It’s back under a new name “clap for heroes.”

@Friendnextdoor

The bitterness against doctors, nurses and carers in this thread is astounding. We are not 'lucky to still be in paid employment' we are normal people doing a job (most of us aren't actually paid all that well actually) and now we face comments like this as if somehow nobody should show any sort of appreciation for the people who care for them... as don't we already know how lucky we are! I don't feel lucky, my colleagues and I are at breaking point and we will be suffering the effects for years to come. Some are already being diagnosed with PTSD. I really do feel for people who are struggling financially, emotionally and mentally but we are not exempt from those things. My own mum died, my colleague's husbands business has collapsed and they are having to sell their family home, countless other colleagues are working and also caring for vulnerable relatives and are quite frankly fucking terrified of taking anything home. So, no we don't want you to clap for us but we would also appreciate it if you would stop framing us as the lucky ones. We have lost relatives, homes and have still been turning up day after day to care for everyone else. And actually no, we're not alright as we are priority for the vaccine, incase nobody noticed we have been working for months with no adequate protection so it's all a bit too little, too late.
(((HUG)))

Thank you for doing what you do x

Frankly I'm utterly disgusted at a lot of the posts on this thread.

Clap/don't clap - whatever. But some of these posts are vile & some posters should be ashamed of themselves.

As for the ones saying people chose their jobs, yes they did, but I doubt many of them expected to be at the coal face of something like Covid, mishandled this badly & without adequate protection or adequate staffing.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/01/2021 11:19

@laidbacklife

Oops voted incorrectly. No, I won’t be clapping.
@laidbacklife. You can change it by selecting the other option.

@VeganVeal I cant wait, I've been practicing on my trombone all day, the street are in for a treat tonight

I hadn't even realised today is Thursday and therefore The Clap, such as it will be, is tonight. If her over the road, whose son is an anti-social menace, stands out banging her pans together and glaring sanctimoniously down the street at the (myriad of) houses that are clap-free, I hope it pisses with rain.

user1471565182 · 07/01/2021 11:54

Nobody did it round here even the first time cos its all Polish and Romanian down here, but I really want to go watch somewhere's area busybody come out and be the only one to do it.

user1471565182 · 07/01/2021 11:57

Anyway we're going to need to stimulate the economy. rather than just printing money give NHS workers a significant pay rise.

Echo08 · 07/01/2021 12:04

I am a community carer and I know myself and the fantastic carers I work with found it embarrassing arriving at a call at that coinciding with the clap time. We don't view ourselves as special we are just going out doing our job that we love and trying to keep people safe. We would rather social care was better funded than claps .

Echo08 · 07/01/2021 12:08

@HOkieCOkie

No I’m not gonna clap for people doing a job they chose to do and are being paid to do.
Yes we chose the job and we love it and will keep doing it in my case community care .Do you actually realise how scary and stressful it is at the moment. We are doing our utmost to keep our vulnerable elderly safe. Always one isn't there. When I started 30yrs ago I don't remember a pandemic being in my job contract but I will STILL do the job I chose because I care deeply for those I care for and their families.
UserMcNewName · 07/01/2021 12:22

No. I'm going to follow the lockdown rules, continue to not vote Tory and treat people with respect. This last one includes but is not limited to things like not screaming at a GP receptionist because an emergency means my appointment is delayed and not talking down to shop workers as if they are somehow beneath me.

Janegrey333 · 07/01/2021 12:53

No. Didn’t last time, either. It was a pointless exercise devised to paper over the cracks.

GabsAlot · 07/01/2021 13:33

no they need money and resources not a fucking round of applause and if boris starts it again i'll lamp him

warmandtoasty2day · 07/01/2021 14:20

clapping is totally wankish and pointless in this case as it was before, along with banging pots and all the rest of it, just fuck right off with this stupidity.

squeezeapplesmakejuice · 07/01/2021 14:29

No.

KumquatSalad · 07/01/2021 14:32

No.

We do not need a return of that totally empty public gesture.

It’s even worse when they call people ‘heroes’.

Jimdandy · 07/01/2021 14:36

No. It’s virtue signalling nonsense.

I’ll be emailing my MP (again) to express my disgust that nurses haven’t had a pay rise, the bursary was removed and the NHS isn’t fit for purpose.

Womencanlift · 07/01/2021 15:31

Apologies if this has already been mentioned as not read all the comments but I noticed that the lady who originally tweeted about doing the clap has taken her tweet down

Hotcuppatea · 07/01/2021 16:24

I'm glad she's taken it down. She really didn't read the room well at all.

jasmine867 · 07/01/2021 16:36

No I think they'd prefer a pay rise

Pigeonsareclever · 07/01/2021 16:39

It still seems unbelievable that the bursary was removed doesn’t it? A lot of potentially very good nurses prevented from training.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 07/01/2021 16:40

'I'm glad she's taken it down. She really didn't read the room well at all'

Yes and also who wants oaps struggling down slippery garden paths at night in the freezing cold to clap along and many would if they thought they had to show willing.

Rosehip10 · 07/01/2021 16:42

She claims to be disassociating from it now due to "abuse" on social media...

Redburnett · 07/01/2021 16:48

One thing I could not understand last time around was the number of NHS staff standing outside at the front of hospitals clapping themselves - surely they should have been inside caring for their patients? I certainly will not be clapping for a nurse/HCA etc to abandon their post and come outside and clap for their colleagues.

Rosehip10 · 07/01/2021 16:55

"official statement" from the organiser:

Drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls · 07/01/2021 16:56

Load of virtue signalling nonsense, certainly won’t be joining in. In the first lockdown there was always chat on our local Facebook page about folk being disgusted not everyone was out clapping. It was more of a ‘doing it to be seen’ event and I think the original message got totally lost. Annoyed me this random woman just decided it was happening again too, who’s she to say we all need to freeze our tits off in the ice and snow? No thanks
