It’s back under a new name “clap for heroes.”

OP posts:
PhilCornwall1 · 06/01/2021 17:17

@nonono1

Mainly people who are lucky to still be in paid employment. Which is my main issue with it.

Nobody denies that doctors and nurses are doingstirling work,
But, when all this is over, they will still have jobs a d a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Unlike thousands of others who's livelihoods have been completely ruined.
They are paid to care for people.
They are doing what they're meant to do.

Agree with all of this. Those of us losing everything will just be forgotten. We are Covid collateral.

Completely agree.
MrsJBradders · 06/01/2021 17:17

I won't be clapping, however I will continue to show my support by continuing to not vote for a Tory Government.

My husband is an NHS worker and he thinks it's a waste of time too - they need more money not empty claps

DuchessofDerbyshire · 06/01/2021 17:18

I see your point too @likeamillpond BUT I don't think jealousy and bitterness are helpful emotions to have. They don't benefit anyone and just cause misery.

Key workers are putting themselves at risk simply by being in the workplace. As I said, I wanted to raise the point that there are other key workers behind the scenes who are not medics, or teachers, or taxi drivers etc, who are keeping everyone safe through their work.

And there is no guarantee anyone's job is 100% secure. Some people have specialist skills and may be less affected, but they have usually worked long and hard to get there- MScs/ PhDs etc.

Rhiannon13 · 06/01/2021 17:20

No. I'll be too busy working as a carer.

If people want to show their appreciation, more careful voting in the next election would be appreciated a lot more.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 06/01/2021 17:21

'key workers are putting themselves at risk simply by being in the workplace'

They are all rightly the priority for vaccinations so will be the lowest risk.

Whoever has suggested restarting this has massively misread the mood of the nation.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 06/01/2021 17:22

No bloody way

BalconiWaferAddict · 06/01/2021 17:23

No, because it’s patronising and at a stupid time. At least do it at 6 so kids who will enjoy it can also join in and it doesn’t disturb little ones who go to bed early.

fortyfifty · 06/01/2021 17:24

God no. I didn't do it last time either. It probably helped people who are lonely to feel a connection to their neighbours. It did not help the NHS, or carers.

If they called it 'stand on your doorstep to show solidarity for your fellow human struggling in lockdown' or something then I would do it.

I'm sorry, But last time I checked Doctors, and skilled people working in science labs (yes someone said we should clap for them) are fairly secure, well paid jobs. Carers in nursing homes on the other han d? I would clap for them as they are paid peanuts and yet work all hours as well.
LoungeLizardLhama · 06/01/2021 17:24

Absolutely not. I’ll never vote conservative for carers/heroes (and for the sake of everybody else) and that is worth more than bloody claps at bed time or night shift time.

millievanille · 06/01/2021 17:26

No I won't be doing it. Healthcare workers are valiantly doing the job they chose, trained and are paid to do. They have received numerous freebies over the pandemic, whereas a lot of people have lost their jobs and receive no help whatsoever. I appreciate all the work they do, but as a previous poster said, we need action, not novelty at this point.

Timbucktime · 06/01/2021 17:27

Absolutely not

thosetalesofunexpected · 06/01/2021 17:30

Yes why not,
I didn't know about
thanks for letting me know
..
I can't understand why some people would not want to aknowledge Carers role etc for a few mins on a regular basis for a few weeks

UntamedWisteria · 06/01/2021 17:35

I think the idea was fine during the spring/summer of the first lockdown when it was daylight outside and warm, but makes no sense now.

We're tired and we've moved on.

Friendnextdoor · 06/01/2021 17:36

The bitterness against doctors, nurses and carers in this thread is astounding. We are not 'lucky to still be in paid employment' we are normal people doing a job (most of us aren't actually paid all that well actually) and now we face comments like this as if somehow nobody should show any sort of appreciation for the people who care for them... as don't we already know how lucky we are! I don't feel lucky, my colleagues and I are at breaking point and we will be suffering the effects for years to come. Some are already being diagnosed with PTSD. I really do feel for people who are struggling financially, emotionally and mentally but we are not exempt from those things. My own mum died, my colleague's husbands business has collapsed and they are having to sell their family home, countless other colleagues are working and also caring for vulnerable relatives and are quite frankly fucking terrified of taking anything home. So, no we don't want you to clap for us but we would also appreciate it if you would stop framing us as the lucky ones. We have lost relatives, homes and have still been turning up day after day to care for everyone else. And actually no, we're not alright as we are priority for the vaccine, incase nobody noticed we have been working for months with no adequate protection so it's all a bit too little, too late.

UntamedWisteria · 06/01/2021 17:39

I'd just like to add to my post, I am immensely grateful for all the work NHS workers do for us all in exceptional circumstances - and have thanked several in person or on social media. But don't feel the need to clap for them.

Apart from the 600 who died doing their job
laidbacklife · 06/01/2021 17:46

Oops voted incorrectly. No, I won’t be clapping.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 06/01/2021 17:46

I’d imagine they would appreciate more people following the rules and everyone inc children staying home as much as is possible far more than some clapping.

The last time the ones who did here seemed to be it those who flaunting the rules so very hypocritical.

notalwaysalondoner · 06/01/2021 17:47

Nope. Don't get it.

laidbacklife · 06/01/2021 17:49

Dowser:
I’d boo for Boris, wanksock, Cummings, sturgeon and drake Ford though

Lol. I’d stay up all night to take part in a national Boo for Boris.

Sewrainbow · 06/01/2021 17:50

No f ing way! Just vote for a better government or else just write hospital execs/depts/individuals to thank them personally, at least that way we get some recognition to put in our personal file and it means something....

GlomOfNit · 06/01/2021 17:51

No. No no no no no fucking NO!

it was a sweet thing to do once. It looked heartwarming and tear-jerking in Italy when they were in the depths of utter hell. It didn't really work in the same way in the UK because it was either ever-so English and awkward, or bloody OTT fireworks-and-flagwaving competitive display. Only in the UK...

It became cringeworthy really fast, particularly when it was often observed that those making the most noise were frequently to be seen having cheeky BBQ parties or extended family round or just taking the piss on a regular basis. I personally found the whole concept really crass. It was a nice feel-good thing for people to do instead of lobbying for NHS workers to be given better working conditions and for the NHS to receive far more funding. I know a few NHS workers who found it cheering (at first) but a few more who hated it.

HamishDent · 06/01/2021 17:51

No. Hideous idea the first time and no better the second.

TiddyTid · 06/01/2021 17:51

No. I will be abiding by the rules instead. Sure they'd appreciate that more
