I’m just so fed up. It feels like Groundhog Day now. Worried about business, worried about ds’s schooling. Doing dry January too - thinking about scraping that tbh. How’s everyone else doing?

My first thought was "why the fuck am I doing Dry January in lockdown" but then I decided that this lockdown isn't going to be like the last and yes I did drink a lot more than usual but reigned it in over the summer

I'm dropping my standards for home schooling (I've ordered some age appropriate KS workbooks, we'll do what we can of the online learning but we'll read lots, play / learn new board and card games and we'll get outside everyday!)

I'm dropping my standards with cleaning. I'll keep things clean but there'll be mess with 3 kids at home. I'm not going to break my back to clean up after them (I'm working on them doing it themselves!)

I'm going to take some annual leave over this lockdown. I cancelled all my Easter and May 2020 leave so luckily have loads but taking annual leave will alleviate some guilt about work and allow me to fully focus on the kids

Last time I ate too much, drank too much and stressed way too much. Not this time!!!

That sounds like a wise decision, I wish I could do the same but it's not an option here.

@Flaxmeadow

I'm pretty certain that people who can't pay their mortgages

Your mortgage is your affair. Your gamble. If interest rates go up then that will at least be controlled

If you think for one second the hardest hit won't be renters, public sector or private, then you're very much deluded. Think yourself lucky. You might come out of this , renting, with a few grand. That's more than most us will

due to lockdown restrictions will lose their homes if they are repossessed by their mortgage lenders.

Why would they repossess? It's their asset too. Why would banks cut their own nose off to spite their face?

Unless you know something about a new government policy that no-one else does?

You have been given leeway on payments. Generous leeway

Are mortgage payment holidays going to be a feature of this latest lockdown

They already are

Why will mortgage lenders repossess homes if people don't pay their mortgages?

Do you live in cloud cuckoo land?

Or some parallel world where mortgage lenders just randomly agree to people not paying their mortgages? Have you ever had a mortgage and seen the terms and conditions?

Mortgage lenders make their profits from the interest paid on the loan, the capital repayment part (if there is one) is a very small part of the payment. If mortgage lenders aren't getting their profit, it makes financial sense for them to sell the property and gain income from that, rather than tolerate a non-payer living in the property, preventing them from doing anything with it.

I'm really astonished that someone can actually make up something like this. Its so far removed from the reality that people face day in day out, that I don't know where to start.

Do you actually live in Eutopia? If so, where is it and how do you get there? Do people give you free houses for life and all?

Ah well - another Press Conf at 5pm today.....

@bluebeck

Ah well - another Press Conf at 5pm today.....
I've come to dread these press conferences.

What now? Vaccine isn't working and we will have to stay locked down for an entire year and reassess next year?

Schools suspended til next autumn?

inquietant · 05/01/2021 12:24

Is it the financial aspects today?

AgnesNaismith · 05/01/2021 12:39

Na....if financial he would have Rishi with him. First he’s going to scare the shit out of everyone.

Flaxmeadow · 05/01/2021 13:12

Why will mortgage lenders repossess homes if people don't pay their mortgages?

Why wouldn't someone be able to pay their mortgage?

Sobeyondthehills posted:

"He is being condemned about closing Primary Schools late, because rather than going on TV and saying schools are safe and allowing thousands of children up and down the country to mix, he could have said, lets put a hold on schools for Monday, so that we can have a look at the figures tomorrow, because teachers and headteachers are saying it might not be safe. He could have done his whole speech that he did tonight, yesterday and parents up and down the country would still be in the same position, with the knowledge that their child hadn't mixed with another 30 bubbles."

@Sobeyondthehills I agree, that would have been a much better way of handling it. We've no way of knowing exactly why he prevaricated in that way, but it made the blow worse when he delivered the news after one day of schools reopening, then parents realised that they had to rethink their plans. In a sense though, the schools were/are safe for primary school children, as they seem to have a natural immunity and the cases in that age group are extremely rare. Also, although primary school kids might transmit the virus to their parents, most of those parents would be in their 20s or 30s, so again, would not be at high risk. So, considering the upheaval that shutting primary schools causes, due to childcare issues, I can see why the govt hesitated, but to imply they have blood on their hands is stretching the point. Parents of young children need to be aware they could be carrying Covid, whether they're in school or not, and older parents, along with grandparents, need to be extra cautious around young children, regardless of whether they are attending school.

Sobeyondthehills · 05/01/2021 14:48

@Defenbaker its not just age thats a factor though, its health implications, you can say need to be extra cautious, but how many parents are going to look at their 6 year old crying and say sorry, need to keep 2 meters away till someone can take a look at the giant knife in your leg?

Its a silly example, but hopefully you will get my meaning, certainly in my case its not if (or when) we get it, its who we may pass it on to.

Defenbaker · 05/01/2021 17:05

@Sobeyondthehills Yes, that's a very valid point, it must be so hard in situations where a small child is looking for comfort and wants a hug from adults who are fearful of catching the virus. The whole thing is nightmarish on so many levels. I wish everyone well in the weeks ahead, whatever struggles they're going through. Stay safe everyone.

Caspah · 05/01/2021 21:33

There are people crying out on this thread that they no longer want to/can't live this type of life, but it seems to be largely overlooked.

On the other hand, you've got Jacob Rees-Mogg travelling 15 miles (and presumably back again) from tier 3 to tier 4 (on Sunday) to attend the 'only old rite mass available ... which meets his religious oblications.' Obviously a government Cabinet members' religion (as long as they're Christian) overrides their own government's laws/rules.
