The Chris Witty Video !

Travelledtheworld · 10/01/2021 09:04

Huge respect for Chris Witty dealing with a very difficult job.
But he isn't really the right person to front the Governments new video to tell people to stay at home.
Who would you use to get the message across to men, teenagers, deniers and other hard to influence people and what would they say ?

OP posts:
yankeedoodledandee · 10/01/2021 09:07

Who would you use? What do you think they should say?

Lemons1571 · 10/01/2021 09:10

HRVY and Dua Lipa??

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/01/2021 09:17

He is not the right person to deliver his speech about what we ought to do/be doing? This hugely intelligent, highly qualified, practicing medic isn't the correct person?

Are you really going there?

Agree. I take a great deal more notice of him than any politician/celebrity I can think of.

Dee1975 · 10/01/2021 09:20

Can’t think of anyone better or more qualified over the chief medical officer to be honest!

vminkookie · 10/01/2021 09:36

Are you saying this because he's not 'attractive'?

There's no one better qualified.

Who would you suggest?

niceupthedance · 10/01/2021 09:51

I think Johnathan Van Tam would be good he seems down to earth

giletrouge · 10/01/2021 09:54

He is the right person and his name is Chris Whitty. WHITTY with an h.

Beyonce and Eddie Izzard and Donald Trump were all busy and turned the job down; in fact they all suggested Whitty. He got the job! Good for him. Give the man a chance.

lljkk · 10/01/2021 10:04

Witty carries more authority for me than (eg) BoJo). I like Witty's delivery style & factual presentation.

Seems to me like stay-home campaign needs all kinds of voices to promote it.

Travelledtheworld · 10/01/2021 10:11

OK

  1. Personally I think Chris WHITTY is great. Huge respect for him.
  1. But he is a straight, white, educated middle aged man. Are teenagers, young working class men, Covid deniers etc going to listen and respond to his plea, which is essentially the same message as Boris and Ministers have been unsuccessfully trying to impart for month.

Just looking for ideas.
Rapper ? Footballer ? Instagram influencer ?
My DD 21 flippantly just suggested his message, but accompanied by a TicToc video.

I thought we had thankfully got away from 'sack off the expert get someone glamourous and connected in' mentality that Gove and his chronies would have us all do.

I want the best expert telling me what to do thanks!

You have got to be joking?

the80sweregreat · 10/01/2021 10:15

@Lemons1571

HRVY and Dua Lipa??
Well not them in particular , but maybe someone young or an ' influencer' type who could maybe explain to the younger people why they have to stay at home? Not such a bad idea maybe?
Travelledtheworld · 10/01/2021 10:15

@yankeedoodledandee.
Just taking the opinions of the Vox Pop as (not) represented on Mumsnet

Idiots are idiots, it doesn’t matter who delivers the message, they still won’t listen.

ThatDamnKrampus · 10/01/2021 10:19

The problem is COVID deniers and people flouting the rules will continue to do so regardless of who gives the message. Can’t argue with stupid and all that.

I think Chris Whitty (orJVT) are the best placed people to give the message.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 10/01/2021 10:19

He's got to be one of the gentlest souls on the planet, as well as highly intelligent and good at his job, why are you being negative about him op?

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 10/01/2021 10:21

Ahhh I see what you're saying, he's too white and law abiding for you is he op?

ProbablyFault · 10/01/2021 10:21

I think the CMO is the right person to advise the public during a global pandemic. It's why they're the CMO.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 10/01/2021 10:22

I am more irritated by the fact he says “ stay home”, why does everything have to be Americanised. Why not “ stay at home”?
Rant over.

Sorry but I think you are being ridiculous. My sons are young working class men and they arent mixing with friends at all. They are bored rigid but sticking to the guidelines. When I go out a walk its couples in their 60s and 70s I see standing together chatting.
lljkk · 10/01/2021 10:28

tbh, I'm pretty sure Matt Hancock's blunt

"Don't Kill Granny" message was quite effective with my young adult offspring.

A rapper would put off DS1 (tribal identity, not liking that music at all).

DD & DS would both ignore anything a footballer said.

Like I said: variety of voices is fine.

DoubleHelix79 · 10/01/2021 10:29

I think Chris Whitty is the right spokesperson for a significant part of the population. He's seen by many as more trustworthy and knowledgeable than politicians and other public figures. His no-nonsense style works well for me.

That said, there has been quite a lot of research on how to communicate scientific information to people (for example relating to vaccine hesitancy). The key is to use messengers that people trust, and that will vary significantly between audiences. Some will listen to religious leaders, others to celebrities. Opinions are also shaped very significantly by friends and family, as demonstrated by the spread of conspiracy theories via social networks. Using a variety of channels and messengers will be key.

Frazzled2207 · 10/01/2021 10:30

I respect Chris Whitty but I think JVT is better at engaging with the public and is a better media “face”.

People respect him for being pretty much the only person connected with the government for calling out Dominic Cummings about the ridiculous Barbara castle trip for starters.

Frazzled2207 · 10/01/2021 10:30

Barnard not Barbara! Obvs talking about JVT
