I’m just so fed up. It feels like Groundhog Day now. Worried about business, worried about ds’s schooling. Doing dry January too - thinking about scraping that tbh. How’s everyone else doing?

Hotels closed from tier 3 weren’t they?

@CuriousaboutSamphire

tootsy my human rights still exist. My civil liberties have been curtailed.

Currently I have lost nothing and there are checks and measures being put in place to ensure that my civil liberties are not curtailed for longer than necessary... many well respected legal minds have been working on that for about a year.

If you want to discuss what rights we have lost, permanently not temporarily, at least try to identify them correctly.

And try to remember that with rights come responsibilities... and this is a time to be aware of our responsibilities rather than standing, bantam proud, on our perceived rights.

Actually, the "many well respected legal minds" you refer to are the government legal service who draft legislation ie they do what they are told to do by government. I'm not sure they're in the same leagues as actual expert lawyers in human rights law and Supreme Court judges.

Now obviously they can't be too outspoken, although Lord Sumption (often referred to as the cleverest lawyer in Britain) has been

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/nov/04/england-lockdown-peril-young-people-mental-health

but there are many, many legal articles being written by constitutional and human rights lawyers absolutely disagreeing with the continual lockdowns and breaches of human rights, mainly because they don't meet the ECHR derogation conditions. There are some supporting the restrictions as well, but I'd lay a firm bet that a fair proportion of those have their eyes on jobs as government advisors...

The lost civil liberties are quite clearly listed in the ECHR, which is easily googled, if you want to be more aware of what is being taken from you.

Generally though the idea is that the ECHR was passed after WW2 to prevent the abuses of freedom by communist countries occurring in Western Europe, and that rights should only be suspended for short periods of imminent threat to the safety of the entire population as a whole.

I'm feeling upbeat and optimistic for some reason. Denial, no doubt.

marshmallowfluffy · 04/01/2021 22:22

How are they going to ramp up the vaccinations ?
Presumably getting jabbed at Tesco or Boots is going to be a small fraction of the NHS personnel currently doing jabs? I would love to be told otherwise

Exams now need to be fucking abolished to make way for modular assessment and/or testing - so fucking unfair on our youngsters in so many different ways - enough now - I have one in yr 10 and one that did A Levels in 2020 😷

@angelhorror

Suicide is an option people are taking,

@Flaxmeadow

Its not Horseshit, have a look at #ExcludedUK to see how many people have thought they had no other option.

Its a desperate situiation and I can bet for many people on here, saying what a hard job the government have had and how this is a necessary evil are not the ones who are in the ExcludedUK group or the ones stuck in flats or the ones living on the poverty line.

And the thing is due to the cuts over the last ten years (and so much more) mental health services in most areas are down to the bare bone and you get stuck on a waiting list for 6 months plus.

whattodo2019 · 04/01/2021 22:27

@CuriousaboutSamphire

It's not Boris

It isn't the dickheads flouting the rules.

This would have happened whatever precautions were taken. We were told so last March. It's a virus doing what a virus does.

What has NOT happened is a total overwhelming of the NHS. What has happened is a slowing down if the rate of infection. What has happened is some societal changes that have helped slow down infection rates.

Many countries with variations on a lockdown theme are experiencing the same changes.

The GOOD NEWS is that vaccines are already being rolled out. There is something proactive that can now be done.

We just have to take a deep breath and convince ourselves that this really is the beginning of the end. Because it is...

well said
CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/01/2021 22:28

Greenland I am vaguely aware, a cousin is one of those involved in monitoring, challenging the restrictions.

And no, he isn't a government schill, he's one of the independent watchers... or rather his employer is!

glad im not alone , i thought it was only my cynical untrusting heart that felt this way

pinkpetal2 · 04/01/2021 22:30

Sorry to post such a silly question but the people who say this is life forever does anyone actually believe this? I mean when the groups are vaccinated will that be enough to move on with our lives in a way or will we always be put on lockdowns in the future what whatever reasons?

BungleandGeorge · 04/01/2021 22:32

There are more staff available. Processes become quicker as people become familiar and pracitisednin what they’re doing. The AZ vaccine wasn’t packed and ready so there aren’t the numbers at the moment. There is extra capacity, obviously hampered somewhat by the enormous amount of people needing treatment for covid currently. It would help enormously if people cut down on all unnecessary trips out temporarily, town centres are still really busy here to say most shops are shut.
herecomesthsun · 04/01/2021 22:32

@Flaxmeadow

Really no. This government have been terrible and we need to be able to hold them to account.

Just like every country in the world. We have been dealt these cards, whoever was/is/could have been in charge. We have a Tory Gov't, that is not going to change anytime soon. Every major decision this Govt have made has been backed by the opposition. Every rule, every lockdown, across the world, has been more or less the same, in our desperate attempts to save health services.

This is a crisis. No Govt asked for this. No Govt, left or right, wanted this. Hold them to account, but see the bigger picture. See that policy is universal. It's a bastard little virus and it won't let go. That's our enemy, not each other

no they aren't all the same

our death rates are terrible

and our government is the reason why

Flaxmeadow · 04/01/2021 22:32

Sobeyondthehills

No. We will move forward, we will do the right thing, we will draw on collective reserves just like we did last time, and keep it up. Stick by the rules and we will win. Avanti!

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 22:35

Horseshit!
Just stop your crap, right now

It is not horseshit. This lockdown is a fucking disaster for me financially - I’m facing ruin. If it wasn’t for the DC then ending it all is an option I would be considering. As it is I have to carry on for them. I’ll go about the daily routine of looking after them, because they need me - but inside I just feel empty and numb.

Flaxmeadow · 04/01/2021 22:35

no they aren't all the same

Bollocks

We are better than this, Starmer knows it, Govt knows it, We will trust in science and keep it up. This is what we will do. Together

BungleandGeorge · 04/01/2021 22:39

Can anyone who thinks the government have done a great job explain why they allowed needless mixing in primary schools today which will have undoubtedly increased infection rates when schools are closing tomorrow? People could have potentially safely used grandparents as childcare but now they’ve increased the risk of passing covid to them. Because I can’t personally come up with a single rational explanation?

Nonsense, some governments are doing much better than us.

For example, sending everyone in to mix in school today, instead of planning a school closure in a sensible and safe fashion that gave teachers time to prepare for online learning.

There will be many deaths from today,

We need to use science to tackle this crisis and this bunch aren't up to it.

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 22:41

@Flaxmeadow

And tell me how you would move on from losing your house, the council coming after you for non payment of council tax, you don't have internet because you can't afford it, so your kids can't get homeschooled. You are having to make sure you have gas and electric and food.

Those people who just about got through the first time round, might not have gotten through the second lockdown and might not get this lockdown.

Also got to keep in mind, that all during the last 10 months disability assessments have been going on as well, so some families might now be coping with the lost of one person's job and their disability benefits. Or the megre amount one person was getting as a carer's allowance.

Don't put us all in the same boat, because we are all not. Some people used up their reserves just to get through Christmas, you know when some of us were told, we couldn't see our families, after yet another u turn from this government

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 22:41

I agree @BungleandGeorge, it’s unbelievable. How was this allowed to happen?!

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 22:42

@peasoup8 please see if you can get a phone appointment with a doctor, I am not sure how easy it is going to be for you, but it might help to talk to someone professional

FlissMumsnet · 04/01/2021 22:42

Hi All,

We are really sorry to hear how the latest announcement is making everyone feel so desolate.

We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources.
You can also go to the Samaritans website, or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.

In the meantime here's some Brew and Flowers

We will support each other. Please message me, anyone, because we will get through this, together. There is hope, we have science, we live in the 21st century, and, thanks to social media, we do not need to be apart or struggle alone. We have so many, modern world, things on our side

I know I sound like a broken record but something I think is overlooked, apart from vaccine, is testing. Quick cheap efficient instant testing. It will be here soon.

Thank you science. All those working behind the scenes. Don't forget
