Don't understand the once a day rule. Never have. A little afternoon walk keeps me sane.

Moan moan moan.

Garden centres, as another poster said, get you doing socially distanced.ventilated exercise at home. And exercise fresh air for older people. Also, they are low contact.in terms of staff, most.people drive.there rather than public transport. Considering a lot of food is inessential, and to buy it means going.into.a relatively.unsafe environment, keeping garden centres open.encourages people who might otherwise not.go out at all.(sedentary is the killer for old.people) to go out and walk around a bit safely.

Bairnsmum05 · 04/01/2021 22:54

You must be talking about the rules in England? I'm sure in Scotland there is no limit on the frequency of exercise?

Fingfoxes · 04/01/2021 22:54

The people saying that no-one is enforcing this are wrong. The police find it very easy to visit countryside and hang around the car parks issuing fines to people they don't consider 'local' enough - this is tricky where I live since it is on a county border and does worry me that I can drive 5 miles to another county and get in trouble or 15 miles in my own county and not get in trouble.

Horizons83 · 04/01/2021 22:54

Wait until the actual legislation is published. I suspect there will be no mention of once a day.

Wheresmykimchi · 04/01/2021 22:55

@Papoy

Just because there is no one to police it, it doesn't mean people should break the rules....

Isnt that why we keep ending up square one over and over again !!!

Quite
ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 04/01/2021 22:56

I don't think the police are going to come hammering on your door because Molly May from down the way phoned them and told them
You'd been out twice.

TopBants · 04/01/2021 22:56

I'm going by what the need said- 'ideally' once a day. Doesn't sound like law to me.

And yes, I shall drive to exercise as long as the car park is open. It's within walking distance, but hard to get to walking with a toddler and newborn!

TopBants · 04/01/2021 22:57

*The news, not the need 🤦

There was a link on the previous page - wasn't that correct?
HarryLimeFoxtrot · 04/01/2021 22:58

An MP in Scotland was arrested for culpable and reckless behaviour. I know many people who have been fined.

For travelling on public transport whilst having Covid. Not for going out for a second walk. The risks aren’t even remotely comparable.

...I didn't mention the risks.

I was referring to PP saying no one is policing or fining.

A rule break is a rule break. Try living on the border.

mum2jakie · 04/01/2021 22:59

It's in the updated guidance, specifying exercise no more than once per day:

www.gov.uk/guidance/national-lockdown-stay-at-home

DuchessofHastings1 · 04/01/2021 22:59

Yes its breaking the rules, yes no one will be counting and no one will police it....but it's just yet another example of contradictory rules, that donrlt make any sense in terms of risk, so yet more people will fling their hands up the air and not follow rules. Same old same ol

IfTheSockFits · 04/01/2021 23:01

@Jangle33

Honestly please tell me they are closing garden centres. How can they be open and schools closed? It’s not ok on any level
The last time they closed the garden centres in the first lockdown they had to throw away many millions of plants. They are seasonal, and need to be sold and planted at the right time of year. I believe the cost to the horticultural industry was about £200 million.

You can't just put living plants in a box on a shelf and lock them in a warehouse for a couple of months. They are perishable and have a short shelf life.

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2021 23:03

Yes but you’re allowed to leave if it’s essential and if it’s essential for your mental health then you can go for a second walk.

What they are trying to do is stop everyone going out all the time ans mingling.

Eckhart · 04/01/2021 23:03

Animal care is essential care. We did all this at the first lockdown. Boris made sure that the guidelines were very clear for horse owners way before the guidelines were published for dog owners. So his mates were all sorted, while the rest of us had to tell our dogs to tie a knot in it for about 3 weeks.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 04/01/2021 23:03

It is impossible to police going out for exercise more than once per day. Especially as there are several other permitted reasons for leaving home. It wouldn’t be in the public interest to even try and police it. I will continue to go out 3 times per day. I literally have no shits left to give about the alleged legality or otherwise of this.

This. What is being discussed and shared is guidance, not law - not rules. Just guidance. "Should", not "must". These words aren't selected by accident.
Letsskidaddle · 04/01/2021 23:05

@notanothertakeaway "Jeez, the pandemic escalates, govt brings in ever tighter restrictions, and people on this thread are already encouraging OP to break the rules and take extra walks! No wonder the virus continues to spread. FFS"

Exactly this! What will it take for certain members of our communities to take it seriously?

Every single person who wilfully breaks the rules, or bends them to suit themselves, is responsible for this shit show.

It's not the Government ballsing things up, it's the individuals that REPEATEDLY think they are too special and too important to observe 'the rules'. Yes, the Govt could have done things differently but they've not. They are asking ALL OF US to work
together to tackle this. They are not asking or encouraging people who don't feel like complying to do whatever they want - that decision is one that anyone who breaks the rules chooses to make.

I'm pretty sure we are all at the end of our tethers with this, everyone's mental health will have been affected, we are all missing friends, family and 'normality'. Every parent will be struggling with home edding and working. Loads of us have lost our incomes. Lifestyles for the majority have been impacted.

Some are making the best of it and complying, in the hope that the more we comply, the sooner it will be done. And some are completely ignoring the guidance and laws to do as they please.

For the love of God I wish everyone would just comply: put up and shut up so we can move forward. It's already taken far longer than it needed to.

And please, for anyone who is really struggling, reach out. There is help available - help for debt caused by this, help to gain new employment, your local church can help with food bank referrals, Samaritans and similar can help with depression and loneliness, Women's aid can help if you are in an abusive household.

Bending and breaking the rules will not help in the long run.

Quartz2208 · 04/01/2021 23:05

Yes this is the rule that irritates me the most as I just dont see how

a 20 min walk before home school starts for the kids
a 20 minute run for me (which sadly is my limit) to get a break and clear my head from homeschooling and wfh
a 20 min walk to end the day for the kids so we can have structure to the school day with a walk as normal at the beginning and end

Is a bigger risk that us going on an hour long walk around the local park which is a vaccine hub but is the easiest place to go for our alloted exercise time. For me this seems a much bigger risk

Underhisi · 04/01/2021 23:05

Just go for 2 walks. We will go for as many as needed to keep us sane and ds not hurting anyone. I will also be driving to them and I give no fucks what the guidance says.

Great. But everyone thinking like you is why we are in this position.
RincewindsHat · 04/01/2021 23:06

@AliceAbsolum

Once a day and can't drive to exercise. You shouldn't leave your village, town or part of the city.
Not this again...NOWHERE does it say you cannot drive to exercise. Stop making things up.
Wheresmykimchi · 04/01/2021 23:07

@PicsinRed

In Scotland it's now legal. hopefully England follows suit so the Im alright jack's can be pulled up and we can get out of this mess.

Poppingnostopping · 04/01/2021 23:07

Is it correct that you can go out for exercise with one other person who isn't in your household in a public place, so you could walk with a local friend? Just checking.
