Simple really. Universities are not open for the vast majority unless veterinary etc.....yet many are turning up already...

Falmouth 200 students back despite University not open....

Why don't they follow guidelines...

Aibu they can do what they like
Yanbu they should follow the guidelines and stay at home

@woodlands01

Rent rebate for 2nd and 3rd year student in a private rental contract? I don't see how that is going to happen. And I (as many other parents) pay the rent. Fabulous.
Many students pay it out of their mtce grant, working to pay for everything else. so, a property they can't use, a uni experience that is anything but and crappy online learning.....

Meanwhile....
The vice-chancellor of the University of Plymouth has seen her pay packet swell by more than £6,000 to £288,676 with 11 other staff paid more than £100,000 a year

Eye watering! far more than Johnson, dealing with a pandemic.

Uni is not their home though is it. Lets not pretend otherwise. It is temporary accomodation.

Temporary or not, if they’ve signed a rental contract for it they are obligated to pay rent for even if they don’t use it.

My son pays some of his rent with the part time job he has in his uni town. It’s a private let and he signed the contract for it in the spring term of his 1st year, before lockdown 1, it runs from June to June.

I didn’t really want him to go back in September to start his second year, but he was obligated to pay fees and rent whether he went back or not, and there is no way to pay it if he isn’t working (loans don’t cover it all by quite a long way).

He works in a small supermarket and his little sister is on the shielded list, so at least by living with his same age, healthy peers, he isn’t putting her health at risk.

Besides, lots of towns and smaller cities rely on students for the economies that support permanent residents. Small businesses are suffering enough, without the added difficulty of their usual customer base ceasing to exist.

It depends what you mean by temporary. Some courses are 6 years long. Did you think you home/ job / marriage was temporary when you had been there for 5 years ?

I haven’t read the full thread but I work for a university and the guidance for students is that those who never went home for Christmas should stay here for the duration of the lockdown. The majority of the others should stay where they are but there are a few exceptions ie for medicine / veterinary / PGCE / postgrad research students who have a valid reason that they need to use a lab or other facilities. Students who don’t have access to a quiet space to study or for health and safety reasons (including mental health) are also permitted to return

So I think YABU because 3% of students on site is very few especially considering the above exceptions can amount to a significant amount of students

Luckily we are able to pay their rent
But having done so I am very glad they have gone back to live in the flats

DD has a cozy little 1st floor room with view over lovely park. I'd be quite happy to live there myself.

On the negative side, her course is supposed to be OSCEs, lab-work & vocational; she's had total 2 hours of in person learning in first term. My guess is terms2 & 3 will be similar. There was no academic need for her to live at Uni to do her course, at all.

Leafy suburb of large city. Multiple student accommodation blocks . A family member is a secondary school caretaker and he's already having problems with them trying to climb AstroTurf fencing and gathering in groups on the school fields. Police been out a few times
