I’m just so fed up. It feels like Groundhog Day now. Worried about business, worried about ds’s schooling. Doing dry January too - thinking about scraping that tbh. How’s everyone else doing?

And tell me how you would move on from losing your house, the council coming after you for non payment of council tax, you don't have internet because you can't afford it, so your kids can't get homeschooled. You are having to make sure you have gas and electric and food.

Those people who just about got through the first time round, might not have gotten through the second lockdown and might not get this lockdown.

Thank you!!! Why do so many people on Mumsnet not get this? I can only surmise it’s because they’re coming from a very privileged position and these sorts of worries are completely alien to them.

tootsytoo · 04/01/2021 22:45

@peasoup8 exactly, but they're not the selfish ones they are the ones that want to save lives - at all costs remember! But fuck the under privileged because we must just make sure everyone (even though many won't need it) gets access to hospital treatment! At all costs.

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 22:46

@Flaxmeadow we live in the 21st century

You know what this country also has? A massive fucking boom in food banks.

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 22:48

We will support each other. Please message me, anyone, because we will get through this, together.

I wish I could believe you @Flaxmeadow but I’ve completely lost the faith. My beloved home is going on the market next week - we decided this evening after lockdown was announced. It’s no doubt a shit time to sell but we have no choice, this third lockdown is the final nail in the coffin for us financially. I’m broken.

BiBabbles · 04/01/2021 22:48

Didn't Boris just hint GCSE exams will be cancelled ?

He said "We recognize that it is not possible for all exams to go ahead as normal. The Education Secretary will work with Ofqual to put in place alternative arrangements."

That's all that was said about exams - even though are BTEC exams going on this week as planned as far as anyone knows (there is some push to stop them, so who knows).

There was, I think, an emphasis on the "all". Some are likely to be canceled, it still seems like they're going to try to have some of the summer exams (which is really awkward as the cut off for signing up and paying for those exams is coming up before the end of the month for many of them. I doubt they'll have announced a plan on which if any by then).

Flaxmeadow · 04/01/2021 22:50

I live in a council house. I own fuck all, don't have a pot to piss in. I lost my job, I'm on UC and zero hours contract. I'm freezing cold, most of the time now. But I ain't giving in and no, no matter what, I know the council will NOT evict me. I've got a roof over my head, food. I live in western world. I'm lucky

Destinysdaughter · 04/01/2021 22:53

Hugs to everyone struggling right now, this is genuinely bloody hard for everyone. On the subject of Dry January, this sums it up for me right now...

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 22:54

And we are most definitely NOT all in this together either.

The council might not evict you but do you not think a bank would?

I think your optimism is amazing, but a lot of people have not got it now, especially after that announcement and telling people we will get through this is not going to help

Nor to the other poster who said we shouldn't be talking about suicide, its not a great thing to talk about, but it is a fact that with mental health illnesses, when you are that far into the pit that suicide looks like an option. We need to have conversations about that, so that it stops being so taboo and hopefully gets people taking about it and gets people talking about their feelings, especially men.

peasoup8 · 04/01/2021 23:01

@Sobeyondthehills thanks but my GP is completely dismissive, abrupt and unapproachable at the best of times. It’s really not worth the bother.

JaceLancs · 04/01/2021 23:01

Agreed those who the council or housing association will not evict are the lucky ones
Many in private rented do not have that luxury
Many home owners will have to sell or be re-possessed
Suicide for many actually feels like a choice or even positive option
If you’ve not been that close to the edge - don’t judge

Flaxmeadow · 04/01/2021 23:03

The council might not evict you but do you not think a bank would?

No they would not. What economic system would want the sight of mass foreclosure.

We are all on hold.

Nat6999 · 04/01/2021 23:03

Everybody saying this isn't the Tory's fault, they knew this mutation was coming early December, they could have done something then, closed schools immediately instead of waiting for everything to get to crisis point again. They were glad of all this building up as a smokescreen for Brexit, they should have asked in the summer for an extension or even in late September when they knew that numbers were growing again but they didn't. Lives are being lost yet again because of them failing to get their arses in gear.

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 23:04

@peasoup8 could you try another doctor? If not I know depending on area you can sometimes self refer yourself. I can PM you the details once I find it

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 23:06

@Flaxmeadow

ahhh, so those banks are happy to just wait and see what happens, allowing people not to pay back their debt.

Are you living in the real world?

I'm so beyond devastated.
I can essentially kiss goodbye to my degree that I've been working so hard towards for the last 2 and half years (4 yr degree) as a lone parent. So many sacrifices and hardships to achieve and it's now looking like a big waste of time.
My wifi is shit at the best of times but ds needing to be online 9-3 is the death knoll.

I'm also so sad that ds is now stuck in a small flat once again. No outside space, no siblings and only me for company and pretty much a full year of education lost.

I've now had enough.

Flaxmeadow · 04/01/2021 23:10

Yes they will wait. There have no alternative do they.

Furries · 04/01/2021 23:10

@MrsMiaWallis

I hope the NHS claps our kids next Thursday.
If you’d said the govt should clap the kids, I could maybe have understood your sentiment.

But that’s pretty low to aim for the doctors and nurses working to save lives.

glas14368 · 04/01/2021 23:10

This is just so horrible. Home schooling just does not suit some kids.

My son had his GCSEs cancelled and had no schooling from March onwards last year. This culminated in him becoming depressed and attempting suicide.

He has just started A levels, but this has been a miserable experience. Working online does not suit him - yes, he's lazy and prefers to talk to friends, but the lessons he has are often very short and nothing like he would have in class. We are in Wales, so no exams scheduled. However if they are attributing grades to pupils on mock exams, surely these are now real exams with no chance to learn from their results and their revision techniques (or lack of).

I wish schools would offer pupils the chance to restart the year in September should they wish. This year has turned into a complete write-off educationally for lots of children.

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 04/01/2021 23:12

It’s my marriage I’m worried about.

Absolutely no issues before the first lockdown. We were close, best friends etc.

3 kids at home and him working full time has really taken its toll. We aren’t as close. I feel heartbroken. We haven’t had any time together really. We have barely had sex (4 times since first lock down!!).

I😔

Sobeyondthehills · 04/01/2021 23:16

Yes they will wait. There have no alternative do they.

Do you want to tell the posters that up thread who are telling you, they are having to sell their houses.

Its not just the roof over your head, its all the other things and unless the government change their tune on things like tax returns people are going to have to do that. So on the plus side for some people, they will lose their home, but they can go directly to jail for not paying their council tax, tv licence and tax bill

Hearwego · 04/01/2021 23:19

That bloody useless Gavin Williamson! Is that lily livered incompetent fool still in a job?
Boris doing what he does best. Insists everything is fine and schools are safe.
Then buckles under media pressure and at the 11th hour does a typical Boris u- turn.
Millions of people in dire straits now.

PeggyBundy · 04/01/2021 23:22

As a childminder I can still open to some children but will lose a lot of my income. And also the government seem to think we’re immune to the virus. Desperately want the vaccine as I’m diabetic.

Hearwego · 04/01/2021 23:23

Must be difficult especially for single parents with kids of multiple ages. Imagine 3-4 kids all school age and trying to home school. A lady I know has informed her school that she just can’t do it, so it to bother sending her school work as it’s not possible for her to do with three kids under 10.
No one wants Boris job but for heavens sake, this really is a shit show.
