They knew a vaccine would be the only way of getting us out of this mess. The country has already been locked down twice. Why, why, why didn’t they use this time to set up the logistics of distributing and administering these vaccines?

Why, why, why are the government allowed to decide who to prioritise to receive these vaccines when they were always going to distribute in a way that benefits them. Surely any government with an ounce of realism would be self aware enough to realise that they would make this vaccine distribution a political decision and instead allow the decision to be made by an independent third party who can distribute it in a way that would allow the country to get back to work. Instead it’s likely that months and months down the line we’ll all be forced to go back to work despite still be unprotected.

I have visions of pensioners being able to swan off on holiday over the summer while the workers of the country will still be unable to.

It’s an absolute fucking farce. Watching that press conference last night just finally made it snap for me - they genuinely don’t know what they’re doing at all

I’ve emailed my local MP this morning, which I’ve never done before, to say how I despair at the lack of progress for the vaccine and to raise it with his Senior leaders (Conservative). I’d encourage others to do the same. I just felt like I couldn’t sit back and watch this shit show any more.

@Northernsoulgirl45

Well done OP fir listening to the reasoned arguments on this thread. Other posters should be ashamed of themselves though. The hatred towards the elderly on Munsnet lately us staggering.
Not as staggering as the complete disregard for children.

I can't believe that you are all happy with your kids out of education for the best of a year. It's utterly fucking ridiculous.

pleasefeedthecat · 06/01/2021 10:48

The unfortunate truth is that most NHS resources are used to keep the very sick and old alive, so they need to continue doing so. They've backed themselves against a wall. The vaccination programme is designed to facilitate this. Younger members of the population and children are collateral damage.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 10:48

@feelingverylazytoday don't you love it when people post something to back their argument without actually checking the facts first

Chloemol · 06/01/2021 10:48

@BathFullOfEels

And the vaccination won’t stop people catching it, or passing it on, just make symptoms milder, and if enough vaccine is taken up then provide herd immunity

And until enough have been vaccinated, whichever way it’s done SD etc will remain in place

bluetongue · 06/01/2021 10:49

All those saying the vaccine doesn’t stop you getting Covid, how do you know this? My understanding is that the current situation is that it is currently unknown if the vaccine stops transmission.

DecemberSun · 06/01/2021 10:50

The elderly and the vulnerable have to have it first or the NHS will be overwhelmed. I don't understand why people are too thick to realise that.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 10:50

@pleasefeedthecat collateral damage don't be silly
What do you expect them to do with old people not treat them its not about being backed into a corner , its about being humane.
End if life care is also given to make people more comfortable and less pain , what do you suggest ?

feelingverylazytoday · 06/01/2021 10:50
@feelingverylazytoday don't you love it when people post something to back their argument without actually checking the facts first
Yep, they just show themselves up really.

Jaxhog · 06/01/2021 10:51

Problem is, that there a lot more younger people than elderly or vulnerable so it would take much longer. While we were doing this, we would still have to be in lockdown. If we don't innoculate the elderly and vulnerable, many will die. Not only that, but they will fill up the hospital beds and the NHS will be in crisis. There would be no room for ANY other treatment and a lot of other people would die.

There is no ideal choice.

tillyandmilly · 06/01/2021 10:51

Eh I am 52 female I am still working full time as I have done for the last 30 odd years and will be doing so until I am 67! Not many people get to retire in their 50’s! I would like the jab as well please

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 10:52

@bluetongue most people are saying its not proven yet so the person who suggested just careworkers have it but not the residents , it was pointed out that they do not know if it stops transmission yet so it would be dangerous to go down this route as it is not proven.

Thatsnotmynamename · 06/01/2021 10:52

@BathFullOfEels Yep, you're absolutely right. All those running governments across the world and those with the highest qualifications in science and mathematics across the world are completely wrong with what they agree on being the best order to roll out the vaccine in order to cut the death rates, ease the pressure on health services so that people with cancer, heart attacks, etc are able to get the treatment they need AND get us out of lockdowns as soon as possible. Could you shout a little louder though because I don't think they're listening for some strange reason. I mean why shouldn't they listen to someone who completely lacks the intelligence to link the oldest and most vulnerable in society being in hospital for weeks (whether they live or die) with the reason why we're all in lockdowns.

All those in agreement can deny as much as you like. But what you want is to sacrifice the elderly and vulnerable. I don't disagree that this is disastrous for many many businesses and working people, with ramifications for everyone's future. But those of you who think you should be able to play God with lives and decide that 80 is a good enough innings, or that someone who's had an organ transplant in their 40s, but doesn't work in a key roll, doesn't deserve the vaccine before you are absolutely disgusting. And I really hope that once you hit this magic 'elderly age' you think back and remember that you were happy for those people to just receive a bit of oxygen if they must and be allowed to die at home, because if you want the young workforce vaccinated and leave elderly and vulnerable until last as they're not productive in society, then you have to accept that the elderly and CV shouldn't be admitted to hospital when they catch it - because that is what is the cause of the lockdown.

Almostslimjim · 06/01/2021 10:53

@PurpleDaisies

Not everyone will be vaccinated, the government are deliberately letting infection rates peak before they start each lockdown to ensure there is as much natural immunity as there is from the vaccines, because it's cheaper.

This is utter nonsense. Are the not vaccinating people who have had covid?

Yes, total nonsense!

We know natural immunity doesn't last very long now. We will vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as we can.

rosinavera · 06/01/2021 10:53

@BathFullOfEels

I don’t see it as hating older people at all flaxmeadow. They can isolate much more easily than a lot of workers. It may sound callous but I’d prefer an 80yo to have to spend a year inside than a 5yo. Decisions have to be made and that’s one that I think, honestly, most people would make.

I don’t understand why we’re prioritising nursing/ residential home patients. If the staff were immunised and the patients aren’t allowed visitors anyway there is no reason they should catch COVID.

This actually does sound callous! The elderly have spent their whole working lives contributing to the economy and now it's the country's turn to look after them.
Jaxhog · 06/01/2021 10:53

I can't believe that you are all happy with your kids out of education for the best of a year. It's utterly fucking ridiculous.

Of course, we aren't! But surely this is better than thousands more people dying?

OrchestraOfWankery · 06/01/2021 10:54

@garlictwist

Let's not bring the bloody war into it. I don't think there's many people left who were alive in the war, never mind fought in it.
It's on every thread discussing people aged 60+ GrinConfused
nonono1 · 06/01/2021 10:55

The hatred towards elderly people on here is mind blowing

No hatred from me, but I’ve lost my job, I’m losing my home. I’m at rock bottom and there’s nothing left for me to give. It’s up to someone else now, I’m out.

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/01/2021 10:55

What do you mean lack of progress? Why are you despairing? What shit show? I am genuinely curious.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 10:55

@seriouslymole you do understand they would be out for longer if we don't vaccinate the people most likely to die or be seriously ill first
And it hasn't been a year out of school and by doing vaccinations as they are they may be able to go back sooner than doing any other way , I can't believe after reading this thread people still don't get it

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 10:57

@Ponypizzy what lack of progress we are doing better than most at vaccinating its the supply of vaccine that os limiting how many can be done ? What do you expect can be done about that

Topseyt · 06/01/2021 10:57

I wonder if there is a private option

It isn't being made available privately in the UK. Only via the NHS.

We have vaccinated more people than any other European country. I’m not a fan of our Government but as far as vaccination is concerned we’re not doing badly.
nonono1 · 06/01/2021 10:59

Younger members of the population and children are collateral damage.

Yes, that’s what me and my family are - collateral. We and probably millions of others like us have lost everything for the greater good and nobody gives a shit. Maybe they will wake up to it when they realize there’s nobody left to fund the NHS though.

81Byerley · 06/01/2021 11:00

@Haggertyjane I read your post out to my husband. Why did your (Very good) post bring a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat?
