Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

They are not under house arrest. It is has a very specific legal definition.

They're not under house arrest but aren't allowed to leave their houses...

So not under house arrest.

If you’re going to ban Amazon deliveries are you going to ban the Royal Mail too. I mean, who needs post? It’s all just an unnecessary risk and the mail order sector hasn’t been anywhere near as fucked over as the other sectors of the economy. It’s time they got theirs.

Jellykat · 10/01/2021 22:12

Temporary morgues starting to be used in Surrey Sad

At the end of the day its busier in this lockdown, then the first.. things need tightening up fast and i agree with a lot of the suggestions here, i.e closing churches, nurseries, garden centres etc.

Uiseag · 10/01/2021 22:12

The government needs to really crack down on businesses taking the piss and forcing workers into the office because they simply prefer it that way. Plenty of people I know can work from home but their bosses are so set in their ways they can't possibly get their heads around zoom meetings being effective. They want to micromanage and hover over their employees simply because that's the way it's always been and they can't adapt. There needs to be heavy fines for businesses who do this. They need to be able to prove it can't possibly be done from home. Of course factory workers need to be on their machines but the vast majority of office jobs don't need people gathered together in one spot. I'm at a loss for suggestions to my friends on how to tackle this, there needs to be somewhere to report them to that will actually take action as HSE don't seem to give a shit.

This.

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Why does Boris need to be in a support bubble?
Carrie has her mother there to help her with childcare. I imagine she hardly sees Boris and it must be very lonely.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2021 22:13

Oh FFS, don't split hairs. OK they aren't technically under house arrest but just can't leave their house. What a stupid, depressing idea.

Nothing joyful about a pandemic

I'm going to squeeze every last drop of joy from it that I can.
There's no point borrowing misery. What a waste of a life.

HOS8595 · 10/01/2021 22:14
@HOS8595 same here. Takeaways and Amazon deliveries are about the only things I have to look forward to now and some people want to ban those.

There's no reason for a curfew when sod all is open!
Those people probably can’t afford to get a takeaway or have amazon deliver treats so they don’t see why anyone else should.

The whole thing is pathetic.

Lexilooo · 10/01/2021 22:14

Why are people wanting curfews? What do you think happens after 8pm that can't happen before?

All see a curfew achieving is busier supermarkets during the day.

Luckyelephant1 · 10/01/2021 22:14

To me, tighter restrictions would be to go back to the restrictions of the very first lockdown back in March. There was no construction or building work allowed, garden centres etc weren't open, even takeaways were shut. So there is still quite a lot that could be tightened. Not saying its right or wrong. But I think the simpler the rules, the less likely people will be to try and bend them or find loopholes. It feels like the general public took the first lockdown very seriously (roads were almost totally empty, etc) whereas its definitely not been the same in subsequent lockdowns.

rookiemere · 10/01/2021 22:15

Parliament being suspended and MPs having to do their business via video call would send a strong message about how serious this is. Or at the very least they could wear masks when not speaking.

Hard for others to take it seriously when those in charge don't think the rules about wfh apply to them.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 22:15

@HalfPastThree tier 2 allowed 6 in pubs etc, technically you were meant to be in same household bit lots were meeting who were not .
I have seen lots of pictures and also heard how some places were getting around it .

Watermelon999 · 10/01/2021 22:15

@NotMeNoNo

I'm sure a big part of it is people who can't work from home, can't be furloughed and can't afford to walk away from their jobs or avoid public transport. Warehouses, manufacturers, finance, supply chains, transport. People don't have options and not every workplace will be Covid safe.
I agree, probably all indoor mixing, whether work or shopping or social/bubble/childcare.

Covid safe doesn’t exist, it would be better to say measures to minimise the risk.

I fear the further restrictions will be outdoor ones which will make no difference.

It would be helpful to know where and how most people are picking it up, eg mask or no mask? Indoor or outdoor? And 2m or less.

HOS8595 · 10/01/2021 22:15

Nothing joyful about a pandemic

Let’s suck the life out of everything then shall we. Fucking ridiculous.

namechangetoxyz · 10/01/2021 22:15

Everybody with surnames beginning A to M not allowed out for 4 weeks then N to Z the next 4 weeks.

Enforced by the self appointed Mumsnet Patrol Guard , no qualifications or experience necessary.

safariboot · 10/01/2021 22:16

What I think would make sense is closure of non-strategic workplaces. If it's not providing essential goods and services it should not be open. And if it's an office it should not be open - companies have had plenty of time to arrange working from home so tough shit to those who couldn't be bothered.

Workplaces that are open need to be doing things right. "Covid safety" where I work was piss poor before last Tuesday (I've not been in the office since).

What I think we'll actually see is either the government surrendering, or pointless stuff that makes no difference and is even counterproductive.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2021 22:16

@HOS8595 people also seem to forget that Amazon deliver food

Buzzinwithbez · 10/01/2021 22:17

I'd have thought that if we could come up with a vaccine in ten months, we could at least get to grips with these basics.

I agree, I wonder if this will delay pubs reopening as many were irresponsible letting people who were obviously non household in for meals.

It gives the genuine ones a bad name.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 22:18

@princessnutsnuts I am preferring to look on the optimistic side and I don't think as many mixed at xmas as some think and a lot who did , did with caution.
Also one day in school was not ideal but I know more that had an inset day that day than didn't so
Hopefully that will of helped a bit and secondaries were not due back in and they seem to of had the bigger cases

HOS8595 · 10/01/2021 22:19
@HOS8595 people also seem to forget that Amazon deliver food
Soon we will only be allowed to buy ‘essential’ food and they will cordon off all chocolate and junk food aisles.

That will make the miserable gits on here gunning for a tighter lockdown happy.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 22:19

@Watermelon999 i live in sw and our pubs ( well ones I go to) were really strict but my friends/ familiy in London Seems pubs were not quite so although I am sure that not case in all , just in area they are.

crumpet · 10/01/2021 22:20

Shops could certainly be stricter about the number of people let in at any one time, and the message about shopping alone unless there is simply no alternative should be reinforced.

Fingers crossed.

But in my local area about three weeks after the 27th December Garden Centre sale is going to be a blood bath.

coronafiona · 10/01/2021 22:23

People I know are using the 'exercise with one person outside' to meet others, but I've also see if groups meeting outside because 'it's ok, we've all been isolating' and 'we know each other so it's ok' type attitudes.
I'm in two minds; I know for some people the exercise with one person is saving their sanity; but on the other hand the longer it goes on the more we're all going to suffer.
