They knew a vaccine would be the only way of getting us out of this mess. The country has already been locked down twice. Why, why, why didn’t they use this time to set up the logistics of distributing and administering these vaccines?

Why, why, why are the government allowed to decide who to prioritise to receive these vaccines when they were always going to distribute in a way that benefits them. Surely any government with an ounce of realism would be self aware enough to realise that they would make this vaccine distribution a political decision and instead allow the decision to be made by an independent third party who can distribute it in a way that would allow the country to get back to work. Instead it’s likely that months and months down the line we’ll all be forced to go back to work despite still be unprotected.

I have visions of pensioners being able to swan off on holiday over the summer while the workers of the country will still be unable to.

It’s an absolute fucking farce. Watching that press conference last night just finally made it snap for me - they genuinely don’t know what they’re doing at all

This thread is right up there with someone I saw on fb yesterday quoting Katie Hopkins as a reliable scientific source.

Spot on @Mumski45

What’s the point of vaccinating the low risk population, the nhs will still be fucked and they wouldn’t be able to lift restrictions. I own a small business, it’s bloody terrifying right now, I’m also cev and have at least 10 million people above me in the queue, but it’s clear that they need to vaccinate those to lift pressure on the nhs.

jessstan1 · 06/01/2021 09:01

I thought NHS workers and care staff were going to have the vaccine first. I'm sure that was said on the news.

Poor old Scarlet1521 and 2020 with your reasoned posts.

We're still in the grip of a wave of emotion (primarily anger and resentment over perceived advantages) overwhelming reason.

I keep waiting for that tide to go out ...

Haggertyjane · 06/01/2021 09:02

We're doing the best in Europe and the USA for rolling out the vaccine, so what's the issue?

randomer · 06/01/2021 09:02

Could the government refer to other occasions and other countries and try to learn something? I can appreciate this is unprecedented and other places are diffferent geographically, but there must be some common ground.
Why don't they use what is already in place instead of constantly reinventing the wheel?

Mulhollandmagoo · 06/01/2021 09:02

@the80sweregreat

The working population should get the vaccine first. Makes sense to me but I'm sure someone will come along and say I'm wrong!
Completely agree!!!!!

NHS/care staff first, followed by other key workers such as school staff, supermarket workers etc. followed by everyone else in employment

MadameBlobby · 06/01/2021 09:02

@BathFullOfEels

I don’t see it as hating older people at all flaxmeadow. They can isolate much more easily than a lot of workers. It may sound callous but I’d prefer an 80yo to have to spend a year inside than a 5yo. Decisions have to be made and that’s one that I think, honestly, most people would make.

I don’t understand why we’re prioritising nursing/ residential home patients. If the staff were immunised and the patients aren’t allowed visitors anyway there is no reason they should catch COVID.

It’s because these are the groups at greatest risk of overwhelming hospitals and the NHS.
EasterIssland · 06/01/2021 09:03

@Ridcully82 I agree with part of your comment but not the wfh bit, sorry but some of us wfh still care about others and can see why the vaccination order is right. most of those that dont agree with the list are most likely the ones furloughed so that they can go back to work (which I dont blame wanting to work...) please dont add more "hate" towards other set of people

randomer · 06/01/2021 09:03

Gladys and Ernie are people, human beings and as such have rights. This is not the way forward.

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2021 09:04

@CarolEffingBaskin

Agree, OP. I've still not seen a single person effectively explain why the fuck we are vaccinating 90-100 year olds and isolating small children. It's fucking insane. "Reduce NHS pressure." Right, because 90-100 year olds are going to swan off to a long, healthy existence now aren't they Hmm Glad we fucked up an entire generation's education and saved Gladys and Ernie so they can have their heart attack next year instead!
I would suggest that’s because you’ve already made your mind up.

Do you really not understand why the nhs is under pressure now? And why to reduce the pressure those people who are at most risk of ending up there are the ones who need vaccinating first?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/01/2021 09:04

I feel properly disgruntled and fed up. I'm 60 and vulnerable because of health problems that are genetic and not caused by me, I work with covid patients in a community medical professional capacity in their own homes so I'm at very high risk of catching it. I'm full time.
I've asked time and again when I can get the vaccine and have been told we don't know so I go out to work every day never knowing if I will come home with it.
Lateral flow testing which I have at home is totally unreliable and doesn't stop me getting it.
My manager says it won't be any time soon.
I'm very tempted to just jack it in and retire early because my elderly parents rely on me to take care of them and my adult DS has type 1 diabetes.

Trickyboy · 06/01/2021 09:04

@Mumski45

Why is it that seemingly well educated people seem unable to think this through. The hospitals are full of mainly older and vulnerable people who are blocking the nhs from being able to serve the rest of the population. Once this group is vaccinated the hospital situation will ease and life can start to go back to normal whilst the rest of the population is vaccinated. We will get back to normal much more quickly this way. If the working population is vaccinated first and the vaccine doesn't stop transmission only serious illness then the hospitals will be full for longer. The point of all measures is to relieve the nhs not stop working age people having a relatively minor illness.

You are right to be angry with this government about many things but this isn't one of them.

My God Mumski45 THANK YOU ! Was beginning to think that MN had been taken over by the hard of thinking.

Of course those most at risk of dying need vaccinations first ! What the hell would the point be of vaccinating the 'working well' with the hospitals still overwhelmed with the elderly and routine nhs work having to be shelved.

The working well do not represent a threat to the NHS if they get the virus.
I also think the Govt has been massively incompetent in its handling of the crisis - but on the order of those to be vaccinated, in order to release the pressure on the NHS , they have it spot on.

BathFullOfEels · 06/01/2021 09:04

Again, I’m really not ‘hating’ anyone.

Thanks for explaining it, it does make sense when you put it like that. I still don’t understand why the hell they are looking for people to administer the vaccine now, rather than sorting it at any time over the last 10 months though.

Hoppinggreen · 06/01/2021 09:05

I imagine things could be speeded (sped?) up quite a bit if Johnson and his cronies weren’t wondering how they could make money out of it.
That’s been the primary motivation of this govt every step of the way so far
Israel has already vaccinated 1 in 6 of the population, We had a good start by approving the first vaccine so quickly but we will soon fall behind I’m sure.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/01/2021 09:06

Oh yes and meanwhile everyone in nursing homes with dementia locally have had theirs, who the hell is going to look after them if the staff catch it. We have 8 staff off with covid in my department and are on our knees day after day.

OrchestraOfWankery · 06/01/2021 09:06

It's alarming how some people still don't understand why the demographics most likely to become seriously ill and need hospital treatment are the ones who are prioritised for a vaccine.

RedToothBrush · 06/01/2021 09:07

If you vaccinate groups 1 - 4, you have covered people who make up 88% of all deaths.

If you vaccinate 20 people in group one, you save one life compared to vaccinating 47000 people who are aged 0 - 50.

Remember that those in the top groups also represent the majority of hospitalisations so those vaccinations also stop the pressure on hospitals which vaccinating younger working age groups wouldn't achieve.

I’m just angry now
Cheerios444 · 06/01/2021 09:08

Your disdain for ‘pensioners’ Is horrific...some pensioners may be ‘swanning’ off on holidays but pensioners like my parents who live in an area with over 1000 casss per 100,000 will feel safe enough to go to the shops to buy milk without thinking they could die every time they go

Your post is heartless OP

Porcupineintherough · 06/01/2021 09:08

Good job that care workers are high up on the priority ladder for vaccination then @Shehasadiamondinthesky Confused

Laufeythejust · 06/01/2021 09:08

I don’t care who gets it first as long as it’s lots of people and consistently. I worry specifying exactly who can and can’t have it means that there are slots not being filled because older people aren’t always as mobile/ able to go at strange times. 24 hour vaccination hubs need to be set up, pubs and restaurants are offering their facilities for free that are central with large fridges. They need to identify everyone who can vaccinate and get them on board too. I’m sure more is going on behind the scenes than what we can see but I just feel like we are dragging our feet a bit.

Ohthatsgreat · 06/01/2021 09:08

I don’t care who gets it first or in what order, the experts can decide that. I want to see 7 day a week vaccination programme to get as many people vaccinated as possible. I think most people are more concerned that we will not vaccinate fast enough. Lives will be lost in the coming weeks because the govt insists on direct control and command from the centre. Whereas pushing these vaccines out to pharmacies and community vaccination hubs would increase the speed. We are just going far too slow.

So elderly people in care home can be kept in solitary confinement and not see friends and family for months on end because they are not real people with feelings and sentience but a 5 year olds development will be DEVASTATED because it can't go to soft play. Fuck off. Really fuck the fuck off, then fuck off some more.
Pyewhacket · 06/01/2021 09:09

Sorry but you're an idiot.

HelloMissus · 06/01/2021 09:10

It’s amazing how we’ve been told again and and again how serious Covid is for EVERYONE.
There was that doctor on the radio recently saying that ICU was full of fit people younger than him ie early 50s. That he’s seen families ‘wiped out’ - no family is realistically all over 80 are they?

So if that is true, then why this roll out?
Or is that not true - hence the vaccine roll out makes sense.

Ditto long Covid.
Either there are going to be millions of fit healthy people rendered permanently ill by this virus - who all need a vaccination as much as the next man, or that’s not a serious next and they don’t.
