To expect to be able to choose not to have the vaccine without being made to feel uncomfortable? *edited by MNHQ at OP's request*

Risking a flaming here:

I work in the NHS not patient facing. Our Trust has said all non frontline staff are likely to be offered the vaccine next week. (1000 staff have already been done which is brilliant!)

I'm a fit and healthy 39 year old with no underlying health conditions. I am not an anti vaxxer however I am concerned about the lack of long term research that has understandably not been able to be done on the vaccine and have made an informed decision that I probably won't have it. I'd prefer my dose to go to someone more vulnerable. I believe this should be my choice.
My colleague is 62 and is all for having the vaccine which is great. I said I probably wouldn't as it doesn't affect transmission only the severity of the illness. Now she isn't speaking to me.
AIBU?

(Also given the amount of setbacks and govt lies/omissions in the last 10 months I wouldn't be at all surprised if the vaccine isn't the silver bullet we've been told to expect. The way things are going I can see is in the same situation in 12 months time).

@SallySouthLondon excellent post, wholeheartedly agree.

SallySouthLondon · 05/01/2021 21:13

What evidence do you require samphire ? That the average age of death from covid is 82 or the risk to young people is actually tiny? Air pollution contributes to around 40,000 deaths per year in the Uk so if you are looking at preserving life at all costs, stop drinking , smoking, eating junk food, driving and basically being a complete hypocrite.

Life is finite, we all die - there are plenty more things to worry about of all ages than covid so support those that wish to be supported and allow people to have autonomy over their own bodies able to live their lives in a sensible fashion. Your posts along with ice ice baby or whatever she's called criticising those who are exercising their own rights over their own bodies look like you are having some kind of fit online fuelled by rage and mental health issues.

Thank you @SallySouthLondon Thanks

Nicely filleted 😁

But doesn't cover the spleen venting in your previous post.

SallySouthLondon · 05/01/2021 21:59

There is no " spleen venting" Samphire, I just dislike utter hypocrisy in people. In your previous posts you have supported the various measures such as vaccination to protect the NHS calling anyone wary of vaccines selfish but having worked in healthcare for 25 years, the biggest challenge we face are people not taking personal responsibility for their own health over issues such as smoking, alcohol dependency and obesity for eg in the latter issue which you openly admit.

Statistically you are far more likely to require hospital treatment than a slimmer person who doesn't take a covid vaccine so it takes away your credibility somewhat particularly when engaging in a tirade of abuse or at least encouraging it coming from someone who claims " to love you " named after a failed male rapper. I find your stance disingenuous and hypocritical .. perhaps time to shine the spotlight of scrutiny at your own life and how you can lessen your own chances of causing issues for the NHS by taking up beds in future with your own lifestyle choices. It's called diet and exercise

BaubleBubble · 05/01/2021 22:05

YANBU
You are not patient-facing and will be unlikely to benefit personally from having the vaccine given your age.
As long as you’re not shouting about it and putting other people off that’s fine.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/01/2021 22:09

You have some of that wrong... quite a lot in fact. Anyone reading back through the thread can see that... You have mistakenly attributed some things to me... no big deal, there are a lot of posters here.

As for my obesity... surely with your vaunted 25 years in health you can think of a few things, physiological and physical, that could make it difficult to take up your cry of 'diet and exercise'?

I'll give you one clue... exercise could render me incapable of functioning, leave me bed ridden.

But I am guessing you just want to shout at someone....so help yourself!

Gingernaut · 05/01/2021 22:12

YABU

Get the vaccination.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/01/2021 22:12

Oh and what is is the "claims to love you / failed rapper" comment? I have no idea what you are talking about there. That just seems to be a few words thrown together nonsensically.

If you mean my user name has some hidden meaning... it's a brand of gin!

There is no one " shouting" other than a few people shaking in rage having a breakdown online for someone not wishing to have a vaccine.

Your personal health is your concern, but I do see numerous views particularly on social media demanding people do various things to qualify what they regard as "socially acceptable". One of the most ridiculous was a picture of an obese male I saw yesterday holding a cigarette in one hand, pint in the other who was frothing at the mouth in rage like a rabid dog on social media at people putting a strain on the NHS by not "following the rules". You tend to find these characters, many often appearing online denouncing what others are doing put the biggest strain on all services compared to others who wish people to take accountability for their own decisions and own health

The ice ice babe/baby poster was a song from a one hit wonder in 1990.. probably before your time
2020canfuckitself · 05/01/2021 22:21

I feel the same. I'm really concerned with how fast this vaccine has been pushed through. I'm going to do my research before deciding

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/01/2021 22:22

😁 step round it!!!

I can see you won't respond to direct questions about what you have posted. I'll leave you to it.

Good night.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/01/2021 22:25

Oh! So not me then!

It's nice you think it was before my time 🙂

Now I know the answer to that I really will be off!

lightand · 05/01/2021 22:25

@2020canfuckitselfTrouble with doing all the research in the world on this, is that there isnt 7 or 8 years worth of the long term study.

PolarExpressislate · 05/01/2021 22:28

I'm frontline NHS and ECV and an not having a rushed through vaccine. I've given enough injections and done enough training over the years to know this is not right and extremely questionable.

Incrediblytired · 05/01/2021 22:31

It’s tough and I think people deliberately misunderstand each other for arguments sake. Most people I know who are having the vaccine just want to get on with their lives and the vaccine should enable that. If everyone declines then we are in permanent lockdown or facing awful scenes of the nhs sinking ...

CantSayJack · 05/01/2021 22:36

Your body, your choice.
I’m not an anti-vaxxer but who the hell do people think they are trying to bully OP and others into having the vaccine.
None of you know what the future holds or if the vaccine will be the magic bullet it is made out to be. Zero proof of long-term outcome so leave off. I’ll have it because I CHOOSE to, not because I’m FORCED to.

SpringTime2020 · 05/01/2021 22:39

@littlepattilou - well, unless we want to scrap informed consent - that's not going to happen is it?

boogiebogie · 05/01/2021 23:49

Not unreasonable at all. Your body... It doesn't stop the spread so people are talking utter bollocks.

MadameBlobby · 05/01/2021 23:53

@JamieLeesCurtains

If you want to be special, you have to be prepared to be treated specially.

Or, if you want to behave in a different way from others, you have to be prepared to be treated differently from others.

Do you get it now?

I feel like this about all approved vaccines btw.

This

You are being a bit of a plonker OP

And as for this gem

Also given the amount of setbacks and govt lies/omissions in the last 10 months I wouldn't be at all surprised if the vaccine isn't the silver bullet we've been told to expect. The way things are going I can see is in the same situation in 12 months time)

The situation isn’t going to be helped by people like you not doing your bit.

Giving injections for a living hardly makes you a qualified research scientist.

bumbleymummy · 06/01/2021 00:44

Yanbu. You have the right to make the decision for yourself. This isn’t about herd immunity anyway - it’s about protecting the more vulnerable and taking pressure off the NHS.

trulydelicious · 06/01/2021 00:45

@JamieLeesCurtains

What is this bollocks that some of you regurgitate?

So one should be punished for thinking differently?

colouringindoors · 06/01/2021 00:47

Yabu. For all the good reasons others have said. Get over yourself.
