Huge respect for Chris Witty dealing with a very difficult job.
But he isn't really the right person to front the Governments new video to tell people to stay at home.
Who would you use to get the message across to men, teenagers, deniers and other hard to influence people and what would they say ?

@niceupthedance

I think Johnathan Van Tam would be good he seems down to earth
No. I've had my fill Of his 'penalty shoot out' comments.

CW is a good choice, but I think a variety of people of all ages/colours/backgrounds/known:unknown

In the hope that people connect with one of them...

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/01/2021 18:23

@JustDanceAddict

My DH calls him ‘charmless’. He really is devoid of personality.,
It's a shame your husband is devoid of personality & also rude.
Flaxmeadow · 10/01/2021 18:25

I wonder if any of the people ignoring the rules even watch the news or briefings

But but but, we have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter memes. Boring old in depth news reports, based on research and the latest scientific evidence, are for the olds and boomers!

CuppaZa · 10/01/2021 18:27

Chris Whitty is perfect for it

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 10/01/2021 18:37

Chris Whitty is perfect for most adults and people who watch mainstream TV. What we need are the use if other media platforms. He is great on Twitter but we possibly also need him to create a TikTok pretty swift!

InterfectoremVulpes · 10/01/2021 18:42

Maybe we could suggest a celebrity to deliver the message to each demographic not sticking to the rules, because it sure as hell isn't just young people.

TokyoSushi · 10/01/2021 18:46

It would seem that I'm in the minority here, but I'm a big Chris Whitty fan! Calm, clear, sensible, what's not to like?!

If not him or JVT then I'd like Idris Elba to tell me to stay at home!

Purplethrow · 10/01/2021 18:52

I guess anything is worth a try but I don’t think it’ll work. Everybody knows the rules but some choose to ignore them or convince themselves they are following them when they’re not.

That’s not a very nice way to speak about your DH ...... 😬

SmellsLikeAHamsterCage · 10/01/2021 21:49

I like Chris Whitty. But, yes I see where you are coming from. Different audiences need different messages.

Marcus Rashford, maybe? The govt. don't like him much though, I imagine.

DontBeShelfish · 10/01/2021 22:00

I think they did this in Finland - got Instagram influencers known nationally to take part in a government information campaign. Seems to have worked quite well there.

Pathetic. What an insight into Western decadence it is when Instagram influencers command more respect during a pandemic that a Chief Medical Officer. Perhaps Covid should be allowed to wipe us all out.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 22:36

Some if the footballers couldn't do it as they have broken the rules themselves
Its a public health message so done by a public health representative

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2021 07:03

They could do a mix of people. Marcus Rashford would be good, plus 2 or 3 others, interspersed with clips of Prof Whitty giving key points. I'm listening to Chris. Big show of masks, hand washing and social distancing.

Distribute the message on a variety of platforms. Get all the social medias to show it as often as all the adverts they are good at showing us. Make everyone see it multiple times a day.

DontBeShelfish · 11/01/2021 07:10

@GCAcademic Perhaps, but younger people are more likely to listen to someone their own age whom they admire. Personally, I like Professor Whitty but then, I'm not the target demographic for an Instagram influencer. Smile

PJsEveryday · 11/01/2021 07:51

So something is only worth paying attention to it its told to us by someone famous or attractive or an influencer? Has our society really become that shallow?

I think Chris Whitty is ideal for the job - calm, without the faux sad face or mock concern that every celebrity would use if they were given the job. His very profession and expertise means he (obviously) knows what he's talking about.

Useruseruserusee · 11/01/2021 07:56

Surely we need a range of voices, at local level as well as national. I live in a hotspot and the local religious leaders have been really proactive with messaging. I think that’s a good strategy.

peak2021 · 11/01/2021 09:07

It is not who I would use, but how I would set an example. Young people are not persuaded enough when they see Dominic Cummings not sacked, people allowed to travel to Dubai and not have proper quarantine on return (confined to a hotel as happens with Australia), and football/other sports continuing.

Even a simple thing such as the government press conferences not having three people in the same room would be a start.

Purplethrow · 11/01/2021 10:05

@PJsEveryday I totally agree. I bet if Chris Whitty announced supermarkets giving shoppers £50 if they wear a mask , everyone would hear that. It’s because lots of people are selfish and only do things that benefit them.

DenisetheMenace · 11/01/2021 10:10

So it seems.

sashagabadon · 11/01/2021 10:14

I think Whittyis ideal for this. He can really carry off serious and I for one do not want to disappoint him Grin
Teens seem to love him too with all the tic tocks and memes with him in ( and not as many taking the piss as you might expect!)

sashagabadon · 11/01/2021 10:17

If I was Marcus Rashford or anyone like that I’d steer well clear of this. The second you do it the press will be all over you looking for any occasion when you did not comply with every single rule. It’s a lose lose for them.

apalledandshocked · 11/01/2021 10:20

I think young working class men (and women) are more likely to be Key workers (obviously not all of them). Therefore they are more likely to be seen out and about - but that doesnt mean they arent complying!

Agree, our 17 and 25 year olds have a lot of respect for him.
Did anyone see the question/answer session on BBC this morning? I thought his response to a little girl’s question was perfect: warm, human, factual, not condescending.

^This. I have a 15yo daughter. Fortunately she's not vacuous and dimwitted enough to need to have important official information filtered through celebrities in order to believe it, understand it or consider it relevant.

Fgs. Some people have enough trouble telling the difference between news/facts and advertising/'fake news'/curated content/lifestyle influencing/conspiracy theories, without the government actually deliberately having them spouted by the same unqualified people!
