Retired nurse willing to vaccinate... but..

So I've rejoined the temporary register and looked at joining nhsp so I can vaccinate.

They're expecting me to complete online training (all of which I've done before when employed) which I know is about 2 days worth before they will proceed with application.

About 90% is irrelevant.

Feeling very fed up.

I saw an article yesterday that a currently working dentist tried to volunteer and faced the same issues. Ridiculous. I tried to sign up for initial contact tracing, I gave up due to similar issues.

GirlsonFilm · 03/01/2021 15:49

If you're interested do think about contacting your local GP surgery. They tend to be much more pragmatic about training.

DangerousMouse · 03/01/2021 15:53

My GP husband had to do the training too, I saw a lot of what he had to complete - totally irrelevant... he completed it in an afternoon so if you know it you should be able to whizz through it

Layladylay234 · 03/01/2021 15:53

Hi, I'm a healthcare student who's just finished all the training. So a lot of it is stuff we do once a year in preparation for our placements. Did you know you can just go straight to the assessments if you feel confident in that field (aka safeguarding). That's what I did for moving and handling, infection control etc and it saved a lot of time. I think it also says somewhere that you don't have to complete most of the basic modules if you've administered vaccines in the past 12 months which might be relevant to you?

I get it's frustrating. I've had the time and motivation to do it as I'm on maternity leave so was thankful to get a bit of time to myself to complete the modules! But my partner saw all the modules and balked that it would put a lot of people off. For me, the time spent on the training is worth it as I want this bloody pandemic to be over asap and I'll do whatever it takes to speed things up.

However, I should warn you, once you have passed the modules, you then have to download the certificates to then upload them to the background checks. That took me about an hour today as there's about 18 certs to upload. Then I could only get about a quarter of the way through the background checks as they want character references and I have to get the ok from mine before I can put their details down. Annoyingly, they won't let you complete the OTHER background check questions past the character references until you've entered them. The way they've designed the application and screening process is terrible to say the least.

Anyway, good luck if you do persist xx

DangerousMouse · 03/01/2021 15:53

Ah this sounds more complex than what he had to complete... ignore me!

lovelemoncurd · 03/01/2021 15:55

@nopeaceforthewicked really? I'm a current registered nurse who also has to complete the training and I'm happy to help.

You have a choice you know? No one is making you!

Layladylay234 · 03/01/2021 15:55

Might be because I'm going via the non healthcare professional route. If you are/were, it might be a quicker process.

nopeaceforthewicked · 03/01/2021 15:58

I'm in such a quandary. I really didn't want to ever work again.. but doing nothing to help isn't easy when I could easily support this and it would make such a difference.

I despair.

Same here - I am on the emergency covid register. I only left my Nursing career about 18 months ago after 30 years of general Nursing. Applied for band 4 vaccinator jobs on NHS website early Dec and heard nothing from that application. Applied via NHS professionals and been sent a load of online training to do. Will ned my vulnerable DH to be vaccinated before I can do any kind of work helping with vaccination.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 03/01/2021 16:01

You can definitely whizz though mandatory training. Are their quizzes at the end of each module. Take photos of the content as you flick through it.

TooStressyTooMessy · 03/01/2021 16:03

It is ridiculous isn’t it. I despair of how this is organised (or not Sad).

foodtoorder · 03/01/2021 16:05

@nopeaceforthewicked it might be worth looking at your local ccg website for a more localised response.

nopeaceforthewicked · 03/01/2021 16:06

Very happy to do the necessary relevant bits... wouldn't consider not.

Moving and handling? Prevent? Fire? Etc Etc. All stuff I've done countless times before

And now all in my own time because I want to help...

They're really not going about this the right way to encourage the likes of me back.

If you know it just do it and go straight to the assessments. Either you’re willing to do it or you’re not. If your balking at this then you should just be honest and say you’re not willing.

user1477249785 · 03/01/2021 16:12

I think the PM was asked about this on Marr this morning and he acknowledged that it wasn't great and that they were looking to fix it to make it easier for people to volunteer.

nopeaceforthewicked · 03/01/2021 16:16

Well that's that then.

.... off for a G &T.....

I’m waiting for them to get more desperate and reduce all the shit rather than waste my time. Which lets face it, will happen!

Backbee · 03/01/2021 16:19

They are covering their arses, standard in any job, and they won't have your previous certs stashed away in case if you have left. Why not just do the assessments?

HildegardNightingale · 03/01/2021 16:20

Ha ha, good luck!!

Or right click and open in new tab?
sashagabadon · 03/01/2021 16:24

I get it’s a pain but really if you are experienced hcp, you’ll whizz through them. As a pp said you can go straight to the assessment on ones you are confident on. You normally need 80% and most are multiple choice. Bear in mind many require 2 or more answers.
It’s really not that hard for someone motivated and should take no more than a morning I would think. I heard a lady complaining n the radio about one of the courses in particular and thought to myself she could have done it 5 times over in the time she took to complain about it. It’s a 10 min online course , mostly about fire extinguishers and potential fire hazards!
I bet they’ll lose some of the less important courses but some will be a good refresher.

nopeaceforthewicked · 03/01/2021 16:24

Err

I'm retired. I did nearly 40 years in the nhs, working my arse off for all the shit you get, ticking all the silly boxes. Why? Because I loved being a nurse and helping.

I swore I'd never return but guess what, a pandemic comes along and I see a way I can easily help.

They want me to do more pointless box ticking, but this time for no pay at all... in my own time.

You might understand one day.

OP posts:
sashagabadon · 03/01/2021 16:31

To be fair lots of us are doing stuff to help in our own time without pay. I am on the Oxford vaccine trial which is actually pretty time consuming, I am also going to help with testing next week at my kids school and I have volunteered to be a vaccinator steward which I will do at the weekend and evenings in my own time and also without pay. I also work full time in a hospital too.
But up to you I guess. One benefit is that you might actually get vaccinated so that could be a good incentive?
