Retired nurse willing to vaccinate... but..

nopeaceforthewicked · 03/01/2021 15:44

So I've rejoined the temporary register and looked at joining nhsp so I can vaccinate.

They're expecting me to complete online training (all of which I've done before when employed) which I know is about 2 days worth before they will proceed with application.

About 90% is irrelevant.

Feeling very fed up.

the volunteers involved in the mass testing in schools don't even need a DBS check. Because obviously nothing can go wrong when shoving a cotton bud up a child's nose

I'm one of those volunteers... the kids will test themselves. There was an advert for a paid job at local secondary to support the test -- advert explicitly said this was for admin & support not administering tests. Are unpaid volunteers administering tests ... where?

LazyFace · 03/01/2021 22:02

@nopeaceforthewicked

Very happy to do the necessary relevant bits... wouldn't consider not.

Moving and handling? Prevent? Fire? Etc Etc. All stuff I've done countless times before

And now all in my own time because I want to help...

They're really not going about this the right way to encourage the likes of me back.

But you can just skip right to the tests, it's not an issue and surely quicker than filling in a lengthy application for an nhs post.
@sashagabadon - just out of interest is the steward role a voluntary one or paid?
Voluntary. I am going to offer my services at the weekend and/ or evenings

Me too re. School testing. I am dbs checked as it happens but I don’t expect to be administering the tests myself( although I am an expert having done weekly ones on myself since May Grin).
LazyFace · 03/01/2021 22:10

Also a while back there was an outrage on the internet (I can't remember where when the nhs was recruiting non-medically trained people to carry out the vaccinations).
It seems they can't do anything right.

The bbc article where a doctor complained about having to do Safeguarding Children training despite not vaccinating children.... I wonder why so many cases of child abuse get missed.... not so hard to understand you might spot something when a parent/carer has a child with them when they get their vaccine.....

sashagabadon · 03/01/2021 22:16

Yes so odd that people are objecting to the nhs carry out basic competency checks on people that will be vaccinating others. I think there would be more outrage if there wasn’t Confused

Notthissticky · 03/01/2021 22:48

@lljkk @sashagabadon Apologies, I may have been mistaken. I know teachers won't be administering the tests in schools, so I assumed it was the volunteers. I still think it's ridiculous you don't need a DBS to volunteer though. In my school, if you don't have a DBS you are supposed to be with a staff member at all times. Really not sure how one staff member is supposed to be accompanying (I assume) multiple volunteers, that kind of defies the objective of having volunteers...

It’s odd that I could go and work a shift in the local hospital tomorrow as a qualified HCP caring for patients, giving injections and a lot more besides without any extra checks or training but to do covid injections I need to do all this...obviously I’d expect the covid specific training.
lovelemoncurd · 04/01/2021 05:15

Op- you've spent more time complaining on here than it takes to complete the course. Just get on with it!

You seriously think so? 😂

Maybe when they bring their antiquated systems up to date enough for it to be done on Apple

I don’t understand the problem. It’s only a few hours of your time. If you don’t want to help, then don’t. But don’t blame the NHS for what is a very sensible process.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 04/01/2021 07:23

Yes it's annoying and pointless but in the time you spent moaning here you could have got a fair way through it. Your choice really.

No way do those modules take two days though. Half a day will do it, and you don't have to pay attention most of the time (yes, I have done them).

nopeaceforthewicked · 04/01/2021 07:29

Can I just point out that you can't do these modules, be they pointless, useful, take hours or seconds

Unless you own a laptop.

OP posts:
Edgeoftheledge · 04/01/2021 07:29

Seems to be really inflexible, asking for 8 hour shifts only, some people can’t commit to that but could say, do 4.

I can honestly say that that the vaccination service isn’t for you OP.
RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/01/2021 07:33

@DangerousMouse

My GP husband had to do the training too, I saw a lot of what he had to complete - totally irrelevant... he completed it in an afternoon so if you know it you should be able to whizz through it
From what I saw it's standard NHS mandatory training, surely your husband is either up to date with it already, or needs to do it regularly anyway?
CatVsChristmasTree · 04/01/2021 07:38

@GirlsonFilm

If you're interested do think about contacting your local GP surgery. They tend to be much more pragmatic about training.
Nope, GP surgeries have exactly the same requirements. Our GPS were moaning about having to do it in order for us to join the local vaccine hub, despite the fact that they are supposed to have been doing it all anyway! It is annoying, I had to do it when I started and some is expiring (some are annual and some are 3 years etc) and has to be redone. Usually you can skip to the assessments but some of it references dates and laws etc and you need to go through it all. Can easily take a day or two.

Apparently Boris Johnson's said he is trying to get it scrapped for the vaccine requirements, which makes sense for things like the radicalisation training as that's very unlikely to be an issue in a 5 minute vaccine appointment!

Even Matt Hancock appears to disagree with that Hmm

So you want to help out, but you want to pick and choose which training you feel is relevant?

@bowchicawowwow

Hmm

Very happy to help out.

Very much unwilling to buy a laptop to waste my time doing training I know I don't need, unpaid, in my own time.

Already had a belly full of nhs time and money wasters.

Very happy to volunteer to do something else helpful.

Norah8 · 04/01/2021 08:07

I'm an AHP so no vaccination training... I am about to start the online training today on my Annual leave.. Happy to do this in my own time unpaid.
We work in a caring profession after all.

Norah8 · 04/01/2021 08:08

Ps you can do it on your phone if you don't have a laptop.
And honestly I had a look I'm sure you can wizz through it if you've done it before.

jessycake · 04/01/2021 08:09

This government can't do anything properly , all I want to know is that someone is competent to administer a jab , all else is irrelevant in the 30 seconds it takes .

Buttercupcup · 04/01/2021 08:10

It’s about the bigger picture though isn’t it? The NHS runs in an archaic manner a lot of the time, there are reams of paperwork for everything and policies about writing policies. Some of it is required but lots of it could be stripped out to make things more efficient and ultimately more cost effective. People should be paid a fair wage to work and paid to train if you need to do it to get the job done safely. Culturally it has become accepted that people will do more for less if not free in the NHS and that then sets a precedent for everyone within the organisation. Obviously it is a global pandemic and this changes the landscape but the change should be streamlining and common sense. A nurse with 40+years experience should surely be able to sign something to state they feel adequately trained to patient face and deliver the vaccine under a PGD this covers everyone’s bum and means we can crack on.

Norah8 · 04/01/2021 08:10

Exactly. Agree with above. Let's get this done
