that be though.

Seriously don't they realise that some of us are still working? I have worked throughout from home not seeing a soul. The only time I leave the house is in the evening to get some exercise and do some shopping. Everywhere is deserted. The shops are quiet, the roads are quiet I see no one. What am I supposed to do with a curfew, never leave home? Or try to get to the shop on my lunch break when it is crazy busy?

A curfew is a fucking dumbass idea proposed purely by people who get some sick pleasure from restricting other people's lives. It has no benefit in terms of stopping the virus and will actually make it spread more.

angrysquirrel73 · 10/01/2021 22:34

R2221 when you say thousands are dying, yes they are but just be careful when you read headline numbers, though they may report 1000 deaths in a day - the deaths did not occur in a single day - they occurred over a number of days and when I looked a couple of days ago the peak (still not great I know) was about 630 deaths in a single day. And don't forget these are deaths WITH COVID not OF COVID. Sadly some of these people are already unwell with other conditions.

Wester · 10/01/2021 22:35

@namechangetoxyz

Everybody with surnames beginning A to M not allowed out for 4 weeks then N to Z the next 4 weeks.

Enforced by the self appointed Mumsnet Patrol Guard , no qualifications or experience necessary.

Defo this.

Mumsnet Patrol Guard can all be issued with drones to enforce so they can WFH.

Or....all those kids who aren't in school can be give a drone, gotta hunt down people outdoors, sort of like Pokémon Go...

HazeyJaneII · 10/01/2021 22:35

The death rate is tiny!

Say what now?!

Valenciaoranges · 10/01/2021 22:36

As already stated:
Places of worship
Garden centers
B&M and the like
Nursery schools
Masks outdoors

I’m not religious myself but is this actually based on anything? Are religious services a significant contributor to the case numbers?

Very worried that childcare and support bubbles will be taken away. Fwel like crying at the thought to be honest.
